We in the desert are scared of mud. We don't know what it is or what
to do with it. <grin> I need to put my soft top on first, then I'll
go do some playin. I can't put it on myself, due to the CAST on my
left hand! Anyone want to come by and put it on for me?

36333 From: Mike Connor <mike@m...>
Date: Tue Dec 4, 2001 2:17pm
Subject: Re: SM420 / Dana 300...some thoughts...

Tom,

Some considerations concerning Truck 4 speeds...

If your goal is to put truck 4 speed behind an AMC engine,
the Muncie 420 is not the ideal choice for the reasons you
discovered. You must aquire a conversion bellhousing. The
420 is more suited for Chevy V6/V8/Buick V6 conversions.

For the AMC, the Ford T18 or the Ford NewProcess 435 is a
smart choice. Stay away from the Jeep T18; it only has a 4:1
first gear ratio. The Ford T18 has a 6.32:1 first, while the
435 has a 6.69:1 first. Aquire a bellhousing from a 76-79 CJ;
it has the Ford bolt pattern and the above mentioned trannys
will bolt right up. Both will require a T/C adapter.

Another consideration- of the 2 above mentioned trannys, the
435 is actually a better bet, even though the T18 is the common
"buzzword" when it comes to truck 4 speed conversions.

Some points to consider-
*The 435 has a slower first gear; 6.69 as opposed to the T18's
6.32
*(Just as important) The 435 has a slower 2nd gear (the one you
spend a lot more time in than first gear) 3.34 as opposed to the
T18's 3.09...most stock Jeep trannys have a 3:1 first gear (I'm
referring to the older 3 speed trannys here). Most guys put bigger
tires on their Jeeps then have to slip the clutch more to get going.
They think that going to a T18 will solve their problems. While
the T18 will give you the lower first gear, its really too slow to
use on the street. So, you start out in second, which is about the
same ratio (3:1) as your stock tranny. So, street-wise you've
gained nothing by going to the T18.
*The 435 is around an inch shorter (10.75 as opposed to the T18's
11.87 inches), which gains you an inch on your rear driveline.

Make sure you find the 2WD version of either trans with the 6.5"
input shaft.

Offroad, you can't go wrong with either one; the added control
offered by the granny gear is awesome, and is much easier on the
Jeep.:-)

The length of the T/C adapter for each tranny is roughly the same
(4 inches or so) so driveline modifications are necessary. Floorpan
mods are also hard to get awawy from.

I've done conversions with the 420, T18, 435, and SM465 and have
one of each in my shop if a visual would help...

Hope this helps,

Uncle Mike

It really depends on how much you want to play around and which way you
choose to go in and come out. They're at least 3 major entrances/exists,
with different levels of difficulities
- Three Feathers - 3.5
- Compass Tank - 3.0
- Italian Trap - 4.0

You can make some parts of the trip what ever you want. You can probably
"toughen up" the Italian Trap area by not doing any of the by-passes and
going when the water is high ;)
Also, at Three Feathers itself, there are 3 paths up or down it,
depending on which way you are traveling. The Highway (center), is the
easiest, followed by the Crack, sometimes known as the Chute, and lastly
the Keyhole.

Cheers,
Fred

Hmm, I remember mud like that in Panama (where it rains litterally
every day from Feb 15 to Dec 15; 60 to 120 inches every year) I
remember someone sinking a Hummer up to it's door handles in mud on
the Drop Zone. We parked a loader on the "hard pack" to hook up the
chains to the stuck hummer, by the time we got the chains on and
turned around the loader was up to its axles in it.

Stu didn't give any advice on a new antenna???

I'm running a 4' Firestick II. They're fairly easy to come by (check
your local truck stop or visit Fry's Electronics) I think they have
them as well... Or if you prefer to shop at home, I got mine at
http://www.valcoelectronics.com you can read about them at
http://www.firestik.com). Mine seems to work fine. It's tuneable, and
inexpensive (about $14). I prefer the look and function of a
fiberglass antenna to that of a wire whip. I'm sure there are
advantages and disadvantages to both. But, I couldn't tell you what
they are.

Wilson seems to be a good brand for the wire whips. Again, I can't
tell you much about them as I don't have one and have never used one
before.

I also have a quick disconnect on my antenna (like this one:
http://www.firestik.com/Catalog/K&R-1A.htm) . The antenna sticks up
rather high (mounted on my rear tire carrier) and I need to take it
off to fit in the garage. Don't get one of those springs because your
antenna will just be whipping all over the place on a trail run.

I can attest that the fiberglass antennas are pretty durable. I once
forgot to disco the antenna and drove into the garage. I thought the
thing was going to poke itself right through the garage door. The
only way for me to get it off without breaking it was to actually
bend it further than it was already bent, tie it off, and then
disconnect it.

A firestick antenna I've been told is the best. Thats what I'm using and am
happy with it. Bronco One carries them and I've seen that Fry's Electronics
also but not for sure about that.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Lake Pleasant to Crown King - Saturday, December 1, 2001

Hello All,

Joey Kulich lead a trail run Saturday, December 1, 2001 across Lake Pleasant to Crown King

Well one friend had tranny problems and the other had a prior engagement. There were three Jeeps (ZJ, TJ, YJ) that embarked on this adventure. We aired down and after a late start we headed to Crown King. What a perfect day. Temperature was in the low 70s and very few clouds in the sky. About half way we met up with a retired couple in an XJ. He showed off his GPS, Laptop and tracking software which was pretty impressive. If I understood them correctly they travel the country 4 wheelin' while taking pictures of old mines and just exploring. I can only hope I have it so well in my later days. All in all an uneventful day with great scenery and people.
OH wait there was one unusual thing that happened. I guess some guys that were ahead of us came across an elderly lady wondering her way back to CK. She was obviously not prepared for the journey. She apparently got her truck stuck about a 2 - 3 miles from the ledge and spent the night. Then in the morning she tried to walk to CK for help (all up hill). She was disoriented and starving for food and water. The gentlemen that found her, unstuck her 2WD truck and drove her truck and her to CK. Hats off to them.
