Being as that it will take a while, that means we have plenty of time
to choose our representatives. Perhaps we should have
a "qualifications" day where prospective "warriors" can compete to be
part of the team. I think in order to be successful, applicants need
to:
1. Have a "Team-First" attitude.
2. Have some Mechanical Engineering type knowledge. (Need to have at
least one "genuis" in this area)
3. Have some working Mechanical knowledge, like making a dead engine
run again. (Need to have at least one "genius" in this area, can be
the same "genius" as #2)
4. Have some welding skills.
5. Be reasonable strong and a fast worker. From the looks of it, just
getting the junk out of the pile can be a chore.
I think a weekend (or few) can be set aside to "Test" the applicants.
In the end we should have a team of 4 guys and a couple of alternates
in case someone can't make it.
How about it? Who wants to "Apply?" Who'd like to set up a "test"
environment? Who has some equipment to use for these tests? Things
we'd need might include:
Air Compressor & Air-Tools
Hand Tools (Wrenches, sockets, etc...)
Chop Saw
Cutting Torch/OxyAc Welder
MIG Welder
ARC Welder
(I have an NON-mobile air compressor, a 110v MIG welder, Power Miter
Saw that can double as a Chop Saw, hand tools)
Also could someone with some "Diplomatic" skills draft a letter to
send to the original author of the invitation. Perhaps we could get
moved up the list, since they contacted us first?

Hello All,
Steve Schaefer is leading a Coke Ovens trail run on Thursday, October 27, 2011.
When: Meet at 8:00am at the Texaco in Florence Junction
Where: Florence Junction Area - First we will head up Box Canyon and then on to Martinez Cabins for a quick stop. Then on to the Coke ovens and out to Hwy 177.
Rating: 2.5+
Length: 6-8 Hours
CB Channel: 4
This run will also be with memeber of the Roadrunner 4 Wheelers a ASA4WDC group.
First we will head up Box Canyon and then on to Martinez Cabins for a quick stop. Then on to the Coke ovens and out to Hwy 177.
These are good trails for stock vehicles or people just starting out. they have some rocks to climb but none of them are beyond the means of a stock vehicle.
The Coke Ovens Trail is an all day trip. It covers a lot of different countryside, traveling over and around the rolling hills and traverse some rocks and ledges in the road.
Years ago the Coke Ovens were built to support some of the smelters at the nearby mines. It's a fairly common misconception that they made coke, which is made from coal. However, they were built to make charcoal from the then more plentiful mesquite of the Gila Valley.
Over the years they have been closed to the public numerous times and several have been used as "housing" for the hermits of the hills. At one point (so the story goes) an owner attempted to convert them into a type of tourist resort - and started to make rooms out of them. You can still see the lofts he installed in some of them. This project was never finished.
At this time we are able to see and explore these amazing creations. They are located on the side of a hill along the Gila River and are quite spectacular.
Across the Gila is the old town site of Chochran. If the water is low, there is a river crossing to the west of Chochran that can be taken for an exit out to the Florence-Kelvin Highway
This trail is definitely a favorite for all levels of 4-wheelers. Stock vehicles shouldn't have any problems although clearance is highly recommended. There are several areas of "rock stair steps" that will be a challenge to the novice or stock driver.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Subject: Another ZJ fire
Nope! It wasn't mine! That almost happened in Moab too!
A coworker's wife was driving her 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 somewhere
near Flagstaff on Thursday discovered that the Jeep was going slower and
slower and using more fuel. By the time she pulled off the road it was
too late. The engine compartment was on fire and those dinky fire
extinguishers were not enough to put it out. My guess is that the fuel
pressure valve or an injector started to leak sometime on her trip, but
since the engine was warm she didn't smell anything. The ZJ burned to
the ground. Nobody was hurt. She took pictures as the gas tank caught
fire. I think she will be buying a new WJ shortly.
Anyway, enough for the story. The only time you can really smell a fuel
leak is when the engine is cold. After it warms up, the engine heat is
enough to evaporate the fuel fast enough that you can't smell it unless
you are in the right place at the right time. And by then it might be
too late. If you smell fuel, don't wait 'until the weekend' to fix it.

Subject: LU - Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Plan
Note that the Sonoran Pronghorn recovery area includes Maricopa County.
There is a herd on the Salt River Lakes System (Saquaro, Canyon,
Roosevelt) that was being wiped out by mountain lions as found in a
study earlier this year. I don't know if the depredation hunt was
carried through. If there is recovery area identified in Maricopa County
it could stop 4-wheeling in Bulldog Canyon and around Saquaro Lake. I
suspect the recovery area will grow in size as some of these GAGs start
letter writing campaigns.
Let's keep an eye on this one

DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
Fish and Wildlife Service
Notice of Availability of a Draft Supplement and
Amendment to the
Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Plan--Recovery Criteria and
Estimates of
Time for Recovery Actions--for Review and Comment
AGENCY: Fish and Wildlife Service, Interior.
ACTION: Notice of document availability.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announces
the availability
for public review of a Draft Supplement and Amendment
to the 1998 Final
Sonoran pronghorn (Antilocapra americana sonoriensis)
Recovery Plan.
The species is currently known to occur on federal
lands in Maricopa,
Pima, and Yuma counties in southwestern Arizona. The
Service solicits
review and comment from the public on this Draft
Supplement and
Amendment.
DATES: Comments on the Draft Supplement and Amendment
to the 1998 Final
Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Plan must be received on or
before November
26, 2001 to receive consideration by the Service.
ADDRESSES: Persons wishing to review the Draft
Supplement and Amendment
to the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Plan may
obtain a copy by
accessing the Service's Arizona Ecological Service
Field Office
internet web page at Arizonaes.fws.gov or contacting
John Morgart,
Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service,

mail). Written comments and materials regarding the
supplement and
amendment to the plan should be addressed to the
Refuge Manager, Don
Tiller, at this same address. Comments and materials
received are
available on request for public inspection, by
appointment, during
normal business hours at the above address.
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: John Morgart (see
Addresses).
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
Background
Restoring an endangered or threatened animal or
plant species to
the point where it is again a secure, self-sustaining
member of its
ecosystem is a primary goal of the Service's
endangered species
program. To help guide the recovery effort, the
Service prepares
recovery plans for most of the listed species native
to the United
States. Recovery plans describe actions considered
necessary for
conservation of species, establish criteria for the
recovery levels for
downlisting or delisting them, and estimate time and
cost for
implementing the recovery measures needed.
In a recent court decision (Civil Action No.
99-927 [ESH]), the
judge ruled that the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn
Recovery Plan ``* * *
fails to establish (1) objective measurable criteria
which, when met,
would result in a determination that the pronghorn may
be removed from
the list of endangered species or, if such criteria
are not
practicable, an explanation of that conclusion and (2)
estimates of the
time required to carry out those measures needed to
achieve the plan's
goal and to achieve intermediate steps toward that
goal where
practicable, or, if such estimates are not
practicable, an explanation
of that conclusion.'' The Court has ordered the
Service to reconsider
these portions of the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn
Recovery Plan.
Deadline for completion of this task is November 30,
2001.
The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Act), as
amended (16 U.S.C.
1531 et seq.), requires the development of recovery
plans for listed
species unless such a plan would not promote the
conservation of a
particular species. Section 4(f) of the Act, as
amended in 1988,
requires that public notice and an opportunity for
public review and
[[Page 49036]]
comment be provided during recovery plan development.
Public review and
comment is also sought for this supplement and
amendment to an existing
recovery plan. The Service will consider all
information presented
during a public comment period prior to approval of
the supplement and
amendment to the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery
Plan. The
Service and other Federal agencies will also take
these comments into
account in the course of implementing recovery
activities.
The Draft Supplement and Amendment to the 1998
Final Sonoran
Pronghorn Recovery Plan updates selected biological
sections of the
Recovery Plan, addresses the five listing factors
mandated by Section
4(a)(1) of the Endangered Species Act of 1973,
reassesses recovery
criteria presented in the Final Recovery Plan, and
where practicable,
provides estimates of time necessary to carry out
measures needed to
effect recovery of Sonoran pronghorn as articulated in
the Final
Recovery Plan. The Draft Supplement and Amendment to
the 1998 Final
Recovery Plan was developed by the Service in
coordination with an
appointed Recovery Team that includes a group of
scientists and agency
biologists with expertise in the ecology of the
Sonoran pronghorn. The
Draft Supplement and Amendment to the Recovery Plan
has undergone peer
review by scientists, conservation biologists, range
experts, and
others experienced in reviewing recovery plans. This
Draft Supplement
and Amendment to the Recovery Plan incorporates their
comments where
applicable.
Public Comments Solicited
We solicit written comments on the Draft
Supplement and Amendment
to the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Plan. All
comments
received by the date specified above will be
considered prior to
approval of the plan.
Authority
The authority for this action is Section 4(f) of
the Endangered
Species Act, 16 U.S.C. 1533(f).
Dated: September 13, 2001.
Geoffrey L. Haskett,
Acting Regional Director.

Okay, I found a pair of the factory steps that I was looking for earlier and after receiving 27 (count 'em 27) replies asking why I would want crappy factory steps, the answer is that I don't, they were for a friend. She has a 2001 that is strictly a pavement pounder (drive it to the beach, take the top off once in a while, what's a locker?) Jeep. She doesn't go offroad, care why a Dana 44 is better than a 35, never heard of Currie Enterprises or even want a lift. I know, waste of a perfect Jeep. I am still trying to figure out what was differnt in the frame
between a 2000+ & 1999-97. I don't remember anything sugnificant but,
I haven't really checked that close.
The factory replacement steps I made for mine (1999) fit on Dan S.'s
2000 and were suppose to use the factory mounting spots although
somebody (Mike B.) decided to weld them on.

There are no frame differences in the TJ's (regardless of year). However, I
believe the side steps attach to the tub (not the frame) and maybe those

Well we all showed up for the run only to have the trail leader turn up
missing. It is just as well as all the jeeps that did show up were well
equipped for the trail. We had a good showing of XJ's with Leonard P., Scott
G, one other and I forgot your name sorry. Along with Tom Le's Grand. Steve
S. and myself in YJ's and Dennis in a CJ. We picked up another XJ and a CJ8
at the cabin also. So without Jason showing up we had no TJ's to slow us
down;) (no flames it is a joke). We got started on the run everything went
very well Scott made a very nice showing of driving skill he knows his jeep
very well. Dennis had a few problems but nothing he could not fix. I in
learning how to drive with the new Tera Low ( I love it) went through
everything real well, until I hit the waterfall with the crack up the
center. Doug B. showed me the line on this last winter I must not have paid
enough attention as today I could not get it. I ended up going to the left
to go up the hill with what turned out to be a poor line. Thanks to Tom Le
who hung on to my tire and kept the shiny side up. Of course he did not pull
me down, he held me there for pictures first:) after a quick check of my
shorts I decided on the by pass for today. Tom Le got some nice air going up
the left bank. Steve walked it easy perfect line. We then headed out for the
rest of the trail Tom decided the run was getting boring so he drove into a
washout at one of the switch backs (talk about checking your shorts) wait
till you see the pictures. Scott pulled him back out and we proceeded with
the rest of the trip. When we got to the sluice we decided to checkout the
Luge it has not been used for a long time and is ever more washed out then
before. We all voted and decided on the Sluice ( 7 to 0). During this time
the gentleman in the XJ who's name I can not remember asked about climbing
up the sluice. I answered it was to loose to make the climb up. Well we all
head down and everyone did real well Mr. no name stopped at the bottom and
turned around to try climbing back up after a good try he decided it was not
going to work. We then headed back to the cabin and back to town. I had a
great time leading this trail today nice people (nobody laughed to hard as I
took the bypass) I look forward to meeting you all on a rum again. Thanks to
Jason for not showing up and letting me be trip leader:) Jim F.

Field Office
internet web page at Arizonaes.fws.gov or contacting

supplement and
amendment to the plan should be addressed to the
Refuge Manager, Don
Tiller, at this same address. Comments and materials
received are
available on request for public inspection, by
appointment, during
normal business hours at the above address.
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: John Morgart (see
Addresses).
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
Background
Restoring an endangered or threatened animal or
plant species to
the point where it is again a secure, self-sustaining
member of its
ecosystem is a primary goal of the Service's
endangered species
program. To help guide the recovery effort, the
Service prepares
recovery plans for most of the listed species native
to the United
States. Recovery plans describe actions considered
necessary for
conservation of species, establish criteria for the
recovery levels for
downlisting or delisting them, and estimate time and
cost for
implementing the recovery measures needed.
In a recent court decision (Civil Action No.
99-927 [ESH]), the
judge ruled that the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn
Recovery Plan ``* * *
fails to establish (1) objective measurable criteria
which, when met,
would result in a determination that the pronghorn may
be removed from
the list of endangered species or, if such criteria
are not
practicable, an explanation of that conclusion and (2)
estimates of the
time required to carry out those measures needed to
achieve the plan's
goal and to achieve intermediate steps toward that
goal where
practicable, or, if such estimates are not
practicable, an explanation
of that conclusion.'' The Court has ordered the
Service to reconsider
these portions of the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn
Recovery Plan.
Deadline for completion of this task is November 30,
2001.
The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Act), as
amended (16 U.S.C.
1531 et seq.), requires the development of recovery
plans for listed
species unless such a plan would not promote the
conservation of a
particular species. Section 4(f) of the Act, as
amended in 1988,
requires that public notice and an opportunity for
public review and
[[Page 49036]]
comment be provided during recovery plan development.
Public review and
comment is also sought for this supplement and
amendment to an existing
recovery plan. The Service will consider all
information presented
during a public comment period prior to approval of
the supplement and
amendment to the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery
Plan. The
Service and other Federal agencies will also take
these comments into
account in the course of implementing recovery
activities.
The Draft Supplement and Amendment to the 1998
Final Sonoran
Pronghorn Recovery Plan updates selected biological
sections of the
Recovery Plan, addresses the five listing factors
mandated by Section
4(a)(1) of the Endangered Species Act of 1973,
reassesses recovery
criteria presented in the Final Recovery Plan, and
where practicable,
provides estimates of time necessary to carry out
measures needed to
effect recovery of Sonoran pronghorn as articulated in
the Final
Recovery Plan. The Draft Supplement and Amendment to
the 1998 Final
Recovery Plan was developed by the Service in
coordination with an
appointed Recovery Team that includes a group of
scientists and agency
biologists with expertise in the ecology of the
Sonoran pronghorn. The
Draft Supplement and Amendment to the Recovery Plan
has undergone peer
review by scientists, conservation biologists, range
experts, and
others experienced in reviewing recovery plans. This
Draft Supplement
and Amendment to the Recovery Plan incorporates their
comments where
applicable.
Public Comments Solicited
We solicit written comments on the Draft
Supplement and Amendment
to the 1998 Final Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Plan. All
comments
received by the date specified above will be
considered prior to
approval of the plan.
Authority
The authority for this action is Section 4(f) of
the Endangered
Species Act, 16 U.S.C. 1533(f).
Dated: September 13, 2001.

Just so everybody knows, my factory steps were gone real quick and have been collecting dust in the garage ever since but they won't fit a 2000 or later due to the frame change.

Sorry for the late notice. If anyone in the
Valley wants to wheel late this afternoon,
Blake Van de Loo and I are going out to the
White Tanks.
Just got my traction bar built and we need
to test it out.
We're probably gonna run Tax Collector and
Firebird. You'll need 33s (I've seen 32s
make it with good driving) and a traction
device.
We're meeting at Love's truck stop at 4
p.m., to be on the trails by 5. Love's is on
Miller Road and I-10 out west of Phoenix.
If you want to come, come on out. We'll be
there at 4 trailering our junk. If you need
to get in touch with me, e-mail
amstaff@e... or call
480.460.0399.

Added a 4" lift and it will no longer fit in the garage. Need to take off the bar. Would consider selling lights only...make an offer

Does anyone know how to bypass the YJ headlight switch so I could run
my factory fogs w/o the headlights being on?

Great run today at Martinez Canyon. Had a blast especially since this
was my first time completing a 4.0+ trail. The other times we've turned
back for one reason or another. Sorry about taking of at the end but
since I live in Chandler it is quicker for me to out through box canyon
rather than going up to Florence Junction. Can't wait to see the
pictures everyone took.

There are no frame differences in the TJ's (regardless of year). However, I
believe the side steps attach to the tub (not the frame) and maybe those
connection points changed.

Thanks to all the folks we met on Broken Arrow today! One of the nicest days four wheeling Diane and I have had in a long time. We were running late due to a road construction project between the Rim and Camp Verde, but after the first obstacle we ran into Brian and Keith playing in a hole. Ha Ha. Had trouble all day keeping That trick XJ out of cracks. Lets do it again soon!

PS Nice looking Jeeps Keith and Scott have!
Up on the Mogollon Rim in God and Four Wheeler's country.
