You are not alone and I concur on the replacing the chain will definitely cure your problem. Because, it's happened to my NP231 t/c + teralow 4:1 recent at the Jaw Breaker run on the last Jeep Jamboree where I had to withdraw from the event. One way to be absolutely sure is to disengage to front driveshaft and test it in 4wd (try to climb over an obstacle) and if you don't hear the "harsh metal-to-metal strip gear sound" then you know the drive chain in your t/c has stretched. Rather than buy the new chain at the dealer ($250+tax) or 4Wheeler Supply ($99+tax), I purchased one (brand new) at www.standardtransmission.com for $62+S/H and it took me only 3 hrs to replace the drive chain (not a very hard job). I did it in my garage and w/o removing the whole t/c out from the car. This is also a perfect time to consider installing a SYE upgrade if it is within your budget. Hope this help.

I get several suggestions on my last message about my heater problems so here's the latest.
Well, no heat ofcourse. I changed the thermostat, hoses and flushed the system about 8 months ago. The flow through the heater core was fine. I've reached back into the vent after being on the highway and the core was cold... The hoses going into the core under the hood are hot. I havn't changed the water pump since this has started. Oh, and there is no flow/valve in front of the firewall on the hoses. I'm still lost...

Hello,

Stu O and I replaced my 5-297X ujoints with the new Spicer 5-760X ujoints.
They went right in no problem. Fit just like the 297X's did though I can't
see why they'd be any stronger unless they are made of a slightly different
material. As a matter of fact the 297X's seem to have more material though
thats not necessarily any indication of strength.

I tack welded the caps to keep them from coming out in case I lose a clip.
After seeing what can happen when a cap walks out after losing a clip I
think its cheap insurance. For those that do not know what I mean I'll
explain. I've seen pics of a few different Jeeps that lost a clip and had
the cap walk out. The worst part was when the cap walks out while moving it
sometimes breaks the ball joint which cause the knuckles to fall off. This
can really suck on the trail. Tacking the cap to the yoke will help keep it
in if the clip ever falls off. Of course it's always wise to inspect your
rig after every run for these kind of things.

Subject: BLM Scoping Meetings..... AGAIN

PLEASE NOTE YOUR CALENDARS!!!

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2002; 6-9 P.M.

Public scoping meetings will be held during January through March, 2002, for
the BLM Conservation and Restoration of Vegetation and Habitat Treatments
Programmatic EIS. The locations, dates, and times for the meetings are as
follows:

Arizona - January 16, 6-9 PM, Holiday Inn Crown Plaza, 2532 West Peoria
Ave., Phoenix, AZ. (Northeast corner of I-17 & Peoria Rd)

This isn't a "trails" scoping meeting in specifics but the "outcome" could
definitely be a detriment to OHV.

They are studying the "treatments" used to control noxious weeds or unwanted
vegetation. Probably the major issue at this time is SHOWING we are
concerned and want to understand how and what our agencies are doing.

Please wear your red shirts to simply make yourselves be known. We CAN and
WILL be a positive ally with the agencies..... YOU need to join us in this
partnership.

See you all there!

PLEASE SEND THIS ON TO YOUR PERSON LISTS............... WE NEED TO SHOW
NUMBERS AGAIN. THANKS.

Subject: RE: 5-760X ujoints

If you haven't seen a ball joint failure due to a u-joint blowing out, here
is a pic of one.

http://www.stu-offroad.com/others/rawdeal/rd-40.jpg

This one did not come from losing a u-joint clip, but the end result was the
same. :( We were able to make a trail repair to the ball joint (don't ask
me, I was in charge of towing at that time) and get it back to a point along
the trail where we could trailer it out.

Hi all,
I had to buy a evap canister from Darner yesterday. He asked if I was quoted a price, I said no, but I was a member of the AZVJC and we supposedly had a discount. Sure enough, I got my 25% off.
Thanks Doug for setting this up for us.

Hey guys, I just thought I would see if any of you would be
interested in custom made pipe benders(wouldn't it be great to have
your own bender). I will say this..These benders will hardly take
space in your garage and their on wheels for easy moving.
I will post another email later today when I take pictures of a
bender and get all the important info on them.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!

Subject: '89 YJ shifter problems

Last night I turned a corner in my manual transmission
89 YJ and something terrible happened. As I shifted
into 2nd gear, the stick all of a sudden had way too
much play for 2nd gear--I could move it about a foot
in all directions. Now it is stuck in 2nd gear, in my
driveway.
Has this happened to anyone before?

TIA
Dan

Yep! This just happened last week in my '72 Ford. I will be taking the shift
tower off to replace a pin that connects the stick to the shift forks, at
least, that's what I think I will be doing. Don't worry, it isn't the
transmission, just the shifter.

Morning Stu

I was looking at your web site this morning and also OziExplorer's site. What I am not sure of is, does OziExplorer come with maps or do you need to purchase them separately?

TIA

Oziexplorer uses the USGS DRG (digital raster graphic) maps. These
are tiff images of the USGS topo maps, and they have a built in
calibration.

You have a couple options on obtaining the maps.

You can either purchase CDs with the map files already on them. Or,
some places will make you CDs with the map files that you specify.
One place that I know that will make custom CDs is
http://www.gisdatadepot.com

OR, you can spend some time downloading the maps from the above
mentioned site. gisdatadepot has maps for all of the United States.

However, I'm sure you're probably mainly concerned with Arizona
maps...

In that case, your best bet is to point your favorite browser to
http://aria.arizona.edu. You can download all the Arizona maps you
need there. Although, doing it through the web is pretty slow. I've
figured out how to obtain everything through FTP. You can either
search the archives (search for "aria" or something like that), or e-
mail me if you're interested, and I'll tell you how to do it. Even if
you have a high speed internet connection, it'll still probably take
you a couple days to get everything (I wouldn't want to know how long
it'd take to download everything with a 56k connection!).

Or, if you really don't feel like doing all that, contact me and
maybe we can work out a deal where I can make copies of all the maps
I have on CD (I have all the Arizona maps). I'll be on break for the
holidays after next week and won't have much else to do... (Yes, this
is legal as we've all have already paid for the maps through tax
dollars).

Subject: TJ Torque spec needed

I need the torque spec for a TJ front lower control axle side bolt.

FYI - When I replaced the bushings on my 2.5 year old Tera arms it seemed
that the bushings on the frame side of the front LCA's were wore more than
the others. I am not sure why but, I am thinking that the frame side bracket
is stiffer and thus the bushing takes more abuse.

TIA
