Most of those guys on it are Jeep owners who have the Howell kit. The
rest of the guys have built their own systems from salvage yard
parts. They have seen most every problem or issue and should be able
to help if needed.
Ross you have aftermarket ignition (jacobs) right? This might be an
area that gives you a small problem. Might want to call Howell and
see if there is anything you need to know ahead of time. The Howell
kit needs a 'tach' signal.
Good Luck,

Joe,
I've been running 1/4" spacers on my TJ ever since I put in the Centramatic
wheel balancers and found they wouldn't clear my rims. They were cheap and
work well. I took the time to install longer studs as necessary. It's been
on there for about 2 years.

Stu,
I haven't looked up any failures... my comments concerning spacers come
simply from the physics of adding spacers and nothing more. If you add
spacers, you have simply introduced another failure mechanism into a fairly
important system (assuming that keeping your wheels on is important <grin>).
Wheel spacers are a kludge... a band-aid... something best left to street
Jeeps. Here's just a small example; Most of the spacers I have seen are
aluminum spacers with steel studs. Ultimately, galvanic corrosion will cause
this setup to fail and the studs to pull out of the spacer plate. Do you
think that most people who use spacers even KNOW about galvanic corrosion?
Do you think that they care? Probably not. If the spacers are made out of
steel... then this problem goes away, and you next have to deal with
doubling the number of lug nuts you have which hold on your wheels... how
many people want to check the torque of the wheel spacers each time they
install their wheels... 10 lug nuts instead of 5 per wheel (and not 10 lug
nuts in parallel holding the wheel on which (in a simple analysis) would
reduce the failure rate of the retaining system by a factor of two... but
rather, two sets of 5 lug nuts in parallel which (in a simple analysis)
would DOUBLE the failure rate of the retaining system).
My paranoia about such things comes from working in the aerospace industry
and flying aircraft... when your life depends on the quality of a simple
mechanical system (such as wheel attachment), it doesn't make sense to add
in complexity and potentially serious failure points when you don't have to.
In summary, previous failures or not; wheel spacers are an incredibly bad
idea.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Ross,
I installed a Howell on my '84 CJ7 with a 258. I don't know about the
Jacobs, but I had to buy a tach filter from Howell for about $50 to
make mine work with an MSD. The tach worked fine without it but when
I started it up without the filter, it just sprayed gas like it was
floored since it thought each multiple spark was a single spark.
Never had any problems with it after that. It's a great system.

Yeah Im just not sure how the Jacobs system works. If you still have
the stock ignition coil, I think the green wire on the negative side
will be the 'tach' signal you use for the TBI's computer. Tap into
that wire and you should be good to go. Of course its all in the
instructions.
Here is a page I had bookmarked that may help with the
installation... (It is possible Howell has updated their
instructions so this info may now be irrelevant)....

Subject: BP even MORE expensive!
Hey Joe & all,
I know you corrected yourself but it gets worse...
I just got the price list from BP.
You have to use the FF1RS rear bumper to use the swing out, it is
actually $309 (not $256 for the FF1R rear)
Add the swing out (RCT-SOC): $466
$775 + shipping (I don't care to ask)
If you just need to add a swing out for an oversized tire (like me),
the O-R Fab is cheap by comparisson since you don't have to buy a new
bumper.
Thanks,
Dan

And don't forget that bulletproof charges you extra for all of the
accessories...i.e. jerry can mounts, high lift mount, d-rings, etc.
Those extras aren't cheap either.
Since BP charged me $60 to ship my front bumper, I am guessing the
rear bumper/tire carrier would cost over $100 to ship. Plus BP is
always backed up at least 6 weeks.
But to each his own, I have a bulletproof on the front and or-fab on
the rear. They both make great products IMO.

I have been stating away from the board because of finals and [MB].
While some of it is quite amuzing, to say the least, it does get in
the way of the Jeep topics and questions. Bring on the [MB] prefix I
would like to be helped with my Jeep topics and help others.
Thanks.

No it doesn't.
You need to replace the word "Rock" with the words "Spank yer".

Most of those guys on it are Jeep owners who have the Howell kit. The

to help if needed.
Ross you have aftermarket ignition (jacobs) right? This might be an
area that gives you a small problem. Might want to call Howell and
see if there is anything you need to know ahead of time. The Howell
kit needs a 'tach' signal.

Joe,
I've been running 1/4" spacers on my TJ ever since I put in the Centramatic
wheel balancers and found they wouldn't clear my rims. They were cheap and
work well. I took the time to install longer studs as necessary. It's been
on there for about 2 years.

Subject: RE: [az_vjc] Wheel spacers????
Stu,
I haven't looked up any failures... my comments concerning spacers come
simply from the physics of adding spacers and nothing more. If you add
spacers, you have simply introduced another failure mechanism into a fairly
important system (assuming that keeping your wheels on is important <grin>).

Outlook... once I can get them to understand it, then I'll go try and teach
Chris. I figure he will be much less of a challenge after I learn to teach
the monkeys.

Thanks.

Hey Chris K or rock monkey or spank yer monkey...
Not sure what to call you now. What was the name of that nice perfume
you were wearing at Joe's house on Saturday? I think that would make
a good Christmas gift for the little mrs.
JW - didn't you think he smelled nice?

Ross, since'n you've got a CJ, check this site. I'm not familiar with the install (still have my carter), but this looks pretty informative to me. Go to "Projects".

Good luck with the project. I'd like to see it, either during or after the install.

Since the keyboard is here and the phone is across the room, I'll ask a
question here.
Does NAPA carry a Spicer SET10, or do they have "their" house brand only?
Thanks........Stu
p.s. SET10 = D44 rear axle bearing and retainer
