When did the rules change to having to be tested every year.
On my last two rigs I only had to get it tested every two years. With this Jeep I had to get it tested last year because it came from out side of Maricopa county. When I tried to do the registration online I was told that I have to get it emissions tested unless I had purchased a two year tag. So if I get a two year tag my jeep will somehow run better for that next year that if I had only paid for a one year tag?
What the... Who came up with that?
That’s crap in my opinion. I don’t keep cars two years. I hardly keep them a year. Not to mention you don’t get a break for getting a two year since they are basing the depreciation of the vehicle on the year you are getting the tag.

I’m just pissed and feel like I am getting screwed again by AZ. Some how this is Alkidas fault… I’m sure.

I believe after a certain age it has to be tested every other year. With that being said, my '98 didn't require an emissions test this last time but the year before it did. I buy tags yearly.

For some reason there is a 2 year and a 1 year test for emissions as well? How that makes a difference I don't know?

BUT it might have something to do with the year of the rig? Is it an even year of production? since this is a even year (06) the n even year production vehicle get tested. UNLESS it's the 5th year then they need their first test. Example My truck is an 02 (even) in February 07 I ave to have my first emission test on it. I think I can only buy for 1 year to get it on the cycle and then I'll have to test it again in 08 with the option for 1 or 2 years? If I opt for 1 year? Then I won't have to test it in 09?

This is a guess. I'm not positive. but I do have to get my 02 truck tested for the first time in February. All my other vehicles were never an issue. Emission every 2 years and the option to buy 1 or 2 year registrations?

Good luck.

I think that yearly emissions testing is required once the vehicle is over 5 years old, and then its every year. The two year tags are available for newer ones up to the 5 year cutoff (no emissions testing). As expensive as tags are on the new ones the two year option is cost prohibitive for most, but once it looks like you can afford to do the two year thing then you have to do emissions once a year, along with the tag. Go Figure:confused:

I can still get two year tags and was told that if i get two year tags I don't have to do the emissions for two years.
The jeep is a 97... 9 years old.

Thats what i was thinking... every two years. I do tags yearly because I have had a Fat Bob plate for a long time and never keep cars that long. I get screwed on the tags each time I get a car. They game me a $5 credit when I sold my Dodge and moved the plate... I still had 3 months left on the plate.

Based on mingoglia's info and Bobs info, I'm guessin it's every other year opposite year of MFR. mingoglia's is a 98 (even)and had to be tested in 05(odd)? and Bob's is a 97(odd) and is requirting at test this year (06, even)?

I just registered my 90 online last week.....no emissions required since I had it done last year....maybe I'm just special, but I've been doing every other year since I've had it......

I know that for mine, the 90' I get two years tags and test every two years, so the testing and tags fall on the same dates. When I first did the 88', I didn't have to test, but I could only get a 1 year tag. then when I tested I was able to get a 2 year tag. I think that in your case you had to get tested because it was a initial test being it came from outside maricopa county, so this test should be to get it back on the "schedual" that they have for the year it should be tested.

Just did my 01 TJ for the first time since I bought it new. I have the 2 year option, but I think it is every other year for emissions from now on...I think.

it also matters if it can do the IM240 test: 95ZJ can't because of full time 4wd. 78CJ7 has to be tested every year because dosen't do IM240 (dkwhy... only pay $12 or so though... same for 95 ZJ); 89 XJ does IM240 and can get 2 yr plates; 46CJ2A NO EMISSIONS.... WAHOOOOOO:D :D

Weird Bob. My 99 had to this year be tested, but didn't last year. It's on the every two year schedule and I only buy 1 years worth of tags too.
