Ok, so still no heat.
I put in a new thermostat about 8 months ago. I flushed and redid the whole cooling system at that time, the flow through the heater core was fine. I have checked all wiring and slider controls. There is no flow shutoff valve or anything in the hoses going to the core.
After I got off the highway tonight I reached back into the vent to feel the core and it was cold!
Ok....So now what?!

Hi Gang,
I finally got my hands on some second hand tires, but I'm having trouble
with tire pressure..... the guy in the local tire shop tells me that all
tires should be inflated to 35psi when cold. Last time I ever go there.....

The tires are Mickey Thompson baja claws (the bias belted, not the radials)
in the 31x11.5 r15 flavor, 8" rims. The jeep is a Ssangyong Korando,
similar to a CJ-7 in both appearance and weight. Trail pressures are no
problem, but where do I start with road pressures? At 35 the tire is
bulging ridiculously in the center, would 30psi when cold still be too
much? Just a ballpark figure to get me going.....

Thanks again,

The RE brackets are very strong, and they allow you some ability to rotate
the brackets up a bit. I have a set but I haven't put them on yet since my
stock ones are still hanging in there (hard to imagine how, thought ...I
bang them a lot). No real comments here on the Tera, since I have no
experience.

If your concerned about the cans hitting the lower spring pad, one option is
to trim the lower pad to clear the cans...which is what I did.

I have the Tera rear shock mount relocators. They work just fine. I've
had them for, mmmmm, maybe a year. They've been wacked good and no
problems at all. Be aware that they lengthen the shock close to 1 inch
though. In other words, they move the shock up about 1", so you'll have
to check to make sure that you aren't overcompressing the shocks, after
you install the relocators. On the flip side of that, they allow about
1" more droop ;)

Cheers,
Fred

Bob,

Quite a few of us on this list have installed the Rubicon Express weld on
mounts and I would definitely recommend them over the shock relocators.
Cutting off the old shock mounts is pretty easy and welding the new ones on
is straightforward. If you are not a welder, take it to Hunter Offroad (I'm
sure John could slip you in) or your favorite fab shop. As Doug mentioned,
you can clock the mounts so that you don't get any shock interference with
the coil spring mount (which also increases your ground clearance) AND you
can move the mounts outboard a bit so that you are less likely to hit them.
I have some pictures somewhere; I'll try to find and post them.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Put a chalk line across each tire, drive a few hundred feet (100
meters) in a straight line on a level asphalt surface, stop, look
at the chalk lines. You want the lines to wear off evenly across
the full width of the tread. Adjust air pressure accordingly.
Repeat the test.
Hope this helps,

Shaun,

Here's a simple way to get your pressure adjusted PERFECTLY for your vehicle
and tires:

Get some chalk.
Find someplace with asphalt to drive a short distance on.
Adjust your tire pressure to 32 PSI.
Draw a nice THICK chalk line across the FULL width of EACH tire.
Drive a short distance (100 yards) (go straight and don't turn any corners).
Look at the chalk lines on all tires:

If the chalk line is worn in the center of the tire but not the edges,
decrease tire pressure 1PSI and repeat test.

If the chalk line is worn at the outer edges of the tire, but not in the
center, increase tire pressure 1PSI and repeat test.

If the chalk line is worn evenly, then the tire pressure you have is
perfect... don't adjust it.

Proper tire pressures are different for different tires AND different
vehicles (and offroad tires seem to vary more and be more sensitive to
incorrect pressures). This is about the only way I know to accurately find
the proper tire pressure.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

PS. I run my tires at 28PSI and most people I know are within 1 or 2 PSI of
this pressure.

I have both currently on my TJ. Here are the writeups on my site:

Tera shock relocators:
http://members.home.net/rv6a/ShockRelocators.html

RE shock mounts:
http://members.home.net/rv6a/ShockMount.html

Why do I have them both? Because I've only broken one rear shock mount and
have been too lazy to cut the other one off and weld the RE mount on.

I like them both. The Tera shock reloacators do as they are supposed to,
although the RE mounts are much stronger since they do not use the thinner,
weaker factory mounts. An, as had been said by others, you can clock the RE
ones to get more clearance.

Will have a full report in a few years if the grant comes
through. Until then you will have to muddle through on your own.

I went with the Tera mounts. At the time, I didn't realize there was
a weld on relocator mount, otherwise, I probably would have gone with
that.

But, the Tera mounts are holding up fine for me. I haven't had any
problems with them. I suppose if they ever fail, I'll go with REs.

Keep in mind, the Tera mounts you can install yourself in about 15
minutes (If I remember correctly, there's only one or two bolts
holding each mount on). The RE mounts will require a bit more work,
especially if you're not a welder.

I have '68 cj-5 in montana that does not have a rear driveline, or exhaust system. I know in a perfect world I'd put both on before driving down here. My question is how badly is the gas mileage going to be effected by driving in "front wheel drive."
Also how bad of an idea is this? I'm going to have a shop do some work on the front end or I'd be able to replace driveline and put on exhaust. I don't think this is a standard rear driveline either, it has a 3rd shifter, I was told was a underdrive.
Any and all input would be appreciated.

the terrain is too terrible. Also, I've drug a burned out car before and
even traveling very very slow they are very very loud.

the terrain itself is not to bad. However the problem would come with the
hills. I dont know exactly how steep or whatever they are or if there are
other ones but a trailer I suppose is possible however would probably be a
little tricky. If you have ever been to the coves before the truck is
located in cove #2. I guess this is one of those times I wish I had acess to
a M-175 (i think) military transport trucks. You know the big ones with all
that space in the back to place a burned out truck.

It will just be a front wheel drive vehicle as long as the transfer case is in good shape. If the roads are icy, you might have some problems in 2WD.

Thanks

What type of SUV is it? may be able to get some crappy spare tires
to put on it to drag it out.

I grew up in montana. I know safe traveling speeds in snow/ice in 2wd. I am aware of these concerns. What I don't know is how fast a cj-5 will travel in 4 wheel drive (will actually only be 2 becuase rear driveline/shaft is missing) I understand there's a lot of variables. These aside average speed...

Also, pertaining to exhaust problems...there are no mufflers. pipes end at flange just behind front tires.

Again thanks in advance for input.

If you had enough people, some big hammers, a hacksaw and maybe an oxy/acet
rig you could probably just give everyone a little doggy bag to take
home. OTOH the terrain can't be *that* tough if a SUV can get through......

I was part of a clean up back in aus and we used to carry burnt out cars of
the mountains *by hand*. Took a few months worth of weekends (climbing
expeditions) to get a single car out. Sure felt good to see the end
results though........

You can also cut off the lower spring perches and clock them forward as I
did. This not only allows shock clearance but has the benefit of not having
as much of a curve on the coils which should provide a higher spring rate
and longer spring life. I also used the RE shock mounts though I had to
modify them to fit with my boxed lower control arm brackets.

Joe West

I drove from the north rim of the Grand Canyon in my TJ in front
only. It was a little scary. Torque steer is nuts, it feels
really "loose" and gas milage was crap. I'd recommend getting the
rear fixed or towing it down. As far as icy conditions, things will
change dramatically when you're pulling the vehicle and lose traction
as opposed to pushing. Pretty unsage if you ask me, but I've done
crazier things (will not go into detail, just know that no one was
hurt from any unsafe decisions made in the past).
