So this was the first time in close to 7 years I haev been on this trail. The first time I rode shotgun with Stu when I visited from NJ. I knew at that point I was to somehow get my butt to AZ. I loved the trail that much.
So I finally was able to go back to it, this time in my Jeep and wow have things changed. I took 204 pictures, a strap, a winch cable, got a little sidways here and there and had a blast on the trail that reminded me so much of why I came here. There is something to say about the difference in terrain in the FJ area vs. the TM area.
Anyway, here are some pics and thanks Tony for assisting with my camera. The shots you took rocked!!!! Eric thanks for the invite. Roger is was fun seeing you again, same for you Bob. Butch (??? ~ don't kill me I'm horrible with names) your CJ was awesome to watch.
The water in Box Canyon was quite refreshing, especally when used to clean the dust off your face and arms:

The old mine. I seem to remember this in a lot better condition the last time I was through here:

Eric and his new toy:

There was lots of bumper humping today!!!!! I even got involved at one point trying to free Tony but it didn't help. Here's Roger on what he thought was a straighter line with less pucker... Opps!!:

Not to be outdone by Roger, Eric and his attempt at rolling down the canyon:
http://i10.tinypic.com/2eda6i0.jpg
On the way up the switchbacks (which they were massive pucker in and of itself), we stopped off at the old mine. Here's a pic of the old rails that now lead to nowhere:

Today was a great day!!!! Load of fun with awesome people and even with the frequent stops, we made it out of there in what I thought was good time, even with the wrong turn. :D
Tony kicked major bootie too with a stock Rbui LJ. I don't think I have ever heard of anyone goign through that trail on that tire size before. He did try some of the harder stuff, needed a strap here and there and did a bypass or two but he did well, very well for a stocker.
And Bob, I'm sorry but this was pretty much the best shot I got of you today. Of all the pics, I'm suprised I didn't have more:

Pretty sure I saw people peeing in that water last time we were out there....
Box Canyon sure is a nice leisurely little run anmd was pretty cool with water running through it.

Hrm. A decent locker or two and you wouldn't have needed your strap on. :p
Looks like it was a nice day for the cruise.
Oh, and very nice job on the pictures. You have some great ones there. http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

As always your pics always amaze me Jamie. Those are probably the best pics I've seen of that area. Glad everyone had a good time and it was uneventful for the most part. It's been a few years since I've been on those trails (with the exception of box Canyon during some geocaching in my Rhino).

Barry,
Yea a front might have helped me there but my rear passenger tire and wheel was undercutting into a rock. I was actually very worried about it and Eric even mentioned that the way it was wedged in there having a locker might have actually done some damage to the 8.8.
Mike, thanks a lot man... You should see the ones that sucked.... like this one for instance:

Can you believe it's only a 2MP camera. ;)

Wow, Jamie great pic's, last time I was up there it was with my GMC Sierra 4x4. We walked up to the Silver Bell mine and did some extensive caving there.
I see Butch came out, He was on our Raw Deal/Terminator run last month. Quite a Toys by Troy rig he has and lots of fun to watch.
Don't let Barry give you a hard time, at least we get to see your adventures. ;)

It could have been worse than the strap Jamie. That rock wasn't to nice to me either.

Had a great time! It was a long day primarily because this was the first time through the trail for some of the participants so we stopped to look at all of the sights. And then there was the strapping. And, of course, the gnats were a pain in the arse. But it was still a great run.
BTW, the summer rains have made some parts of the trail easier and other parts harder. In particular, the switchbacks are no longer the dirt roads they used to be. They are much more rocky and there are a number of wash-outs along them. It's tough to watch the trail when you have that spectacular view of the canyon off to your side but you really need to pay attention to the trail as you climb the switchbacks.

You are breaking CrMo outers on 33s? Yikes. So far I have not broken an Alloy USA 30 spline inner or outers and that's on 37s, 77:1 crawl ratio, full locker, sticky tires, gnarly trails. Yukons break like butter and stock outers seem to break easy too. I wore out a u-joint (not broken, wore it out!) on my Alloy USA shafts and no breakage.
Best be counting my blessings.

did you guys go down the shafts at silver belle ?
roger

We went in from the south side to the fork in the tracks. Then we took the left fork to where the shaft went down (as well as north and south) but stopped there. We weren't sure where the shafts went from that point.

Just an FYI - posting pics and/or reports showing you were in the mines (or the mill) is fodder for the bad guys who want to close Martinez and other trails. The mines and mill are still private property. We can keep the trail open as long as we stay on the trail. If you venture off the trail, don't post pics or reports stating such ;)
