Yes, we cam all the way thru the canyon. If it is the obstacle I am thinking of, you don't take it square on. You put the left tire on the left wall (when heading south) and right tire on the rock.

I made it to Texaco on time, but must have been to anxious to go cause when I saw all the Jeeps taking off, me and a friend jumped in line and went with them.
OOps!
I guess I should have located Joe W and stuck with him, cause we ended up in the Woodpecker group. I am not setup for Woodpecker and my friend was in a stock 4-Runner. We decided to head south down Box canyon and thought we might meet up with the group coming up.
We still had alot of fun and I was suprised that we could get the 4-Runner over all the obstacles coming into the canyon with just a few scrapes to the skid area between the IFS & trailer hitch (Viva live axles!). We were stopped eventually by the big boulder in the tight northern section of Box canyon. The drop off would have hung up my XJ, and just forget the 4-runner.
Did the real Box Canyon group come over this obstacle, or was the run mostly in the southern part of the canyon?
Guess I'll know better next time..

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - South End White Tanks Area - Saturday, September 22, 2001
Hello All,
Michael Chatfield lead a trail run Saturday, September 22, 2001 across South End White Tanks Area
Well, we ended up going over a little more difficult terrain than planned, but still really nothing more than a 3.0.
Two Grand Cherokee's (Larry and Matt), a Cherokee (Joe? &; passendger, Mike), a TJ (Jim) and myself (CJ) were all that showed; we headed over to the sand hills and aired down, played for a bit and then took off toward the mountain. We took off up a side wash that at first was realatively mild. There was a few obstacles; one that was pretty narrow which required a little extra care getting the Cherokee's by the rock wall. Another obstacle was way to narrow for the Cherokee's, but the by-pass proved to be interesting as well.
Eventually, the trail became a bit more than expected (3.5+), so we decided to turn around and go back. Along the way, Matt's GC tie rod encountered a rock, which broke the tie rod tube near the end. By use of Cell Phone, a part was located; so we all headed out with Matt riding along in the other GC.
Matt &; Larry headed off to get the part; Jim gave them his number so that he could join them on the trip back out to repair Matt's GC.
Thanks everyone for coming out.
Anyone interested in running the rest of this wash? Looks like a 3.5/4.0 starts off of the main wash and ends up near Monster Hill.

I am looking to put a "trunk" in the cargo section of my TJ. I really don't want to remove the back seat permanantly, but it seems as though I will have to if I want to gain the space. I am looking for information, I guess, from anyone who may be using some of the modular storage products that are out there, such as TUFFY products. They just don't seem to provide enough storage above the wheel wells and behind the rear seat when compared to the full cargo trunk that TUFFY offers, also. Any ideas?

There is a line between storage and security. I have some cargo
boxes from the army store that I can put in and out of the jeep
within a few minutes, but they are not bolted down, so don't provide
much security. Ammo boxes are great, usually waterproof as well. I
figure if they are good enough to carry ammunition, they are
sufficient for tools and parts.

There's no real answer to this question. It all depends on what your
comfortable with, or what kind of performance you expect out of your
Jeep. Also, it depends on what engine/tranny combo you're running
with.
That said, I've got a '99 TJ that's my daily driver. I'm running with
over 4.5" of lift and 35" GY MT/Rs. I've also got 4.56s. Everything
is great as far as I'm concerned. Putting in the new gears really
made a difference over the 3.73s I had before.
If you're looking to go with 4.5" of lift, and the 35" tires, I'd say
your best bets are either 4.10s, 4.56s or even 4.88s. The best (and
probably most popular) choice are the 4.56s. But, like I said, it all
depends on what engine/tranny combo you're running as well.
By the way, my 3.73s are for sale if anyone's interested :)

manual or automatic. for a manual 3.70 are cuttin' it close you probably wont use 5th gear any more. even with 33s. so you can imagin what 35s will be like. I am assuming you have the 6 cyl. You will want to regear to 4.56 gears eventually (that is depending on your driving habits. trail or road).
But this is where you need to start planning you path of upgrades. Tires are connected to the axel, axel connected to the locker, locker connected to the ring and pinion, R and P connected to the drive shaft etc I think that is how the song goes.
not sure about with auto.
just my humble opinion.

Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Saturday, September 29, 2001 - Reminder
Hello All,
Jason LaLiberty is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, September 29, 2001.
When: 8:00am
Where: Meet at the turn to Florence off 60.
Rating: 4.0+
Length: 6-8 hours
CB Channel: 4
Never run this trail before, but would like to try it.
Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.
Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.
The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.
A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.
As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.
The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"
This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

225/75r15s. Or whatever tires the vehicle was originally sold with. I
hate to be a party pooper, but DC-Jeep used those sized tires for a
reason. The reason being reduction in roll-overs which means fewer
lawsuits and cheaper insurance for the buyers of the vehicles.
> B. What gear ratio should I go with if changed?
It depends on the tire size and if you care about performance. Here's a
couple of handy formulae.
new_ratio = (new_tire_size/old_tire_size) * current_ratio
rpm = (mph * gear_ratio * 336) / tire_diameter

Yeah, it's cheesy, but it works.
If you replace your slave with an internal slave, make sure you use a
good name brand or even OEM. I've heard too many stories about lesser
brands continuing to leak. I got a new Bendix unit from AMC 4x4 Salvage
for much less than what the Jeep dealer wanted.
As for the conversion to an external slave, here's some info that I got
off the internet:
For this swap you need the following stuff:
new clutch and pressure plate
factory bellhousing from a '94-up AX-15 equipped Wrangler or Cherokee
Factory slave cylinder
clutch pivot arm
I'm not sure about the Master Cyliner Your best bet is to look in a 4WD
Hardware catalog and compare the part numbers from a '91-'93 Jeep to a
'94-'99 Jeep.
You can source these parts from any wrecked Cherokee or Wrangler.

NOW YOU TELL ME... No just kidding I tried that and it did not work. I
thought it might have something to do with it coming off or staying on.
I just did not know how it worked. I seems that sleve you mention is too
short ot make a difference. I am going to try to see of a longer
something will work to get it off. Although I have already cut it.
As for AMC I just called them about a rebuilt tranny and they want 750.
a swap to the external will be 65 more. But that only includes the bell
housing and fork. I have to come up with the master/slave H-line and
throw out bearing. WAY too much for my small budget. I went that way
because the 5th gear is shot as well. That may have to wait (I don't use
5th any way).
Checked with AMC and they want 89 bucks and offer no discount. Unless
you're a frequent customer. I am going to check around a bit. And if
someone can pick this up at AMC cheeper would you let me know?

Joey,
I think you'll find that $89 is about as cheap as it gets.
Dave down at AMC is fully aware of the amount of effort it
takes to replace the slave cylinder and he's also heard
about the problems with cheaper brands. That's why he
sells Bendix. (At least he did when I bought mine.)
Dealerships want $130-$150 for the slave cylinder if I
remember correctly.

Hello All,
Jason LaLiberty is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, September 29, 2001.

Here's a
couple of handy formulae.
new_ratio = (new_tire_size/old_tire_size) * current_ratio
rpm = (mph * gear_ratio * 336) / tire_diameter

Joey, that connector is *not* a one-time fitting - you slide that moveable

I agree with Brent in that there is no best answer - except for Linda's.
That said, it's my opinion that 33's make for a good tire size for a
daily driver. And 4.56 gears complement those 33's real well. I say
all this as the driver of a 6-banger.

My old 94 YJ used a 1 piece Lucas plastic Master, Line & slave. they are

one sucks (but at least it's easy to change).

thought it might have something to do with it coming off or staying on.

Thank you all for the input. Looks like I'll have to tell the wife to add another $300. She is going to love that.

I agree with Brent in that there is no best answer - except for Linda's.
That said, it's my opinion that 33's make for a good tire size for a
daily driver. And 4.56 gears complement those 33's real well. I say
all this as the driver of a 6-banger.
