I was thinking about buying this thing on ebay and making my own version of a powertank. How much more would I have to invest to get this thing up and running to an actual useful tool?
Does anyone have a write-up with directions and possible costs associated with this?

you could purchase that and then just add a powertank manifold, that way you would have what makes a powertank a powertank, your cost on the manifold part# REG-7000 is 229.99 plus tax.
it comes with the regulators, handle braided hose and fittings

Looks like Mike raised his price a bit but threw in free shipping. $45 to your door. The cheapest I could find when I was looking into it.

Mine uses that regulator setup. Works well. An adjustable regulator is nice but not really necessary for tires. For tools I might want something adjustable. The gauges are nice but also not really necessary. One more set of things to break or go wrong and you can always add them later. I might feel differently if I was using the tank primarily for tools though but even then, gauges with the exception of manifold pressure in an adjustable regulator application are not going to tell you much you don't already know.
Certified Al tank, fixed regulator, a hose, you're good to go.
You can probably buy a recertified Al 20 lb spray painted tank locally for $100. Mine is not pretty but neither is my Jeep. That eBay one is pretty which may suit your needs better, solely your choice obviously.

I have this one in the 10lb size:
http://www.formattfab.com/product_co2_tank.htm
Just needed to buy the hose, quick release, and chuck. and has an adjustable regulator so I can use it with a grinder which has been really nice for when an exhaust gets mangled and stuff.
It was free shipping when I first bought mine a couple years ago but even with shipping its a good deal I think.

If I were to do it again I wouldve gone with the 20 lb tank though.

Totally with you. I did a 20 lb tank from the beginning but already know I would have not liked the 10 lb.
I have used it twice now to reseat beads. Gotta love it.

The Source sells preset regulators for 25 to 40 dollars. These are hi flow non-frezzing type. I have one and it works great. Now you just need a bottle and a hose.
