Hi. Newbee here. I just got my yj a few months ago. It's stock for now. I have had it on a few trails here in AZ since I picked it up but now I'm looking to build it like it should be built. I have put 31's on it only because I killed the Stock 235 Street tires that were there. If you could point me in the right direction on type of lift, rims, skids, engine mods, axles and that sort I would be very happy. I'm wanting to clear 33's and not drage the dirt when I'm out. I would be more then willing to do all the background work myself but seeing how I will be in Iraq in a few months I really don't have the time. Thank you for the help.

If you are willing to spend the money I can show you how to set it up , I have my buddies YJ in the back yard right now sitting on 37's w/ 110" WB .

Dakota you are as bad as me.
I was all set to post a pic of my YJ and suggest he starts here:)

To be honest you can clear 33's with a 3.5 inch kit which is pretty easy to install. I would look into an SYE for the transfer case. The rear axle is the weak point do not spend any money building a D35. You can install a 96? or newer 8.8 out of an Explorer at the junk yard that will pretty much bolt in and has rear disk brakes. It also has the same stock bolt pattern.

BTW the pic I would have posted.

Jeez is that what a guy has to do to get you to be nice and help them? :D :D :D

JeeperCG you would do well to listen to these guys. Hackle has one of the best YJ's around.

Wait a second theres no dent's in that YJ , better not listen to me I have bad habits . Jacks right toss the 35 and go junking 8.8,9inch or if you get lucky even a 44 but not out of a waggy !!! . Not sure about time but this weekend FJ is going to have several buggy/jeep/truggy out there so go out and ask questions from guys that due there own fab work and have tried like me 1/2 dozen times to get what they want out of there rig .

OK... Just kidding. I just don't know if Hackle is the best person to help you out. I took the liberty of circling ALL the stock parts still on his vehicle and, as you can see, there has not been very many modifications.

Another option is to go SOA (spring over axle) using your stock springs. Honestly, you'll probably end up SOA eventually, so why not start that way?

It's a little more involved that slapping on a 3.5" lift kit, but is a great suspension mod.

I started with a 3.5" lift and 33's long ago. Was a good set-up and got me started on learning to wheel. Added some minor lift adders as time went on (1" BL when body mounts needed replaced, 1" motor mount lift, heavy duty shackles 1" longer than stock). Then a front locker. Then a rear locker and lower gears. Then a new rear axle ;-) and a real rear locker (yay detroit!). Then a spring over on new springs. Then 35's. Then 36's and another set of springs to stretch it a bit. And that's where I sit today. Sick, huh????

And that don't include motor rebuild, t-case rebuild, maintenance (crap goes wrong on a 20yr old jeep!), plus all other fab work (cage, bumpers, seats/mounts, winch, etc.)!!!! Money, meet Jeep. Jeep, meet money. You two go well together!

The little D30 has served me through it all, though! With an upgrade to chromo shafts and the bigger u-joints.

Oh...god bless you and keep you safe in Iraq. Thank you for your service.

The attached pic is with the 35's and 1.5" SOA springs. Not quite the latest.

I have a 94 YJ, started with the 4" lift and 33's myself. It just about enough to get me to about half of the fun places, but I'm still wishing now that I would've went SOA. Best part about the YJ and a 4" lift is that you shouldn't really need a SYE or new driveshaft as the vibes weren't that bad, and most lift kits come with some shims and spacers to reduce the vibes if you have any. I had some mild vibes for about the first 3 days, but once the springs kinda settled down a little bit, they went away. I'd say thats your best bet if you're short on cash like I am, but you will eventually want to go bigger and meaner. (thats just the jeeping way) So its more a matter of $$ than anything. Always remember that if you do anything like SOA which is relatively cheap (because you use the stock springs) that mod leads to other necessary mods that aren't cheap = sye + driveshaft. Everything is related and there are very few mods out there that are completely independent of one another.

Ok. So you don't think I am a total retard, I have been Wheeling for most of my life. Granted 27 years is that long in compairsion but it's been a fun ride. I have taken to the hills and trails around Az since I was 13 starting off in a Ford Ranger and going from there. So here's where I plan to be. I still want my daily driver that doesn't eat too much gas on my trips down south so I am planning on staying with 33's for a while. That will be bad enough. Most of the trails I am on now are lots of fun but I have to take to many go arounds (Stock really doesn't like big rocks:( ). As my YJ sits now, I have been down many a trail that I shouldn't have been with a stock anything but it holds up well. I have considered SOA and Coil conversions but really don't have the money. Someone asked me if I had ever thought about air bags. I considered it for a moment untill I descovered that those things are quite expensive once you get into the computer controller. So that's out the window. I think 4 inch's with 33's will get me most places I want to go. Then after a year or two when I get a beter daily driver I will go all out. I thank you all for your posts and I will take all into consideration. Thanks again.
