Does it count that I welded the vice on top of my expensive bumper?
(and then the weld broke)
<grin>

There is NOTHING... absolutely NOTHING cooler than building it yourself!!!
(this is the truest statement I've made today)
And for those of you who are curious... it's a FACT!!!

(wishes he had the time and talent to build my own bumpers... of course if I
did, they would look like shi$ and would fall off the first bump I hit (you
know, like the curbs going to the grocery store))

Joe,

I've had the BP setup for a couple years as we all know. If the price was
the same I'd opt for the ORF bumper and carrier to do it again. I really
like their setup and its plenty stout for the most hardcore of trails.

But, if the BP is cheaper its an easy choice.

Scott,

This is fun... and I'm glad you brought the subject up.
I bet lots of people learned something from this discussion.
Let me summarize the finer points for everyone:

1. OR Bumpers and spare tire carriers are Junk that only idiots purchase.
2. The only true Jeeper owns a TJ with Bulletproof bumpers front and rear.
3. Coil springs rule and leaf springs drool

See how much we've covered in the last 2 dozen posts?
<grin>

This guy wakes up one morning to find Joe West sitting in his tree. He looks in the phone book for a gorilla removal service until he finds one. "Is it a boy or girl?" the service guy asks. "Boy," is the man's response. "Oh yeah, I can do it. I'll be right there", says the service guy.
An hour later the service guy shows up with a stick, a Chihuahua, a shotgun, and a pair of handcuffs. He then gives the man some instructions: "Now, I'm going to climb this tree and poke Joe West with the stick until he falls. When he does, the trained Chihuahua will bite Joe West's testicles off. Joe West will then cross his hands to protect himself and allow you to put the handcuffs on him."

The man asks, "What do I do with the shotgun?" The service guy replies, "If I fall out of the tree before Joe West, shoot the Chihuahua."

I need to buy a good wire crimping tool to do some rewiring on my CJ-7. Painless Performance Products recommends using one and given my lack of success in the past with pliers I guess they're right. But I've never seen any at Sears or Walmart. Can anyone refer me to a good tool and a place to get it. I'm not even sure what a good crimping tool looks like.
By the way. My Jeep has bumperettes on the back. Is that bad?

grainger supply, graybar electric or others, maybe home depot. Klein crimpers, for insulated wire terminals. They have a teat in the crimp anvil that puts a bulge into the wire that will prevent it from slipping. Do not get the oval style that does not keep the wire stable. The kleins are thick, heavy, and will last for years.

Radio shack. But I would take a sample of your product to be crimped so you get the right ones. A good crimping tool will cost you some bucks but you should be able to get by with one from radio shack for a reasonable price.
If you prefer the more expensive ones, there are a few electronics parts places. Circuit Specialist is one that comes to mind. I think they are still located in Mesa.

Hey Joe,
Not to put a target on my forehead but.... why do you think BP has
dropped the price? Any change in materials or construction? Or
just more competition nowdays?
Also was that price for a Bumper & Tire/Jerry Can Carrier or just
the Bumper & Tire Carrier?

I had remove BP from my list because I thought they were
around $800 for a Bumper & Tire/Jerry Can Carrier. I'm about to
get the O-R Fab carrier but might have to give BP a 2nd look.

Thanks,
Dan

Joe, I kind of remember your bumper. I went and looked at it on their
sight. Seems fine, but, just going off of my experiences with destroying two
kind of stock carriers doing wheelies on waterfalls. Just having a post for
the carrier and no upper support would not survive very long with 38's and
35s will at least weaken it. With your cute little tires it may be just
fine...who knows.

Also, even with trussing into the frame (that has issues also) the flexing
and jarring will crack the frame unless it is stabalized higher up.

Now the EE can disect that for fun.

Yep, I have to admit, its been offroad twice.

Coincidentally, both time's I had to use the winch to save Joe's a**!

<Grin>

I'm dropping out of responding to Joe's posts now. I think I've stoked him
up enough for one night.

Hey!

I think that Scott Kruize's used his Jeep offroad twice (maybe).
Does this make HIM a real man?

Just to prove I'm still here.......why would anyone PAY $50.00 for scrap
steel to build a bumper from when they can get scraps for free from Wells
Cargo? My shorty bumper cost less than $20 to build, and all of that was
for the hardware to attach it and a BF drill bit. It's supported/anchored
my truck many....umm, several.......ummm, one or two times.

Joe,

LOL, LOL :-)

No manliness comparisons!

Well, not unless you have no doors, no top, no heat, no a/c AND have
fabricated your own bumpers. Manual transmission, brakes and steering
MAY be required in some cases to compensate for lack of manliness.
