Anyone know anything about these handguns? I own a Walther PPK/s .380 acp and a DA38 Derringer .38 special, which are great for carry guns but I'm looking for a larger caliber home protection piece. I like the idea of 13+1 rounds in a small package and the gun has gotten some good reviews. Just looking for opinions I guess. What are you guys using for home protection?

I have both a .40cal USP Hk full size pistol and a Kimber .45ACP compact. Both of these are great choices for home protection. I carry my .45 when I am concealing as my .40 is a bit large unless I am wearing a puffy shirt or jacket. The best choice for home defense may be a 12 gauge shotgun as the worry of shooting thru walls and killing another person in your home or outside of it. As far as the springfield armory weapon, they are known for making some quality pieces. Be sure you at least hold it and ensure it fits in your hand well. Single stack .45 is great if you have smaller hands as I do. Some places may rent that model of gun also. Check around some of the local ranges and see if you can go shoot one...

Good luck..

I've always liked the feel of Springfields in my hand even though I've never actually owned one. I almost bought myself one of their .40 caliber 3" Sub Compacts for Christmas but decided against it since I don't really need another carry piece. I have also entertained the idea of a shotgun but would need to purchase a larger safe which isn't in the budget. The safe I have now has room for a couple more pistols so I'm going to go that direction.

Caswell's in Mesa has a 9mm for rent, they may have other calibers as well.
It's always best to shoot them before you buy them, a double stack .45 is going to be a good size gun.

I have an XD-45.
Let me know if you want to shoot it sometime.

Shotguns and home defense:

They're OK if you get to the BG BEFORE he gets to your family and uses one as a shield, or hostage.

Thanks for the offer Bill. I might just take you up on it. Since you own one, what are your impressions of it?

Very accurate, very reliable, fun to shoot, and for ~$550.00, you are getting about as much gun as an $800.00 - $1000.00 1911.

Out of box accuracy is extremely good. 20 yds + 1 mag = 1 ragged hole.

Double taps as fast as a Glock 19. Going to go shooting in Wickenburg this weekend. Call me if you want to meet up.

I agree, but if your looking for something for concealment I wouldn't get the 45, I'd go for the 40 or 9mm. JMOP
