Subject: Must Read 4x4ing Lesson/Story, And a mouse
Ok, I am telling this so people will see the importance of being prepared.
Hopefully, by reading it, it will make your next trip a bit safer. And maybe
get a get a lugh out of it. I think in a week or two I might begin to laugh
myself.
Last night, my girlfreind and I went up to Fourpeaks to go see some snow.
Innocent trip. What could happen? It is a graded road all the way up, be
there and back in 5 hours... No problem. What could go wrong? Thats what I
was thinking... so with that in mind, so I loaded up all my rescue stuff, my
shovels, Max-Ax, straps, and Hi-Lift, out of my rock buggy, "Big Ugly", into
my Land Cruiser and took off for the mountains. (Mind you, this is the first
time I have had my Land Cruiser offroad in over 2 years, but that is a longer
story)
So, I am on my way to the top, making good time, haveing a great time with
girlfreind. Ok, then comes the mouse. This furball darted out in front of
me and did that "headlight stop" right in front of me, I hit the brakes and
stopped. I think he is gone and keep going, about 100 yards down the road,
my girlfreind is worried, "What if you hit him and his just hurt, I dont want
him to suffer". So, Like a good guy I go back to look. (I have a heart for
small fuzzy things too). We get to the spot where the mouse and we look. I
turn the Crusier around on the trail and back off a small concrete bridge.
My passenger rear tire is up on a small bank, my driver rear tire is sitting
below the lip of the concrete by about 1 foot. I am sitting on my leaf
spring.
Just a trip to the snow, what go worng. Because of a mouse, I happend to
back off the only 8 foot span of concrete on a 18 friggin mile long trail.
Ya, I was not happy........
But I had my "stuff", thank good. Out came the Ax, on goes the shovel
attachment, and out comes the Hi-lift. I start digging and lifting. I have
been stuck worse. Well, this is were things go from bad, to really, really
bad. In the process of digging out, another TJ came along, he didnt have
anything, not even a strap. But he was willing to help. Mostly they talked
to my girl freind as I dug and swore underneath my Cruiser. I was getting
close to getting out. I all had to do was place one more rock under the tire
and I was going to have the guy strap me out. (It was my strap, he didnt
have one) I have always hated working underneath a 4x4 when it is jacked up
by a Hi-lift. I have this fear of slipping and dropping on me. I was being
as careful as possible. Everybody was clear, in case the jack shot out, I
was doing good. I was slowly postiong the rock under the tire, trying to my
hands clear........
Then it happend...
The Jack slipped and the Land Cruiser came down on the rock. I thought I
was ok (that thought lasted about .2 nanoseconds) unitl I realised, that my
right index finger was pinned between a big rock and 33" General mud tire
attached to 5300 pound 4x4.. I kept my cool and told the guy to start
helping me dig. (I would have had him use the Jack, but he didnt know how to
use one. This was not the time to give someone a lesson.) The ground was
soft and digging was the quickest and simplest way to go. Soon, the rock
started dropping and the rear of the Cruiser sat on the bridge and I was able
to get my finger out. All in all, everyone figures I was under there for
about 30 to 45 seconds. My finger, was crushed. Nothing was broken but it
was literally squeeshed flat. I had on have leather gloves which is the only
thing that saved the sand and mud from removeing the skin from the bone.
Imagine 20 grit sand paper with a 1000 Lbs of presure. My girl freind
whipped out the first aid kit and I popped a bunch of Ibuprofren ( I have
no idea how to spell that ). It took about 5 to 10 minutes for my finger to
start to fill back out. Literally, it looked like something out of a
cartoon. With in 30 minutes I could move my finger without much
restriction, and tonight I can sit here and type this with no problems. I
was way lucky. I used up a lot of prayer time on that one. We packed up and
we headed up to play in the snow.
This was supposed to be an easy easy trail, but, somehow I managed to end
up with the back of Cruiser of a concrete bridge and my finger pinned under
the tire. Ya, Murphy was there, I could smell him. The point of this is to
show, you never, NEVER know when it is going to hit the fan. I was lucky. I
had my gear. I was able to take care of my self. But I almost left with out
it. And God only knows how bad it could have been. Always take your stuff.
And if you done have any, GET IT.
I know in the past, people have past around the list of what to carry when
they go out. But I know alot of you dont for one reason or another. Take
this story to heart.
These things saved my ***, and finger,
*Hi-lift, tow strap, First Aid Kit, Max-Ax Muiltipurpose tool (or shovel and
stuff), Gloves, proper clothing. ( I was outside for almost an hour over
this, and we where getting snowed on)
I hope this helps, Take the story for what you want, a good humor story, or
a good lesson or both. By the way, the mouse, he was fine. He got away.
Best Regards

It seems that the majority of people are experiencing death wobble by having an out-of-balance tire in the front or one that is out of round. This could also be coupled with worn out bushings, but I seem to remember a number of people commenting that rebalancing their tires took care of the problem. Anyone agree with that?

Another possibility....did new rims go on it w/ the new tires? If so, a rim w/ excessive runout could also be a culprit. The easiest thing to do is rotate the rears to the front and see what happens.

Next time you see a mouse... Run it over... let there be no questions!
I feel for you though there is nothing like that feeling of
desperation when your out in the middle of no/some-where and don't
have the proper tools to get home. I think I would add Water a CB and
a Cell phone to that list of mandatory things. Glad you made it home

OK.
I have the Q-jet problem worked out.
I took the advice of several people on the list, tried re- adjusting the
carb, to no avail.
Talked to Kenyon Carbs, he's not taking any work until after the New Year,
so I told him I would go to Bob Reems at B&R Automotive, Bob took one look
at the carb, said it was a 1975, they made it one year and it was junk. GM
realized their error, and changed them after that. Nobody can work on them.
(My luck, huh) Talked to Randy at Driven Auto, he has several down there.
Just for fun I bolted it up and the damn thing runs better than the Carter I
replaced , and the Q-jet needs a rebuild!! Looks like I'm back on track.
Thanks to all who responded, and for those of you searching for performance
out of your rig, I highly recommend B&R Automotive. These guys know their

Hi again,

Subject: RE: Re: Wheel spacers????
Gary,
How many of us actually run wheels with the factory 5.25" backspacing?
Nobody that I run with does. We all run 3.75-4.5" backspacing so our larger
than stock tires will have the clearance they need to prevent rubbing on our
spring perches, control arms, leafsprings (for the CJ and YJ guys), etc.
I agree that more stress is placed on the bearings. I have no arguement with
you when it comes to that. Of course winching my Jeep over every little
pebble on the trail is probably worse than running my oversize, bearing
killing wheels and tires. <Grin> I think I'll give the winch a rest and keep
running my 35" tires on 15x10" (3.75" backspaced) wheels. For most of us the
bearing life argument is of little concern.
I took a chance to check out your Scrambler on the website. I especially
liked the bearing killing "playing with fire" non stock wheels with 33's
mounted on your CJ8. Nice rig. <Grin>

Joey:
Either way, when you change the length of the lever in the equation you are
loading the bearing beyond it's design. In my book this is not desirable.
I have seen the results first hand (though on a low-rider Mustang) when the
bearing disintegrated at freeway speed. Obviously they had a set of those
extreme dished wheels mounted with
the exaggerated offset (not to mention the VW tires streached over them.).
Not a pretty picture. I asked the guy driving if he had had problems with
wheel bearings. He said "No, I just change them every month!"
Perhaps the physical size of the bearings for a 4x4 vehicle help keep this
situation under control by being overdesigned in the first place because of
the duty cycle imposed on them in projected off-road use. Stills sounds
like playing with fire, wheel spacers or not.
Just my humble opinion.

it measured ten feet. it is yellow, with black, red, and silver reflective stripes. almost new "perception" paddles that break down and store in the kayak. the paddles can also be set in different stroke positions. this a kayak you sit in an in-closed space, it has a skirt attachment, but i do not have the skirt. the water proof skirt cost around 80.00 at popular outdoors. i was selling the kayak for 80.00 bucks but the guy never came through so, it is now for 90. because i have a life jacket that goes with. i bought it from a friend who used it pretty avidly at salt river and tempe town lake. it is registerd for tempe town lake 12/01 it expires this month. my wife hardly used it. it is fast and fun.

As far as a mechanic I would try Mike @ Kiatek 3601 E Speedway 327-7313 he is
also a member of the Tucson Rough Riders. As far as tires we always have
good luck at Discount Tire and they beat or match prices. There is a guy on
this list who works at Discount in Phx His name is Rick Beers he may be able
to help you out.

I'm glad it turned out okay for you. I remember Len's post a year or so back
about the rollover he witnessed out near Bartlett. You posted this as a
reminder to all that we really are in a dangerous sport and need to be
careful. Thanks for being humble enough to post it.
You did break rule #1 - Never go out wheeling alone. Had you been following
me you'd have never gotten stuck. The mouse would have been a red spot in
the snow. See how important it is to take a friend? <Grin>

Subject: [az_vjc] Must Read 4x4ing Lesson/Story, And a mouse
Ok, I am telling this so people will see the importance of being prepared.
Hopefully, by reading it, it will make your next trip a bit safer. And maybe
get a get a lugh out of it. I think in a week or two I might begin to laugh
myself.
Last night, my girlfreind and I went up to Fourpeaks to go see some snow.
Innocent trip. What could happen? It is a graded road all the way up, be
there and back in 5 hours... No problem. What could go wrong? Thats what
I
was thinking... so with that in mind, so I loaded up all my rescue stuff,
my
shovels, Max-Ax, straps, and Hi-Lift, out of my rock buggy, "Big Ugly",
into
my Land Cruiser and took off for the mountains. (Mind you, this is the
first
time I have had my Land Cruiser offroad in over 2 years, but that is a
longer
story)
So, I am on my way to the top, making good time, haveing a great time with
girlfreind. Ok, then comes the mouse. This furball darted out in front of
me and did that "headlight stop" right in front of me, I hit the brakes and
stopped. I think he is gone and keep going, about 100 yards down the road,
my girlfreind is worried, "What if you hit him and his just hurt, I dont
want
him to suffer".
Because of a mouse, I happend
to
back off the only 8 foot span of concrete on a 18 friggin mile long trail.
I all had to do was place one more rock under the
tire
and I was going to have the guy strap me out.
(I would have had him use the Jack, but he didnt know how
to
use one. This was not the time to give someone a lesson.) The ground was
soft and digging was the quickest and simplest way to go. Soon, the rock
started dropping and the rear of the Cruiser sat on the bridge and I was
able
to get my finger out. All in all, everyone figures I was under there for
about 30 to 45 seconds. My finger, was crushed. Nothing was broken but it
was literally squeeshed flat. I had on have leather gloves which is the
only
thing that saved the sand and mud from removeing the skin from the bone.
We packed up
and
we headed up to play in the snow.
This was supposed to be an easy easy trail, but, somehow I managed to end
up with the back of Cruiser of a concrete bridge and my finger pinned under
the tire. Ya, Murphy was there, I could smell him. The point of this is
to
show, you never, NEVER know when it is going to hit the fan.
( I was outside for almost an hour over
this, and we where getting snowed on)
I hope this helps, Take the story for what you want, a good humor story,
or
a good lesson or both. By the way, the mouse, he was fine. He got away.
Best Regards
John K

One thing that is nice in the Sahara are the seats. I think Scott K. will
even admit that when we were checking out seats on the Moab trip, he was
somewhat impressed with the comfort factor compared to a regular TJ seat.
Other than that, much of the Sahara "stuff" came off (side steps, rock panel

I myself haven't taken anything to them, but I've heard lots of good
things about the guys at Kiatek (I think he started out as a Kia
mechanic but they know a lot about Jeeps as well). I've wheeled with
Mike a couple times and he seems like a great guy. I'm sure he'll
help you out. If I ever have any problems with my Jeep (knock on
wood), that's where I'll be taking them.
If you were a Tucson Rough Riders member, you'd probably get a
discount. Meetings are on the 4th Tuesday (not the last Tuesday) of
every month at the FOP Lodge on Dodge, a couple blocks south of
River. Membership is fairly easy, go on a couple runs, go to a couple
meetings and get voted in (not too hard if you're a responsible
wheeler).
I've dealt with the Discount Tire on Kolb and Golf Links (the guy's
name there was Neil). They didn't give me any discounts (I had some
Goodyear coupons though), but they really were very helpful and have
always treated me great. Maybe the AZVJC Discount Tire contact can
hook us Old Pueblo guys up with a good DT salesperson down here???

Subject: RE: [Tech] 91 Wrangler YJ - Additional lifts? for Yj's
First question. Why do you want more lift? What kind of wheelin' do you do?
Yes you can add a little bit more to your lift as is. Maybe 1/2" or 1" lift shackles could do the trick. BUT you are getting in to a height that could cause problems with your rear drive line. You could experience vibrations which will require what's called a CV Drive Shaft. The most common application of this is to also use a Slip Yoke Eliminator Kit on the transfer case's rear output. This could run about 5 or 6 hundred dollars (CV drive shaft and SYE).
The "reerse leaf springs over your axles" or more commonly know as SOA (spring over axle). Is another way to lift the Jeep. This is something many have done and is something I will be doing in the future as well. I too have a 3.5" spring lift and will have to swap out these springs for 2.5" or Stock springs. With a SOA you will gain about 5 - 5.5" of lift over stock. So with 3.5" plus 5.5 you would be WAY up at an uncomfortable 9". It is not as easy as it looks. Sure it is pretty simple to just put on some new spring perches and mount your axels but there are several hidden aspects to consider.
First the steering setup. Right turns will be limited because the drag link will be hitting the leaf springs. You will have to accommodate for this with either a S shaped drag link (easiest and possibly cheaper) or the stronger knuckle over. A knuckle over puts the Tie Rod and Drag link over the leaf springs. This could require a new axel or serious modification of your current one (assuming you have a Dana 30 front axle).
Second is the front and rear shock lengths and mounts. The reason most do a lift is for looks. If this is your case the shocks may not be an issue. The reason most Jeep owners do a lift is for articulation. You will need to get longer shocks, and to accommodate for the longer shocks you will want to raise the shock mounts. Here there is some cutting and welding involved for the front. The rear may be ok as is but to receive the full benefit you should opt for something to increase your shock length here as well.
Thirdly. Spring wrap. If you are going to do hard core rock crawlin' you will want to consider spring wrap. Spring wrap is caused by the torque induced at the axle when negotiating obstacles. Specifically when trying to climb or get over an obstacle. You will either want to have a torque bar that will minimize this or change your springs often. How often will mostly depend on how often you wheel, how hard you wheel and what kind of engine you have.
Now after you have read all that let me tell you that this is knowledge I have accumulated over the last year or so. I have yet to do a SOA but like I said it is in my future. If there is something I left out or am wrong about I am sure someone will correct me.

Scott,
I'll admit that sitting in the Mastercraft seats is pretty comfy. But I
also remember someone complain about the bruising after a couple of days on
the October Moab run. ;) Maybe they need to make a flip down side on those
seats for an easier exit. :p

Stu,
I'm going on what JW said about his Sahara seats before we bolted our
Mastercraft Seats in. I'll admit the Sahara seats are slightly better than
the Sport seats, though nowhere near as comfy as the Mastercraft seats.
Maybe listening to JW is where I went wrong? <Grin>

I ended up with a Sahara, but hey, I bought mine with 10K miles on it so
what can I say?
One thing that is nice in the Sahara are the seats. I think Scott K. will
even admit that when we were checking out seats on the Moab trip, he was
somewhat impressed with the comfort factor compared to a regular TJ seat.
Other than that, much of the Sahara "stuff" came off (side steps, rock panel
molding, etc.) after I got it off-road.

Around $15K for bare bones up to around $25K fully loaded. (prices are
estimates) Make sure you really want the Sahara package. I didn't want some
of the frills or want to pay for most of the "extras" the Sahara has. I
configured a Sport the way I wanted. Besides, you couldn't get a Sahara in

John K

Glad you made it home
safe though..

Hi again,
Got my grubby hands on a complete A/C set up from an 88' to put into

Nice rig. <Grin>

Just my humble opinion.

could have wheels made with the desired backspacing. both methods will put
the same extra strain on the wheel bearings.

You did break rule #1 - Never go out wheeling alone. Had you been following

Because of a mouse, I happend
to
back off the only 8 foot span of concrete on a 18 friggin mile long trail.
I all had to do was place one more rock under the
tire
and I was going to have the guy strap me out.
( I was outside for almost an hour over
this, and we where getting snowed on)
I hope this helps, Take the story for what you want, a good humor story,
or
a good lesson or both.

Subject: Re: Tire/Mechanic Discounts in Tucson?

The coolest part about owning a banana Jeep is that when it begins to rust
it still looks like a (over ripe) banana. <hehe>
Oh yeah, before getting in your banana Jeep be sure to check for spiders.
Sometimes they hitch a ride in the crate....

I need some help or advice. I have a 3.5 superlift with about a 1 or 1 1/2 inch body lift with 33's BFG's. I want a additioanl extension to my lift is that possible? Or do i need a whole new kit? I wa also curious about the reerse leaf springs over your axles? Is that conversion expensive? What do you reccommend?

Scott,
I'll admit that sitting in the Mastercraft seats is pretty comfy. But I
also remember someone complain about the bruising after a couple of days on
the October Moab run. ;) Maybe they need to make a flip down side on those
seats for an easier exit. :p

Stu,
I'm going on what JW said about his Sahara seats before we bolted our
Mastercraft Seats in.
