I've never heard of a rebuild kit although that doesn't mean they don't
exist. But I have heard of people replacing the chain. And, of course,
I've heard of SYE kits that replace the main shaft, 4:1 kits that replace
the front half of the case as well as the reduction gears, and 2lo kits
that replace the range selector parts (don't remember what they're called).
I've done all of these.

I don't know what your motivation is or what such a kit would cost, but
it might be worth doing one or more of the above upgrades and getting
some improved capability at the same time.

Check with AMC 4x4 Salvage. They're at 6741 E Belmont in Glendale. I picked
up a "rebuild" kit from them. It included all seals and bearings. It was
just under $100 I believe.

My motivation is merely to fix the horrible rattle, which was diagnosed by
AAMCO as my transfer case chain. Sounds like slapping the chain across cast
aluminum......though JW thinks it is the trans. I myself admit to ignorance
(different from stupidity) and when I took it to them for an estimate, got
it back re-sealed with the advice I fix the chain, as it does stretch after
much hard-core use. any reasonable comments?

honestly don't remember telling anyone that I thought they had transmission
problems recently.

What kind of Jeep do you have? Year, make and model?

You are not alone and I concur on the replacing the chain will definitely cure your problem. Because, it's happened to my NP231 t/c + teralow 4:1 recent at the Jaw Breaker run on the last Jeep Jamboree where I had to withdraw from the event. One way to be absolutely sure is to disengage to front driveshaft and test it in 4wd (try to climb over an obstacle) and if you don't hear the "harsh metal-to-metal strip gear sound" then you know the drive chain in your t/c has stretched. Rather than buy the new chain at the dealer ($250+tax) or 4Wheeler Supply ($99+tax), I purchased one (brand new) at www.standardtransmission.com for $62+S/H and it took me only 3 hrs to replace the drive chain (not a very hard job). I did it in my garage and w/o removing the whole t/c out from the car. This is also a perfect time to consider installing a SYE upgrade if it is within your budget. Hope this help.

It would be better to flip it on the roof and pull it out. Of course
the sand will slow it down when it starts digging in. The second cove is
a long way from Butcher Jones if you are hauling dead weight. This SUV
probably weighs around 4000# since it is a framed vehicle. I think it
will make an interesting day at the Coves.

Hello All,

Matt Twinam aka Machew is leading a FR-42 trail run on Saturday, December 15, 2001.

When: 9am
Where: Bartlet pay station
Rating: 3.0+
Length: ?
CB Channel:

THIS TRIP HAD AN EST. 35 JEEPS AND OTHER WHEELERS, SOME OF THE JEEPS WERE LOCKED AND SOME WERE OPEN. THE OPEN WHEELERS AS ALWAYS WERE A BALL TO WATCH THEM TRY TO CLIMB THE SANDY POTHOLED HILLS ALL OVER THE TRAIL. MY FRIEND DON WALKER BROUGHT HIS UNLOCKED 1987 CARBERATED ''YJ'' OUT ON THIS TRAIL, AS ALWAYS HE UPHELD HIS NICKNAME ''AIRTIME'' BY GIVING US ALL A [GAS IT AND GO] SHOW UP EVERY HILL, HE EVEN ENDED UP DRIVING OTHER UNLOCKED JEEPS FOR MEMBERS THAT COULDN'T GET THIER OWN JEEPS THROUGH. THIS TRAIL IS GOOD 4X4 PRACTICE THAT IS CLOSE TO HOME AND HAS CHALLENGES ALL THE WAY THROUGH, INCLUDING SOME ROCKCRAWLING, IF DESIRED.

I have to give thanks to Rick Beer at Discount,
I popped one of my sidewalls on Raw Deal on wednesday, and since I
had purchased these tires second hand I did not have the Road hazard
paperwork, (the guy I bought them from said he would send it to me
but he never did and never answers his phone,) so I was up $hit Creek
with no paddle. Or So I thought. I called Rick and he said he had a
used 50% tire I could use, So I drive down there(about 40 min. drive)
only to find out the tire is for a 16.5" rim not my 15", So Rick
Decided to give a brand new tire and only charged the road hazard and
mounting fee! Definitely worth the drive to me and whenever I need
tires I will be sure to get them from him.

Thanks Rick,

So far it looks like Saturday. Sorry. Right now we have 2 FS Jeep
trucks, 2 Dodge trucks (one gas, one diesel), a FS Blazer, and a few
winches mounted on Jeeps.

I am replacing my UCA's and the bushings and seals in my LCA's. Do I leave
all the bolts holding them, the control arms, in place loose and then
tighten when the wheels hit the ground? It has been a while since I did the

I may be bringing a FS Cherokee and an F150 with me...so we should have
plenty of muscle.
