A great movie, rent it if you haven't seen it. That said it serves as the prelude for this discussion:

SITUATION:
The sheet has hit the fan, economic collapse, US over run by commies, Rusky's, little Chinamen and a whole lot of folks that want to kill a lot of us off, nuke have been exploded in NYC, Chicago, Wash DC and several other major cities in the US.

Last words from our government were for all to be prepared to live off the land, support your families and await further instructions.

Be prepared to engage the enemies from a defensive posture if need be. Do not conduct offensive operations.

Access to cities, food stuffs, tools, weapons and munitions will be limited at best.

Move out ASAP!

*******************

Your Jeep is ready to go and you have always given things like this some thought so your well prepared to head out into the sticks and hide out for awhile.

Only discuss what guns, pistol/rifle/shotgun do you take with you, in what calibers/gauge and why?

1) 1-Ruger 10/22, SS
Kill small game, quiet, effective

2) 1- Bushmaster A2 carbine, .223
Mil Spec combat rifle 30 rd clips and ammo should be easy to find

3) 1- Ruger Ranch Rifle, SS, .223
Medium sized game [deer], same ammo as # 3 above, backup for # 3

4) 1- Ruger Deerfield Rifle, 44 Rem Mag
Close combat, and game acquisition

5) 1- S&W Mdl 629, SS, 44 Rem Mab
Shares ammo with #4, close combat, last stand

6) 4- Beretta Mdl 92, 9mm
Family weapon, concealed carry, placed in various spots as to always be accessible, common ammo, 15 rd combat clips, depth of reserves in the event of possible loss

7) 1-Colt 1911, SS 45 ACP
Family weapon, ammo available, last stand

My Objectives:

1) Ammo needs to be common, thus easily available and likely to be used by majority of defenders [2, 3, 6, 7]

2) Ammo needs to be shared to the maximum across your weapons group [2 - 3 and 4 - 5]

3) Ammo/weapons need to be multipurpose with the ability to be used in various situations [small game-large game, 1, 2, 3, 6]

4) Ammo/weapons should have some degree of redundancy and possible barter use, in keeping with: "Guns and ammo, currency of the 21st Century" [1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

Slight variation in weapons (don't feel comfortable posting all on an open forum) and plenty of ammo.

"Bug out" Bag

a lot of other stuff necessary to survive without Safeway etc

Crossbow, quiet so I don't give up my position when hunting game or man.

Black powder type small arms and rifles for ability to make my own reloads when noise is not an issue. Lathe to construct and repair same.

Books on home made land mines and bombs.

Books on how to raise and store food, animal and vegatable. How to make biodiesel and ethanol as well as synthetic oils. Oh, home brew and whiskey too.

Already know how to build a house and a car.

GPS for where it is all buried in the desert presently.

A bow and my trusty 870 12ga. with lots of amo. Bird shot, 00 buck, slugs it's more than capable of taking down any North American game And my 30-06 to reach out and touch you kinda feel.:D

Then hit the local sporting goods store or general store like they did in Red Dawn. BTW a great movie!:D

This is all hypothetical and not to imply what you might own and its focus is only on what guns you would carry if you found yourself in that position someday.

I posted this a couple of years ago on our gun forum and the discussion lasted nearly 6 months.

Interesting film, I enjoyed it in my youth. To be honest, I have always been fond of the apocalyptic genre in film.

I am an avid backpacker, and already have plenty of equipment to handle long treks. Of that equipment, is my field washable water purifier. Best $100 I have ever spent.

I guess I would just get lsot in the woods with the arms I own. Out of sight, out of mind would be my strategy.

Beside the arsenal, I would stock up on night vision, sentry electronics, and, if funds permitted, a nice little stinger missile system (yeah, nice, I used to build IFF for them;) ).

Granted, I had to sell my baby... my beautiful (in my eyes) AR-15...so for sake of conversation, let's pretend I still have it...

Still have plenty of supplies in the form of freeze dried food and gear from my SnR days and bachelor camping.

I'd keep it simple..
My AR for self-defense/self-offense and for food.. It drills 300 yrds like a 'Vette cruises 60.

My trusty .22 Mariln tube fed rifle. Weapon for the wife, or when I need to shoot small game and I dont want to everyone with in 3 miles to know where I am.

My Glock 17. Personal side arm and my best freind. Would be my Oh Sh#$ weapon. Everything else, I would pick up here and there.

Well, I guess I'd take my scoped 03 springfield for the reach out and touch. Then my custom by me plastic adorned, shortened, relieved, smoothed and reliable SKS. Then my .22 bolt action and Model 12 shotgun.
To top it all off, my Colt King Cobra with accurized 6" barrel (.357) and my trusty carry every where Model 1911 converted to 1911A1 in .45 super ACP with 7" slide and 8" barrel. Also available my early Ruger, (not Super blackhawk) .44 mag with 7 1/2" barrel. All with my special loads worked up over the years of shooting that I have done. I would head out for my "Special cave" located within 15 minutes driving time from my home, where I have over a years supply of food and "essentials" stashed. So long cruel world! And be sure you dont F*** with me!:)

I think I'd grab about a dozen strippers from Scottsdale; after a week in the woods they'd be ready to kill anything withing 10 miles of base camp.

10-22 - as many rounds as I could find, usually keep around 1000 all the time
12 Gauge with light and heavy loads
.303, because I still have about a 1000 rounds of it as well and it shoots dead on.
As many handguns as I could carry.

A good knife.
Something for making fire.
Some strong booze.

We had a topic like this many years ago on the yahoo list. The difference was, where would you go? I think I would head out to cherry creek trail or red creek up by the verde. Both are very remote and not easy to get to, have water and game and not generally known areas.

Cool! I run a B&K AVR 305 receiver, Samsung plasma, Sony 999ES DVD/CD into Martin Logans and Velodyne sub. My real passion is two channel listening though. I use an integrated tube amplifier for that. If I wasn't spending it on the Jeep; I'd be spending it on the stereo. :D

Any how back to the topic there is a real good list of thingst to bring if the chit hits the fan!

I am amazed at what some of you would carry in the way of weapons.

Someone brought up, "where would you go"? Arizona is a good if not great place, BUT my fear is that it would be over run by folks, just for that reason. I would look hard at:

Utah
Mississippi-Louisiana-Arkansas
Oklahoma

All these areas/states have small populations, good weather and are away from major population areas.

New Mexico is the place you ougta be,
I have a piece of dirt outside sante fe, actually been in family for a very long time has a mine and well on it, I go over maybe once a year, nice place to hide out,
Just have to be able to get there.
WIth the freeways like they are here, it could be a lifetime getting to fountain hills. ha
anyway, thats why I am learning to fly, its easy to hotwire a plane, and the small guys can fly low and slow.
Plan on scavenging, might not have time to put a protection package together, unless you have a "bug out bag", good idea, just getting to it is the hard part.
Hey remember be flexible in your moves, plan and adjust and overcome, the way of survival. If not they'll be seeing you on the other side.

I think alot of this question would have to with where the invasion occurred. In the movie, the Reds came here by useing Cuba as a jump off point, (hence so many Cubans in the movie). They landed in the midwest to caputre the nuke sights, (I am guessing), and came up through the south from Cuba. If they took the east coast, chances are, I'd stay right at my house. If they came via west coast, the family would be packed up in the RV heading east and I would still be here waiting unitl I knew where to go.

All though in todays world, the only country I can see actually pulling off an invasion would be China, pack all the soliders into containers, land in port and  wham unload and own a huge beach before we even knew how to react. Germany did exact same thing to Norway and Denmark in the early days of WW2.

And hopefully the occupying force has seen "Deliverance" and wont go into the southern areas like that:D . Maybe one of those mini guns(like the ones hanging off the side of a Blackhawk) you posted on another thread! Don

You can tell this is wishfull thinking when we start talking about invasion. In fact no country today or tomorrow will ever be in a position to invade the US. Instead what we will have is a repeat of WWII where we are nuked and hopefully we will coincide. [ As a sidebar: Der Klinton upon taking office changed our military policy from "Mutually Assured Destruction" or MAD, in the military its known as Scorched Earth. Bush changed it back. This is not a political discussion, just thought you might want to know this. ]

Our decision to nuke Japan was based upon our estimate of needing at least 100k men to hit the beach in Japan and losing most of them. All total it was to be nearly a Million man exercise with massive losses. I suspect that Japan surrendered due to the fact that at that time Japan had taken massive losses and were being pushed back to the mainland. Had it occurred early in the war I think Japan would have continued to fight.

Whether or not we as a country will have the will to fight, depends upon our near term future as a country. Expect us to be nuked first then invaded. If that occurs expect the invasion to come on both coasts concurrently.

Believe me it took many years to find just the right one too.

The .45 super acp is a invention of my own that I havent built yet. I'd use .45 Winchester magnum brass cut down for a special barrel that Stone told me they could build and install on a .45 auto frame. .45 ACP 185grn JHP at about 1400 to 1550 fps out of an 8" barrel. Good for hunting!
