Went on a trip down Apache Trail to Roosevelt Lake. Not any wheeling or anything hardcore. Just a fun beautiful trip. Especially this time of year.
If you've never done this, you should check it out. Relaxing.
Here's some pics.

The pics don't do any justice to the vistas.

IMHO the Apache Trail is one of the most scenic drives in Arizona. One of the stops along the trail is the walk to lookout site that gives you a nice view of Weaver's Needle. Another is the overlook at Canyon Lake. Fish Creek canyon will expose you to a real mountain road also. Of course before you get to that one a stop at Tortilla Flats is almost mandatory. You are right this is a beautiful drive.

That was the ahem...shakedown  run for my wife's WJ. What a great drive to spend a day off. Lots of places to stop and let the dogs go for a swim too. :)

I never hear Fish Creek Hill mention that I dont remember 3 of my high school friends that went off that cliff and died back in 1963 or 64 in a green 55 ford that still lays down there at the bottom. :( Apache trail is a beautiful drive anytime of year though. :)

Hmmm, maybe I'll do that this weekend. I've heard nothing but good things about that drive and never have done it myself.

We have been on the Apache Trail fifty times since 1998, is a beautiful scenic drive but becoming more traveled and they are paving a lot of it. The whole drive only takes about and hour and a half, and Roosevelt Dam is a "must see" along with the largest single span bridge in The U.S. We live out in Roosevelt now. Life is good and getting better.

My girlfriend and I really like that drive, back in March we both called in sick one friday, and had a "fish creek hill" day.

....YES!.. and if you do eat at Tortilla Flat, the "Killer Chili" is a MUST and then go next door to the store and try some Prickly Pear ice cream to cool off your taste buds. For a fabulous view overlooking Apache Lake and the Superstition Wilderness, try the ride up to Reavis Trailhead, it's right next to the ranch on the Apache Trail, nothing drastic, just a nice Jeep climb.
Can you imagine when the Roosevelt Dam was being built (1906-1910), they used mule teams and wagons to haul supplies over Fish Creek Hill? We've read that it took a whole team of mules just to hold the wagons back while traveling dowhill.

Went again this weekend. Took the kids this time. Just had to show them. (they were at their moms last time) so we had the XJ loaded up with four people, two large dogs and all our gear. Twas a bit crowded.
The kids LOVED the trip.

I've never done that trail. Looks like one I may want to take the kids/wife in the Navigator and go for a drive. I assume this is pretty much just a dirt road?

My son has just gotten potty trained over the last few weeks so I guess I have to teach him how to use the "facilities" outdoors before we go. ;)

Probably half or more is still dirt road. Awesome trip. Been down (up?) it many times. Budget some time for a stop at the Tortilla Flats store and post office. Prickley Pear ice cream is a personal favorite.

hehe ya, it's just a dirt road. There are some off shoots that are pretty jeepy, but for the most part, it's just dirt road. You could probably run a passenger car through all of it.
Bring some camping gear. Head all the way to the dam. then past it to the intersection. Make a left there and head over the giant suspension bridge and drive for a few miles. Soon you'll see a turnoff for a campsite called bermuda flat at roosevelt lake. it's pretty this time of year. Easy campin.
