When:Sat 9/23/06 (Night run)
Trail: Elvis & possibly Upper Ajax
Where: Meet @ the Price Road entrance @ 5:00 p.m.
Or meet at the Circle K @ Dobson & Guadalupe at 4:00p.m. Depart @4:15p.m.
CB Channel: 4
Be sure to put your name in the pole so we know your coming!

Since the weather is changing and those of us without AC can now wheel comfortably during the day, I thought that it would be fun to have one last night run!
There's a run going on the west side, but I don't want to drive that far!:p
I'm thinking about hitting FJ, Sycamore or possibly Willow springs.
Anyone up for one last night run? I'm not set on any trails at the moment so post up some ideas if you'd like to go!

If I'm in town I'd be up for it depending on the start time. I work until 6 on Saturday. I'll know for sure tomorrow if I'm heading out of town for the weekend or not.

Sorry for hijacking your thread but I think this poll is the best and closest to what the old site was like. Very effective!
Every 'trail run thread' should have this on top!!!!

Yep, when I read it earlier I wished I added that to my Recovery 101 Roster...it's a great idea! Bryan is my damn hero. :D

I'd be willing to hit Upper Ajax again, now that the YJ has some protection! I'm not sure if Dad will be up for it, he's still licking the wounds from the last trip!
If we don't do Ajax, what about Elvis? I haven't tried that trail yet.

 I will agree with this one. The canyon with all the rocks was a serious PITA and I'm still not completely fixed from my damage last weekend. But I will be by Sat. so count me as tentative for now for FJ area.

Elvis works as well

After Elvis, those wanting to go home can or we can plan something else on the spot if we bust through it fast enough. I'm 97.5 % sure I'll remember to avoid the tie rod bending rock this time as well.

Still in.

What time do you want to start? I was thinking of meeting @ 4:00pm at the Circle K on Dobson & Guadalupe (for us Chandler folk) and then getting to the flagpole @ 5:00pm.
Does that work for you?

I haven't been able to get a hold of TJ yet. He's been bugging me every weekend for the past month to go wheeling so I'm sure he'll jump at the chance once I get a hold of him.
Charlie, what was wrong with your ECTED? Did you say it wasn't unspooling? If you haven't tried it yet, try running the power directly from the battery, that "should" give the unit enough juice to operate correctly.
Let me know if that works for you.

azcharlie
09-21-2006, 08:01 PM
I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Is that what you did, running power directly from the battery? And are we meeting at Cottonwood or Price RD on Sat?

scully
09-21-2006, 08:11 PM
I just rewired it last night after talking to Mike at 4wheelers. He had talked to someone at Auburn and they said that the unit needed 13.8volts to operate correctly (so much for simple 12v operation). I thought that I'd give it a shot to see if it helps. If it doesn't work, I can easily rewire on the trail.
I'm starting to think we need a D30 ECTED support group!;)
To answer your other question, we're meeting @ the Cottonwood entrance.

If we're going to start on Elvis, we should meet at Price Rd - it's actually a shorter drive for Charlie and I as well. Let us know, you're the leader.......

Anyone else coming, should be a great night to be out in the desert.

Man I thought I was a lolligagger, leaving at the last minute. I got to Price road right after 5:00 & thought everyone that signed up must of already got there & left. With only a half tank of gas I wanted to fillup in Florence but thought I better just catch up to everyone & hope I had enough gas to last the night. So without airing down I flew down Price road passing the turnoff to Elvis, only to realize it once I was at the start of Box canyon in the sand. So I turned around found the turn to Elvis flying down the wash till the first obsticle where I aired down. I thought I should hear some chatter on the CB but got no response when trying to contact anyone. So still thinking everyone was ahead of me I continued thru Elvis at a breakneck pace. & finished it at 6:00. I then went to the red playhill & had a cold one then exited out Box Canyon. I think that was the most water I had ever seen in Box & definitelyThe fasted I had ever ran Elvis.
Oh well it was better than sitting at home. I did see a white Ford F-250 with a trailer at Price road on the way out. I figured it was one of the groups.

Dude, we hung out at PriceRd till almost 6 PM, I was the first one there at like 5:01. Sorry we missed you, we had a nice run through Elvis, played on the red hill and then came back over the top out cottonwood. Can't believe we missed you, actually didn't even see your post until just now. Next time.

The One and only pic I took.

Had a good time, and no tie-rods were hurt during the making of this run!
We did have some issues though. At the first obstacle my Dad (Highlandrubicon) decided that he wanted to sprain his ankle so he slid down the rock and twisted it nicely. Luckly he hadn't driven up the obstacle yet, so he was able to make an easy & early exit (he made it home ok and is taking it easy today)!. AZcharlie's D30 ECTED was working only when it wanted to despite our voodoo, and somewhere towards the end of the trip I lost my CB antenna and my well used stock tranny skid started to push my rear CV driveshaft into the body pan!
After some CB tag, DavidC was able to locate us and ran with us on our way back to the Cottonwood entrance.
Sorry we missed you CRAWLDAD, I didn't get to Price Rd. until about 5:15 and we hung out until about 6:00 waiting for any other latecomers. Sounds like you had a good time despite missing the group!

At last, here are some pics!

Had a great time last night! Elvis is always a fun trail, despite a nonfunctional front focker. Hope your dad's ankle gets better soon. See ya on the trails!

After Simon gets your ARB in it would be nice if he will allow you to donate the Ected to science. I'm thinking Myth Busters style. We'll create a large spud gun type of device and see what happens if we launch it directly at a canyon wall at high velocity.

Hey guys, I just wanted to say thanks again for the concern and the good time I had, until the "twist". I heard you had a fun time and met some others later on the trail. Sounds like I missed a good time.

Yep, the ankle is sore and swollen, and I've been hobbling around, taking it easy today. Hopefully we can get together and I can do Elvis with your expert guidance. Sounds like you did quite a few areas that I haven't seen yet. Can't wait!

Ian, glad you made it home OK, otherwise we would need a thread on what a bad trail leader Bryan is, lol. OK, I'm joking. Thanks for posting the pic's and posting up the run Bryan, it was a good, clean run through Elvis and then some light messing around afterwards with some kool kats.

Stay off that ankle until it get's better, the rocks will be waiting until then :)

I just barely missed you guys. I ended up about an hour late. I really wanted to put my Swampers back on after getting the rim fixed. My BFG AT's are looking more like racing slicks than dirt tires and my tire changing skills are not quite at race level yet. By the time I raced through traffic and got on the 60, I looked at the clock and thought no way I am gonna make Elvis. Even if I talked to you, I couldn't ask you to wait that long for me. I just figured I would run into you somewhere out there.

I got to Price Rd at 6:05p. Another Jeep from the club, who just finished for the day was waiting there for the rest of their group and said I just missed 3 Jeeps by about 5 minutes. So, just like Crawldad, I flew down Price Rd hoping to catch you before you turned off, cause I the only thing I knew about Elvis is that it was somewhere before Box Canyon. Well, I saw on the topo maps what I thought the turnoff was but when I got there, I didn't see anybody else. I did see a few tire tracks going up that wash and drove in a ways, but it was dark and quiet and I didn't know that route, so I went up Box Canyon.

There was a nice flow of clear water in Box Canyon almost the whole way. I've never seen that much water there before. Made for a nice ride. So I drove all the way up past the waterfall and decided to climb the ridge towards Ajax/Woodpecker. Just when I reached what seemed to be the top, I noticed the stars were amazingly bright since there was no moon. I stopped and parked and admired the easily visible milky way and the distant lights of Florence and the glow of the valley coming from the west. It wasn't long before I noticed headlights coming up the canyon towards me and then I heard a voice on the radio. I knew I would run into them. It only took about 6 or 7 minutes to run back down and catch up with them. Then I followed them out.

It was great to meet you guys, I wish I would have made it on time. It was fun playing on those rocks at the end. I just really need to do something about that dang belly skid! I swear, that gets me hung up every time out! See you on the next trip!
