So, how many active mountain bikers are there on this forum? Frenchy and I (well, Frenchy’s out there more than me) enjoy mountain biking and once a year we use to get together with the SoBe Cannondale race team and do an annual ride up in Cottonwood on Jan 1st. Yeah, talk about detoxification.

How about a get together with the AZVJC? Pack them up on the Jeeps, head for, maybe Sedona? A little riding, wheeling, and enjoying the scenery?

What do you think?

Too old and damaged for that much peddeling.... so I bought a 80cc 2cycle bolt on for my diamondback... Paparonbo's does over 30:eek: I'm still recovering from major trail rash when going down hill (power had little to do with it.... it was all Ron's fault!!!!:D )
lotsa fun for $150

I ride, and would be down for a wheeling/riding day. But, it is always easier to wheel with people that you don't know than ride with them. Regardless, I'll give it a try. Sedona would be a good choice too, its close to me :D .

I haven't ridden my mnt bike in quite some time now, I KNOW I would get my arse handed to me if I tried to ride. I just wish I could find the time these days to get back into it.

On some of my wheelin' trips, I've thought about how it would to ride it through on the mnt bike. Some would be cool, some would be down right crazy.

I haven't ridden in a few years, but was planning on starting back up. I'd be interested. Sedona sounds like it would be a great time. Flagstaff has some awesome riding too.

2 bikes an Santacruz Superlite and a S.C. Bullett... I USED to ride ALLOT slowly reduced to once a week, then to once a month .. then to well I haven't been on a bike in over a year............ It's amazing on how much having kids tweaks the lesure time availible.

Now I would ride again..... I live in East Mesa, work in the 'Hood' (24st and Roosevelt)..... MAYBE a 5 minute drive to the Hawes trail system....

I would be interested. I have a Cannondale Jekyl, very nice mountain bike but I haven't ridden much since I bought my Jeep almost a year ago. But I have wanted to go on a combo trip like you suggested. And it sounds like we are all out of shape! :D So, I think we all could get along fine - lots of rest stops to shoot the breeze!

I need to specify that I'm interested as long as this is touted as an "Old Fat Bastage" mountainbike/Jeep trip... I have to build myself back up to the hardcore downhill stuff I used to like to do.

Lots and lots of rest stops. I have a Specialized Stumpjumper, right now it's a dust collector and conversation starter. One of these days.....

Count me in. I've been riding for a few years now. I just picked up this bike almost a year ago, blew out a couple of disks, had back surgery, and have been laid up since. The tires still have the teats on them.:( I think I'm better enough now to ride again. Before it gets too cold I'd like to get a weekend ride in Flag or if we're going to wheel & ride: MOAB baby!:)

I need an excuse to get back on the bike. The pounds have been piling back on .

An overnighter in Sedona would be great!

I have a Giant AC that spent way to much time on the rack behind the jeep this summer. I hauled it all the way to Montana and back, only to ride it once! Worst part is, it had shifted on the rack and the aluminum frame made contact with one of the kids steel bikes. Guess what wears a quicker?

Well....

I guess I can throw my hat into the " old fat bastid that spent too much money on a bike" pile. :D

Seriously though, I would be up for a (EASY) mt bike run in Flag or Sedona.

Wow, great response. How about planning for the end of September in Sedona? Should give us a little time to prepare ourselves and work the cramps out of our legs. Pick a mountain bike trail around Broken Arrow? See if SedonaCowGirl can break away and join in on the fun, maybe lead us on a couple of her favorite trails?

Looks like we will need two groups, old geezers and young bucks. I got a Cannondale Super V SL full suspension. You can tell by the age of the bike what group I belong in:eek:

Well, the hardest part now is to fix a date that will match everyone?s agenda. Keep them coming!

BTW, I'll probably be out of the country on business September 10 to September 25.

I'd be happy to lead some trails on the bikes, or the Jeeps. I've travelled most of the Jeep roads and quite a few of the singletracks around Sedona. I push my Fisher Sugar 2 around Flagstaff most of the year, and usually just head to Sedona for a ride when work takes me there in the cooler months. It is still in the mid 90's in Sedona these days, and into Sept... that's a tad warm for my blood, but probably cool by most of your standards ;) .

Hey, watch your tongue young man. It?s called seniority, post prostate that is. What?s nice about a FS is that when I was younger and riding more often I could stiffen/lock the rear suspension for the fast technical trails. Now, I need all the cushion I can get. If you?re nice I?ll let you take my FS for a spin.;)

Looks like my flight schedule might be changed. I might not make it back until the end of September.:(

BTW, What happened to you yesterday? Thought you'd be wrenching in our driveway.

Now that the serial shooters have been caught i feel somewhat safer riding at night. I usually am too tired to ride in the mornings so i ride late at night. Ive been trying to work on my endurance so that i can really hit some trails and not bonk after a half hour ride.

Hawes is north on power right? Most everyone rides in from the albertsons? How technical is it and would it be a tough ride for someone just gettin into actual trail riding?

Also what kinda gear do you guys use when you ride? Helmets, clothes, hydration? clip ins or not?

I will place myself in the "old fart" column. I used to ride a lot till my bike got ripped. A sweet Rocky Mountain. Anyone have a good full suspension to sell? I'd love to start riding again but can't justify spending $1500.00 + on a good new bike.

yep, its a Reign. I haven't even dropped yet.:) I think a good trail for us in Sedona is the Cathedral Rock Loop. It starts by Bell Rock, big up hill and then a good drop down to Bhudda Beach to scatter the hippies, then easy riding in to Village of Oak Creek.

Your right on the location, you could also park right across the entrance to the trails at the peak of the hill by the canal on Power. It can be pretty rough for a beginning trail ride. Lot's of hills involved.

My gear: Helmet, gloves, glasses, bike shirt and shorts. I clip in, but sometimes like to be platform. 100 oz. Camelback with spare tube, patch kit, mini-tool, pump for tires and one for shocks, knife, and sometimes an energy bar.

Good to know i wouldnt get lost if i said id head out there!

Ive got to get some gear. Tooling around town is one thing but out in the desert is another. we all know that so as most jeep newbs do, ive been trying to get a good feel of what an average rider does and takes.

Any recommendations on a LBS that wont treat a MTB newb rudely or as though im wasting his/her time

I got my bike at Landis Cyclery in north Tempe. They were a great help, let me ride a couple bikes, and then help fit the bike to me. I like to stick with some of the smaller bike shops. I've been to Performance Bikes (formerly SuperGo) but they are about the money, not the customer. Great place to get parts and gear though, plenty of both in stock. I'm not sure who's up there in your side of the town though.

I ride Hawes at least once a week...wish I could get around to the other parts of town, but time is hard to come by. And Hawes is just too nice (and close). Not what I'd call technical, but way, way, way fun and some serious quality single-track. No crowds either.

I've taken my wife out there, and you can ride as fast or slow as you want. She's definitely a beginner. Walks some places, but that's OK.

As for the "hills" out there...not many. And it certainly helps to ride in certain direction to max the downhill. I usually park at Walgreens and ride up thru Las Sendas to the "top" of the trails. Get much climbing out of way on road that way.

Am usually out there early one weekend morning...like 6 or 7AM Sat/Sun. Will lead group if anyone's interested.

Jeff - get off your fat ***** and ride with us again! You too, TBob!! I'll dust my Bullit off if you guys get out there...haven't been on the fat bike in a long while.

Tom

Oh yeah...as for gear:

Helmet, gloves...mandatory. Also consider spare tube mandatory...and a pump if you ride alone (duh!) ;-)

WATER...bring more than a 16oz bottle! Riding is hard work.

When's the trip to MOAB?!?!?! ;-)

Just got done with a Hawes ride this morning...beautiful out there. Little toasty, but slight breeze to keep cool. Met up with a friend I hadn't ridden with in months just as I started...totally unplanned. Took it easy since he was way out of shape...but still fast enough when the trail pointed down.

Had a blast. Will be back out Sunday AM ~7-ish if anyone's interested.

I've been looking for a group to get back in to riding with. I've got a race weight Stumpjumper M2. Its an older bike that I used to race in the MBAA/NORBA series in the mid 90's. I used to run a local team and then rode for Absolute Bikes up in Flagstaff, when I was living there. That said, its been collecting dust since I last took it for a ride in Durango. I need to turn the pedals again and get my legs back in shape. For that matter, I'll need to give the bike a tune up and new inner tubes, too. I'll drag my butt over most anything you throw in front of me, I just need to get myself back into the groove again. I ride an older hardtail and love it. (My rear may be saying something else these days).
Let me know and if I can make it, I'll be up for a ride. I know most the trails around Sedona, Flagstaff, a ton of them around the valley and all of the old race courses that were run around the state. Then again, back when I was training regularly, there weren't subdivisions on a lot of the trails......
Ready to start riding again,
Huck

For a seat....mmm something that keeps your blood flowing down there...no joke:eek:....they make seats that leave space for circulation....anything else and you will most likely have a sore a** which really does not make an enjoyable ride.
