My opinion (for what it is worth).........

First, my "resume". Between a friend of mine and myself (both of us
with Chevy 350's) we've tried every conceivable combination, and have
come to what we believe is the best solution (although not on my Jeep
yet).

I'll skip all of the in-between stuff and jump to the best solution.
That being to put a 16" fan in front pushing while having a stock fan
behind mounted to the engine (with or without fan shroud). Here are the
reasons. We live in AZ where it regularly reaches 110F or mor in the
summers. The real problem with dual electrics and a fan shroud (one
that covers the entire radiator) is that flow is actually restricted
from going through the radiator at high way speeds. Those engine speeds
need more air flow and the combination of fan shroud and 2 fan motors
blocking the path is enough to make a big difference. The best setup
we've found allows the air to move freely at highway speeds while at the
same time allowing you to force a lot of air through at idle with the
electric/mechanical fans.

Here is the entire set up that we've found works best. Aluminum 2 core
radiator, 16" fan in front pushing, mechanical (hard bladed stock) fan
with no fan shroud. On a 350, we've found middle of summer temperatures
down the freeway not exceeding 185F (thermostat setting) and idling
temps at the same thermostat setting. Have NEVER seen it come above
even in 115F temps or more!

So..........that is what we have found works best. There are other
options that are borderline and can work (like my current setup with
dual 12" electrics and custom made fan shoud), then there is the proven
solution as I described above.

Dan, Sharky
Sounds like you may have found Intimadator. Intimadator follows a wash
that runs off to the west. It follows an old power line that runs along
the north side of the wash. When you come out of Intimadator you
actually follow the line back. In my opinion Intimadator is rated a 5+.
There are also Firebird which is at the end of Taxcollector and then
another bolder strewn wash after Firebird. I am not sure of the that
one. I saw a very built Jeep run this trail with no problem, however it
had 38" or greater tires a spring over shock conversion and rear wheel
steering. Pretty impressive.

CV-style driveshafts address angle problems - not length problems. You should
only spend the cash on a CV if you need it to deal with your angles. Otherwise,
it won't buy you anything.

As for streets, Dick's was on McDowell the last time I went there.

I have a YJ and did a motor mount lift. I just moved the shroud up a
bit. I drilled holes in the brackets on the side where the shroud
fastens to the radiator. Worked fine. I only had to move it about 3/4"
though. I think you do not want to move the shroud too far on the
radiator because then it will loose its effectiveness.

Subject: Trail Report

Hi All:

My friend Chris B. just purchased an '01 TJ about 3
weeks ago and has been dying to take it out ever since
he got it. On Saturday I ran shot gun with him on
FR42 and he did great for being a newby to his TJ.

Today (Sunday) we decided to do a last minute scouting
run up on Table Mesa Road. I recently bought a GPS
III Plus and have had the urge to go out exploring
with it, plus I had the itch to wheel this weekend
after returning from a 5 day trip to CO on Thursday
Evening.

I ended up using the Map Source Roads/Rec Software and
routed a trip to Gillette and back to the air down
spot on Table Mesa. My wife finally let me take her
'01 XJ out as long as she went with and it did pretty
good for only having the stock street tires aired down
to 15 lbs and not being disconnected. I'll admit I
would've flexed more being disconnected. It was a
great 5 mile trip to what's left of the town. Took a
little longer than expected due to the multiple trails
people have decided to make off the main trail. We
finally made it and discovered there are still pieces
of an old building left. There were even some people
panning for gold in the river bed nearby Gillette.
Round trip it took us 2 hours to travel to the town
and back to the air down spot. Got a little off track
in a few places due to the trees being over grown.

From Gillette we headed back towards the air down spot
on Table Mesa. Ran into Rick Norman, Hackle and Randy
(Who?). They were headed up to Upper Terminator with
a guest from Kentucky.

Chris B. and I headed back on Table Mesa and took it
from I-17 over to the Crown King Road. For only being
a 12 mile long trail it took a while. It was rutted
out from the previous monsoon season. I had a little
problem after the river crossings on the one hill
climb. I was flexing out and took a little finesse to
get up and over. It's a totally different driving
style from my TJ to the XJ. Took me quite a while to
get used to taking different lines on the trail. The
XJ is open at both ends like my TJ, but the 4 speed
auto and the I-6 has a lot more torque than my 4
banger.

It took us about 3 hours to complete the run from I-17
to the Crown King Road and we headed south towards the
pay station on the west side of Lake Pleasant. Aired
back up, hit the pavement and headed back down Lake
Pleasant Road through 99th Ave and home to El Mirage.

The wife said I could take the XJ out again, but only
if she's with. I think she's afraid it'll come home
in pieces, but the TJ has yet to come home with any
trail damage =-)

I was thinking of doing a run back to the area next
weekend. I'd like to go from Gillete to Tip Top and
return on another trail. Chris B. is out of town next
weekend. Anyone up for it? Not sure what the trail
is rated from Gillete to Tip Top. I'd rate the trail
to Gillete at no more than a 2.5. Desert Pin Striping
is highly possibly lockers/winches are not needed from
what we had been on today. Drop me an e-mail if your
interested.

Bobberman
