I think this issue came up a long time ago. I believe
the email notifications from the AZVJC website are
somehow considered to be "attachments". If you
disable attachments, Mike will have to do alot of work
on the website.

Joe, from the sound of things, you have an AZVJC email
subscription going directly to your work email. Just
disable that subscription and read your email from
yahoo or some other free internet email service.

I can see your point, but if you don't want them coming through on
yor e-mail, read all the messages from yahoogroups. I changed my
preferences so I recieve no email, then just check the yahoogroups
site several times a day.

Mine switched a few days ago. When you use the "post" from the
yahoo/groups page the author shows up as yahoo ID. If you post with
an email it will be your name default from your email program.
It used to be my name all of the time, I don't know what happened.

Subject: [TR] Ajax (Lower) - Saturday, December 8, 2001

Hello All,

Mike Baney is leading an Ajax (Lower) trail run on Saturday, December 8, 2001.

When: 8:00 AM
Where: Texaco at Florance Junction
Rating: 3.5+
Length: 3 hours
CB Channel: 4

Lower Ajax wash crosses and continues along portions of the road to the Ajax Mine. It is the typical "wash;" for the most part you cross over and around the rock obstacles. There are a few 2 - 4 ft. waterfalls or narrow rock areas to find your way over or through but there are several by-passes. The wash is set among the rolling hills below the Ajax Mine.

This trail is fun and a challenge for the moderate 4-wheeler, although this trail is not for the inexperienced driver nor a stock vehicle.

A rear Traction Device, and 31" + tires are required..

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

This is a repeat of Stu's last email so pardon the repetition.

Just a reminder - The seminar starts at 9AM and will be done no later than noon. We will be giving away a full copy of OziExplorer to some lucky participant courtesy of D&L Software Pty Ltd, of Australia, (I received it in the mail today - $75 value!).

I will post another email to this group with GPS points for the entrance to the Community Center. If anyone needs directions on the day of the seminar call my cell 602-432-7860.

We have plenty of room for more so if you want to hone your GPOS skills, please fell free to join us. Bring a friend.

Subject: Need suggestions for easy scenic newbie trails

Quite a few people at my work have recently purchased Jeeps and I
want to show them what kind of world is now open to them. They are
all interested in going out on a trail run but they are extremely
inexperienced and maybe a little timid... I doubt they know how to
shift their vehicles into 4wd.

I need suggestions on scenic, easy trails north or west of Phoenix so
I can scout a few out before I lead them. Something of a 4 or 5 hour
duration would be good.

For comparisons sake, FR42 would be way too intimidating for these
people. Crown King might be a little much as well.

Any thoughts?

Joe,

Again maybe its just me but I like to see all the pictures that the fellow
members send as attachments. I know that some people could probably just
send a link to where they have the photos stored online but some can not do
that. Have you considered unsubscribing your work email address from the
list and only receive the emails from your personal account, that is what I
have done.

Doug,

The problem isn't that I am getting the virus... I have Norton's 2001 that I
update every day so it catches these viruses... the problem is at work; my
network administrator is starting to notice all the virus which come to me
via the AZVJC. He gets notified everytime they catch a virus on my email
account and I'm tired of explaining.

The bottom line is that there is ABSOLUTELY no reason to allow attachments
to our group; it causes far too many problems.

Subject: 11.5" baja claw on 8" rim?

Hi All,
Shaun here again posting from South Korea. It seems that my tire dilemna is finally coming to an end. I got hooked up today with a second hand set of 31x11.5" r15 baja claws for US$600 (no spare). Might not seem like a great deal to you guys, but they retail for $1100 over here and there aren't that many around. I'm kind of wondering whether I was wise going with such a wide tire, but didn't have much choice as my spare's side wall is shredded and one of the tires I am running now has a pinhole in it's sidewall too..... I'm currently running just normal road tires and they aren't great. Both got shredded driving through a construction site.

My rims are only 8", and I'm curious whether I should expect any problems with the 11.5" tire? Mickey thompson says 8~10" is ok, does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, especially when airing down? Am I more or less likely to drop a bead?

These tires are the bias belted, and I think they're pretty soft. Any ideas as to what I should be expecting in terms of usable life? About 80% road use and 20% medium to hard trailing in mud, snow and water, not much rock crawling. The guy has been using them for only 2 months and 15% of the tread is worn off already! Is 20,000 miles a ludicrous expectation? That's about what I cover in a year and I'd be happy to get a year out of these tires.

One final question about spares. Since I can only get four of these tires I'm faced with a choice; wait for a single to pop up for sale (not unlikely, I've seen them before, but I'd have to wait a month or two) or buy a new tire. I've seen other guys buy the Geolandar M/T as their spare when running Baja claws. They are sized simlar and have a similar tread pattern too. They are about 40 cheaper. Any thoughts on this?

Just a couple of misc. questions....

Is there anything I can do to get better tire mileage (sarcastic comments also welcome ;-)). My better half is somewhat upset about the price of offroad tires and lengthening the time between purchases reduces my chances of divorce. Heavy loads, hard cornering, strong acceleration and braking are all obvious contenders, but are there any secrets?

Lastly, what do you guys do to prevent people pinching your tires? And is this a real issue? Is anybody using those wheel nuts that have a special key (these don't look much good to me). Anybody TIG'd their rims to their hubs? Engraved their license numbers onto their tires ;-)

I'm talking about diff locks, not whatever sordid things you get up to in the shower after tennis .... ;-)

What would happen if you put a diff lock in the front diff only, would the car always have the front wheels turning, or would it lose all power if one of the rears cut loose? I used to drive Front wheel drive vehicles in snow and mud and used the handbrake to good effect while powering out of corners.... it's hard getting used to the rear wheel drive on my jeep.

Thanks,
Shaun

4 Peaks road from SR87 to the Tonto Basin is a nice, scenic, and easy run.
