After shopping around to get my OEM Rubicon front DS rebuilt and being quoted $300 bucks from Precision Driveline I figured I would just pick up some u joints/cv and have Nick and his crew do the rebuild at their shop.
I grabbed a parts list off the ROF forum and provided it to Simon down at 4 wheelers. Simon rounded it the parts in short order and I picked them up and headed up to see Nick and the boys.
I also needed to repair my drivers front TT attachment point from the last time we were in there and we spun the bolt holding the TT. This made pulling the front DS a breeze since we had to drop the TT to repair the bolt.
Nicks crew did a great job installing the OEM bung back in the frame, then pulled the DS and set to work on it. The u joints and CV were all in good shape and most likely would have continued to serve me well. But being as the fornt DS has been in there for 4 years and 54k miles and we have the TT off, why not do some preventive maintenance in the shop rather than repair on the trail...plus I have a week long Moab trip coming up in Sept.:D
In short order all u joints and CV were installed and time for the DS to go in. Oh O we got ourselves a bit o problem. The front u joint was a combo of 1310 and 1350 cross membered u joint. This is the result of the interface from the Dynatrac ProRoc 60 to the OEM DS.
No problem, we call Cole down at 4 wheelers and he has some in stock. We head down to 4 wheelers and they have it, but its different from the one that I have taken out. Simon steps in and calls one of their distributors who has that one in stock. Simon makes arrangements for us to run over there and grab it at the will call counter. Thanks again Simon.:)
We pick it up and head back to POR install the u joint, the DS and then button up the TT and I head home.
Nick and crew did an outstanding job and spent several hours running all over town to sort out the one-of-a-kind u jont...thanks again guys.:)
BUT as all things are in the world of Jeeps all that is well is not always well. I head out then next am to run a few errands and make a scheduled doc appt a bit later in the afternoon.
What I didn't really notice the day before, since I had drove home from POR in rush hour was the first thing I noticed the next day. The dreaded VIBES. Yep, on every take off from a stop, throw some skinny pedal at it and it vibrated like cheap bed with a quarter slot in a sleazy motel. I point the ole Jeep, Cowboy, towards POR. Time I get there I have lost 3 fillings and a bridge it vibes so bad.
Since I have Warn hubs on the front I know it not the front DS, instead its the rear DS, but why? I pull into POR, get out of my rig and give my eyeballs a chance to come to a halt while I talk with Nick. We are both puzzled and go out to look. Sure enough the TT has been replaced and torqued to spec which snugged it up just a hair tighter and closer to the frame. I noticed because I could no longer see daylight between frame and TT. His crew does a good job and does a job good.:D
Even tho Nick and crew are busy I ask if I can get some help on this. Its clearly not thru any fault of theirs. I tell him I have a doc appt downtown and if they could pull the upper adjustable control arms and crank them in 2 complete turns I think it will solve the problem. We all agree and I head out to find a place to eat a bit o lunch while waiting. Before I can take delivery of my Roast Beef Sub Nick drives my Jeep in and gives me the keys.
Big thanks to Nick and crew at POR and Simon and crew at 4 wheelers for all going an extra mile to help me get the shaft.:D
