I tried the Airsoft BB tire balance idea on a new set of 33" MT's about 3000 miles ago. My initial results were terrible. I didn't want to post up any comments until I was sure it was the pellets or something else. I had nasty vibes at 45mph and near DW vibes above 65mph. I started off with 8oz in each tire, then 10oz, then 12oz with no change. Last week when I rotated the tires I noticed a change in the vibe and suspected a bent rim. I've been rotating my spare (on a brand new wheel) around since then and today I hit the nail on the head. It was for sure a bent rim. With 12oz in the tires (which is likely way more then necessary) the MTs balance out to 85mph; no bounce, no shimmy. They would probably be smooth beyond 85mph but with no sway bars at all I consider 85 pretty extreme.
:D I am satisfied with the pellets. If anything changes over the next 30K I'll post more...

I've been running them for a while now and all is well. No more lead weights being torn or thrown off on the trail ever again.

Must...bite...tongue...sway...bars...

haha...good stuff

My problem has not been with high speeds but with low. At high speeds (72+ mph) I can run all day so long as the rims aren't too badly bent. It is lower speeds that suck (<60 mph).

How does the setup feel at say 30-45 mph?

I am tired of the sticky tape weights that fall off in thedriveway due to heat, or the metal ones that get peeled off or moved around on the rim on the rocks. Soon I guess wheel balance won't matter but in the meantime a solution would be nice.

That's what I would have thought. Thanks.

Did the tape weights fall off? if so I have some Tony Stewart duct tape that should help out
As in past post about the soft pellets BB's golf balls, sand, Equal ect.
I can balance a square box to zero but it's still not going to drive right

Good point.

Yeah, the weights fell off but I kind of expect them to. They have to withstand a lot of crap I figure -- water, dust, scraping, extreme heat. I have tried duct tape but maybe I am not diligent enough about it. Often the duct tape just comes off too.

Do you have any of those square wheels left? I might do better with them.

The balance job your boys did when I got my last set of new rims from you was amazing. 80 mph to and from the trail that weekend on 37" bias plies -- no problem.

3X - WORKS GOOD (at least for the last 6 months). Heck even after I dug off the wheel weights 3 weeks ago the clowns at the tire shop left on two of the tires

I've heard a lot of good things about these airsoft pellets! When I change up to bigger tires I'll have to throw some inside!!

Timely post as I have been thinking about running these pellets.

I am tired of coming off the trail and having the jeep jumping around after loosing a weight or chunking the tire. I love driving the jeep around town and to work, but I often have to leave it parked until I have time to run to discount for a balance. Having dynamic balancing that changes as your tire changes would be a wonderfull thing and keep me on the road.

I have heard many goood things. But there has got to be a downside....? Does anyone have a friend of a friend story about how the tire blew and took out grandma standing on the side of the road or something.

I have heard/read good, bad and ugly about the "beads" on here and other forums. Ranges to it does not work and will get you killed to the Pope is think it might be a legit miracle and folks are lining up in front of my tires for miles.

I would like to see a legit test by some authority out there on this...

Well one time on my way to BAND CAMP ;) I stopped at an intersection and when all the PELLETS dropped the BUMBS :( on the center island thought it was lose change and all came a rushing in around my HEEP

If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of co-pilot, “Buddy the Dog” , who threw a Scooby Snack out we would have been goners for sure.

Roger you need to get off that night shift, or loose the bottle of Scotch in the desk drawer:rolleyes:

Going to have to check it out the next time we're out, may have to try it on mine. Hate the front shimmy especially when you know its the tires from the last time of spining in the rocks or was it at band camp.

Ive got em and I use them I dont like the fact that I cant seem to get mine to balance above 70+ but I havent been able to add more weight(no time and the guys at the tire place dont like me anymore)...Hey Barry the bent rim thing might be something(It mightve been when we ran upper terminator 2 weeks ago after the 101 run)..Below 60 their invisible to me compared to wheel weights plus nothing to scrape off...

I have had good luck with drivability since going to the aluminum rims. The steelies get bent after a few trips in the rocks. Balance is still an issue losing weights though, which seems to happen every time out. I may have to try the airsofts maybe -- dunno.

Hope you get it sorted out. I am looking forward to the day I don't have to drive this thing on the highway after playing in the rocks.

I put about 14 ozs in my 37s when I had them installed. They ran smooth to 60 mph then @ 65 or above I could'nt stand the wobble, so I had them taken out & got my tires a lifetime balance.

Now I dont care who you think you are, that's funny! :D I'll have to try some of those in my wheels next time. My aluminum wheels are weighing less and less every trip I make to the rocks. I have had them for years and love em. I can run 8 to 10 lbs and they dont spin on the tire. But, their getting pretty badly scratched up.
Where do you get these soft pellets and how much are they a bag?

Ok I have them in my 35's and up to 60mph they are great. What do you do for 60 and up? Add more or what, has anyone found the answer? I only need about 5 to 10 more mph. with my gearing.:D
