View Full Version : Poll for this Area of the Forum... Members Only?

Does it make sense to allow this area of the forum to be open to be editted by the public?
Or does it make more sense to close it to be editted only by AZVJC paid members and viewable by the public?
Or does it make even more sense to close it to be editted only by AZVJC paid members and viewable only be AZCJC paid members?
The idea here is that:
1.) By closing editting to only AZVJC members, you keep boneRs and lurkers from posting reviews or responses to reviews without contributing SOMETHING to this forum.
2.) By closing the viewing to only AZVJC members, you keep boneRs and lurkers from benefiting from the reviews posted by other members, and you potentially insulate AZVJC from having possible libel or slander regarding vendors fully available to the public and thus mitigate any legal risk for owning the content.

What think is funny is that, if you read the guidlines, it is clearly stated that this area is NOT to be a F-U fest.
Second, by moving the POR and Max threads, I feel we may sent the wrong message as to the type of content this area should contain.
Third, I absolutely feel that this area should remain public.
Finally, this area may have to moderated.

I must say, I have been dissappointed as of late with the forum.
The recent crap that was stirred up due to the Max4X4 and the POR thread and the handling of that thread does not sit well with me.
My percepion is that the board/forum is slowly becoming a vendors forum. Vendors avatars and their logos are getting bigger and bigger. Now I see adds for Jeeps popping up.
I guess there isn't anything particularly wrong with that, but isn't my cup of java. One of the things that appealed to me the most about the azvjc is the fiesty, independant nature of the club. No dues. everyone welcome, free forum, and kind of a free for all attitude. And that is what Jeep is all about isn't it? Freedom
Bottom line....pay per view or pay to participate goes against what I thought the spirit of this club was all about so I vote no!

I don't think the area will survive if it is not moderated.
An individual's experiences are his own and cannot be argued. They are his reality. You can choose not to believe the individual, that's one's right obviously, and one can argue premises or assumptions upon which conclusions may be drawn. Arguing with the individual to somehow invalidate their experience is nonsense. There should be no name-calling. There should be no harsh or inciting language. The posts should remain dead on topic.
I think it will be tough to get voluntary compliance without moderation.

IMHO when you end listening and start judging you stop learning:eek:
although there will always be buttheads, it is not cause enough to start censoring (am I really a conservative?)
I think the bulk of this club is intelligent enough to recognize (and therefor apply proper attention to ) those who are having extended cerebrial vacations.
by the way, that "senior" member thing is really starting to annoy me...does someone in there enjoy reminding me I'm not 21 anymore:mad:
age discrimination!!!!! I want my liar... I mean lawer!!!!:D

I also think #2. I think that for $15 bucks if someone has a serious enough question for the club they might be willing to pay that just to get an answer to their question, but it also weeds out all of the idiots that are here just to start fights. I appreciated the fact that I was able to come here and lurk when I was a new member, and when the time came for me, I paid my dues, I think the natural progression of someone coming to the site is to first check it out, see what the group is all about, and then if they decide they like the conversations + info being provided, they pay for usage of the site. I understand the high cost associated with running one of these sites, so I say make it member posting only, lurkers should pay to post their thoughts and questions.

Now that's funny!
I voted for number 3. Maybe I am wrong, but I think you should be a paid up member to see that info. As for the vendors, I would like to see the vendor ads in their own forum. What I'm talking about is when a vendor has a jeep for sale, it should be in a vendors for sale forum. There should be a different forum for vendor sales, but if I am looking for something and ask the forum about it, its ok for a vendor to respond to the thread. JMHO :)

Iam kind of on the fence between #2 and #3. I voted for #3 but could be convinced to change it to #2 if some one had a valid argument. I think closing to the public gives people one more reason to join, and helps to stregthen the club in the long run. In a perfect world everything would be free but lets face it you have to pay to play. It cost money to keep this website up and running and I know that I have learned things as well as just enjoyed reading different threads. So I guess I view this as a chance to create incentive for people to pony up a couple of bucks to get what they can't have otherwise.

Problems like the ones you mention below come and go. They happened on the email alias and they certainly will happen here. With upwards of 2,000 active members; it is likely that this is going to happen more and more... our job is to try and stop it quickly.
The vendors contribute substantially to this board by helping me foot the bills AND they support our members. Vendor advertising is fairly limited (mostly in the vendor forum) and you certainly aren't faced wtih large vendor ads on the homepage.
Like you, I'm for keeping this area open to everyone as it really is in everyone's best interest (assuming we can keep it under control). I won't allow this area to become a bash-fest (against the vendors who support the forum OR any other vendor).
Thanks for your comments.

Joe,
Thanks for your reply. I have to say, between your post here and some of Dons, I have a better understanding now.

Lets all bear in mind that by sitting up this new sub forum we are moving into unchartered territory.
What I hope is that those who post do so in a clear and concise way. None of this "they screwed me so don't buy there" stuff. Give legit info of what took place, describe the "screw job". There is always the chance that by airing your feelings it may be resolved.
The principal rule in Artillery School is that you must provide "accurate and timely" fire. Same goes here: Describe what took place accurately and do so in a timely fashion. None of this I stopped by there 3 years ago and got screwed. Unless it has been a repeated thing. I have stopped by there 3 times in the past year and each time this is what took place...
Most of all be civil, calling the guy(s) names won't help.
And for everyone: If the thread is about Joesheet D Ragman's Jeep Repair and Stomach Pump Room and how they failed to provide goods and or services, then don't add a post asking Ziggy Belcher if he wants to go wheeling Sunday. Send him a PM or start another threat.

I have read through all the posts previuos to this, there are many good points made, I personally feel it would be benificial to the club to close editing and leave viewing open. Let the window shoppers look and then decide. #2 is my choice.
