John,

Glad to hear you're OK. I have to admit, I go wheeling alone all the time.
I love to explore the old mines south of the Gila River in the area of
Grayback. My timing is such that trips just come up quickly and happen, or
don't happen at all. I carry "stuff" and try to keep my CJ in good shape,
but you just never know. Thanks for the heads up and reminder.

While we're on the subject, one of the things I always wonder about is what
tools to carry. In my experience fixing things anywhere but my garage I
never seem to anticpate and take the right tools. When packing tools for an
unknown problem it seems to me that unless you pull a trailer the chances of
having the tools you need are pretty slim. I carry 2 each standard and
phillips screwdrivers, 10" and 12" crescent, 7/16 through 3/4 box end
wrenches, small ball peen hammer, and small pry bar. I can think of alot of
problems that these tools wouldn't take care of. Any tips out there on
fundamental tools to carry as routine?

Once again, glad you and your finger made it.

Directions for getting to the GPS class.

From Shea Blvd:

1. in Fountain Hills, turn on Saguaro Blvd (can only go 1 direction)

2. Continue to El Lago Blvd (about 2 miles), go left.

3. At La Montana (1/4 mile), go right

4. The entrance to the community center is on La Montana shortly after the turn from El Lago.

5. There are 2 multi-colored buildings in this complex. One is the Library, the other is the community center. As you enter the parking lot from La Montana, the Community Center is the left-most building.

The GPS seminar will be posted in the lobby but we are supposed to be in Classroom I.

One of the things I am thinkin about getting is that "Gator Socket". That
one size fits all. That could be a pretty handy tool on the trail. I had a
customer come in about a month ago and said he had picked one up and it
worked pretty well. May not be the best for everyday use, but would be
perfect for trail use. Where you could have metric or standard. Thinking I
should tell Santa about that one.....

Ok, I am telling this so people will see the importance of being
prepared.
Hopefully, by reading it, it will make your next trip a bit safer. And
maybe
get a get a lugh out of it. I think in a week or two I might begin to
laugh
myself.

Last night, my girlfreind and I went up to Fourpeaks to go see some
snow.
Innocent trip. What could happen? It is a graded road all the way up,
be
there and back in 5 hours... No problem. What could go wrong? Thats
what I
was thinking... so with that in mind, so I loaded up all my rescue
stuff, my
shovels, Max-Ax, straps, and Hi-Lift, out of my rock buggy, "Big Ugly",
into
my Land Cruiser and took off for the mountains. (Mind you, this is the
first
time I have had my Land Cruiser offroad in over 2 years, but that is a
longer
story)
So, I am on my way to the top, making good time, haveing a great time
with
girlfreind. Ok, then comes the mouse. This furball darted out in front
of
me and did that "headlight stop" right in front of me, I hit the brakes
and
stopped. I think he is gone and keep going, about 100 yards down the
road,
my girlfreind is worried, "What if you hit him and his just hurt, I dont
want
him to suffer". So, Like a good guy I go back to look. (I have a heart
for
small fuzzy things too). We get to the spot where the mouse and we
look. I
turn the Crusier around on the trail and back off a small concrete
bridge.
My passenger rear tire is up on a small bank, my driver rear tire is
sitting
below the lip of the concrete by about 1 foot. I am sitting on my leaf
spring.

Just a trip to the snow, what go worng. Because of a mouse, I
happend to
back off the only 8 foot span of concrete on a 18 friggin mile long
trail.

Ya, I was not happy........

But I had my "stuff", thank good. Out came the Ax, on goes the
shovel
attachment, and out comes the Hi-lift. I start digging and lifting. I
have
been stuck worse. Well, this is were things go from bad, to really,
really
bad. In the process of digging out, another TJ came along, he didnt
have
anything, not even a strap. But he was willing to help. Mostly they
talked
to my girl freind as I dug and swore underneath my Cruiser. I was
getting
close to getting out. I all had to do was place one more rock under the
tire
and I was going to have the guy strap me out. (It was my strap, he
didnt
have one) I have always hated working underneath a 4x4 when it is
jacked up
by a Hi-lift. I have this fear of slipping and dropping on me. I was
being
as careful as possible. Everybody was clear, in case the jack shot out,
I
was doing good. I was slowly postiong the rock under the tire, trying
to my
hands clear........

Then it happend...

The Jack slipped and the Land Cruiser came down on the rock. I
thought I
was ok (that thought lasted about .2 nanoseconds) unitl I realised,
that my
right index finger was pinned between a big rock and 33" General mud
tire
attached to 5300 pound 4x4.. I kept my cool and told the guy to start
helping me dig. (I would have had him use the Jack, but he didnt know
how to
use one. This was not the time to give someone a lesson.) The ground
was
soft and digging was the quickest and simplest way to go. Soon, the
rock
started dropping and the rear of the Cruiser sat on the bridge and I was
able
to get my finger out. All in all, everyone figures I was under there
for
about 30 to 45 seconds. My finger, was crushed. Nothing was broken but
it
was literally squeeshed flat. I had on have leather gloves which is the
only
thing that saved the sand and mud from removeing the skin from the bone.
Imagine 20 grit sand paper with a 1000 Lbs of presure. My girl freind
whipped out the first aid kit and I popped a bunch of Ibuprofren ( I
have
no idea how to spell that ). It took about 5 to 10 minutes for my
finger to
start to fill back out. Literally, it looked like something out of a
cartoon. With in 30 minutes I could move my finger without much
restriction, and tonight I can sit here and type this with no problems.
I
was way lucky. I used up a lot of prayer time on that one. We packed
up and
we headed up to play in the snow.

This was supposed to be an easy easy trail, but, somehow I managed to
end
up with the back of Cruiser of a concrete bridge and my finger pinned
under
the tire. Ya, Murphy was there, I could smell him. The point of this
is to
show, you never, NEVER know when it is going to hit the fan. I was
lucky. I
had my gear. I was able to take care of my self. But I almost left with
out
it. And God only knows how bad it could have been. Always take your
stuff.
And if you done have any, GET IT.

I know in the past, people have past around the list of what to carry
when
they go out. But I know alot of you dont for one reason or another.
Take
this story to heart.
These things saved my ***, and finger,

*Hi-lift, tow strap, First Aid Kit, Max-Ax Muiltipurpose tool (or shovel
and
stuff), Gloves, proper clothing. ( I was outside for almost an hour
over
this, and we where getting snowed on)

I hope this helps, Take the story for what you want, a good humor
story, or
a good lesson or both. By the way, the mouse, he was fine. He got
away.

Best Regards
John K

My wife just got a new TJ, and you wouldn't see her picture in the
dictionary next to the word TALL. What color are the steps and how much do
you want?

Or you can do what I did....trade the pulled Sahara parts for $$. I
couldn't see throwing the stuff away, that seemed rather silly. The only
"pulled item" left from mine are a pair of OEM steps. Anyone need a pair
cheap? ;)

If you are going to "roll your own", might as well order it with what you
want. ;)

David,

Definitly go with a Sport if you are going to build the Jeep up. Don't
waste your money on the Sahara like I did.
Scott Kruize is right; you end up throwing most of the Sahara crap out
anyway; why pay for it in the first place.

Get a sport in the color you want, and I'd recommend the following options:

Dual tops or soft top only, DO NOT get just a hardtop.
Dana 44 rear axle.
Air Conditioning.
Cruise Control (I know, I know... but I REALLY like it on longer drives).

Tire deflators make good gifts. The ones that air down to a preset
pressure and then stop automatically are about $40-$50 a set while
the manual ones (Quick Air Deflators) go for about $11 a set.

I think you could get him all the stuff to do flush mount rear lights
and then help him install them.

BTW - John I referred Mike Waterman to you last night. He just got a
RE long arm kit installed and needs someone to truss up his axle
brackets.

When at work I read all of the posts on the yahoo groups page. Today
for some reason all of the post have large advertisements inserted
into the body of the post. Why is this? And how do we get rid of
it...it is very annoying especially when they cover up part of the
senders message.

The 29th sounds good to me. We only have our Scrambler, and a winch, But hey
should be fun if nothing else.

Subject: [OT]"Twas" Afghanistan Christmas Carol

This was way to funny not to post...

Twas the night before Christmas and all
through the Land,
They're running like rabbits in Afghanistan,
Osama's been praying, he's down on his Knees,
He's hoping that Allah will hear all his Pleas.
He thought if he killed us that we'd fall and
Shatter,
But all that he's done is just make us Madder.
We ain't yet forgotten our Marines in Beirut,
And we'll kick your butt, with one heavy Boot.

And yes we remember the USS Cole,
And the lives of our sailors that you
*******s Stole.
You think you can rule us and cause us to Fear,
You'll soon get the answer if you live to Hear.
And we ain't forgotten your buddy Saddam,
And he ain't forgotten the sound of our Bombs.
You think that those mountains are somewhere to Hide.
They'll go down in history as the place where you Died.

Remember Khadhafi and his Line of Death?
He came very close, to his final Breath.
So come out and prove it, that you are a Man,
Cause our boys are coming and they have a Plan.
They are our fathers and they are our Sons,
And they sure do carry some mighty big Guns.
They would have stayed home with children and Wives,
Till you *******s came here and took all these Lives.

Osama I wrote this especially for You,
For air mail delivery by B-52.
You soon will be hearing a thud and a whistle,
Old Glory is coming, attached to a Missle.
I will not be sorry to see your *** Go.
It's Red, White, and Blue that is running this Show.
