The terrain is actually pretty torn up, especially the first few hill
climbs before you drop in to the river wash. Six or seven years ago
I was able to drive my 88 mustang GT to the first cove, now you can
barely get a 2wd truck back there. The terrain has taken a beating
just in the last few years with dozens of new trails ripping up the
mountain sides. I'm sure that it wont be long before the forest
services locks the gate.

Driving in FWD is a temporary solution at best. I've done it with my TJ and had no trouble though it didn't feel as stable as using the rear driveline. I did it to get my TJ back to the garage where I could replace the bad ujoints in the driveshaft. I can't imagine driving it for any prolonged distance. With an option diff in the front you'll probably be ok but if it has an autolocker up front oh boy, be ready for some serious torque steer.

I'd take it slow. How far are you driving it? A trip to Arizona in FWD probably wouldn't be a good idea ;)

I grew up in montana. I know safe traveling speeds in snow/ice in 2wd. I am aware of these concerns. What I don't know is how fast a cj-5 will travel in 4 wheel drive (will actually only be 2 becuase rear driveline/shaft is missing) I understand there's a lot of variables. These aside average speed...

Also, pertaining to exhaust problems...there are no mufflers. pipes end at flange just behind front tires.

Again thanks in advance for input.

It will just be a front wheel drive vehicle as long as the transfer case is in good shape. If the roads are icy, you might have some problems in 2WD.

I have '68 cj-5 in montana that does not have a rear driveline, or exhaust system. I know in a perfect world I'd put both on before driving down here. My question is how badly is the gas mileage going to be effected by driving in "front wheel drive."
Also how bad of an idea is this? I'm going to have a shop do some work on the front end or I'd be able to replace driveline and put on exhaust. I don't think this is a standard rear driveline either, it has a 3rd shifter, I was told was a underdrive.
Any and all input would be appreciated.

Thanks

I one drove my Jeep back about 40 miles (at about 35mph) from "the
trail" in "Front Wheel Drive" (4WD Hi-Range, Rear driveshaft removed).

As far as the gearing is concerned, it is the same as if you were in
2wd Hi-Range. Highway speeds are possible (as long as they were
possible before).

As far as SAFETY is concerned, while the vehicle may be physically
able to go 55-60mph, it isn't very safe. Most Front Wheel Drive cars
have the engine and tranny weight in front of or on top of the front
axle; that means the majority of the weight of the vehicle is on the
front. With a Jeep, the engine/tranny are clearly behind the front
axle -- even more so than most SUV's. Going up hill under slick
conditions, whether it be snow, ice or just wet could be a real
hazard. IMO, 40 - 45 would be the fastest I'd drive it under DRY
conditions.

my $.02

I've broke my rear drive shaft several times (long
story). With the rear shaft removed, you can drive at
any speed you want. The steering is a little funny.

Bottom line - I wouldn't drive in front wheel drive
very far at all.

The steering being "a little funny" is why I wouldn't go over 45 in dry

I'm not aware of anyone selling 4WD DVD's. Big Rock Video sells VHS
tapes and I think their video quality is the best I've seen (as far
as 4WD videos are concerned). Big Rock has a series on "Wheeling the
West" as well as tapes of the ARCA events including the one event that
was here in Arizona. I've not seen any of the "Wheeling the West"
videos but I have seen a few of the ARCA videos and I think they are
pretty good.

Its a mid to late 80's maybe early 90's nissan pathfinder. wheels might work
but it doesnt have any rims either. this may be a good idea I dont know.
However im in favor of hoisting it up on a larger 4X4 if possible could be
fun to figure out how...

What if you hoist it up between two jeeps? make it like an 8 wheel vehicle
and just drive it out of there.
(not sure if possible, but sounds fun to me)

Is there a rebuild kit for an NP231 transfer case? I'd like a do-it-all one
purchase kit if possible.....

And from the article I quote:

"It should be noted that wheel spacers will not pass inspection in
many states and that the manufacturer states on the disclaimer that
the wheel spacers are intended for off-road use only!"

Please, if you do use these wheel spacers on your daily driver, let
me know so that I can keep an eye out for you on the freeway and keep
my family as far away as possible.
