Members of AzVJC,

As some might have heard the associated students of ASU have voted to not
fly the flag in the Memorial Union of ASU. The associated students felt that
this might offend some people. Although the students made this vote the
President of ASU, Lattie Coor has not stepped in on the side of the US and
demanded that the flag be flown, as he could do.
I am asking that everyone email Mr. Coor and ask/demand that he steps in.

Please be respectful of his position but, put pressure on him as Arizona and

It is a shame that this country's own flag has become such a
controversy in the past few days. And to me it is even more shameful
that ASU is now a part of this controversy. The flag stands for
Freedom and the millions of Americans that gave up everything to
defend it. It does not, as some suggest, represent oppression.

Today we mourn the passing of an old friend, by the name of Common
Sense.

Common Sense lived a long life but died from heart failure on the
brink of the millennium. No one really knows how old he was since his
birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He
selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, homes,
factories and offices, helping folks get jobs done without fanfare
and foolishness.

For decades, petty rules, silly laws and frivolous lawsuits held no
power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued
lessons as to know when to come in out of the rain, the early bird
gets the worm, and life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by
simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn),
reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the
kids), and it's okay to come in second.

A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the
Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and
educational trends including body piercing, whole language and "new
math." But his health declined when he became infected with the "If-
it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus. In recent decades his
waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing
regulations.

He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking
lawyers. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly
implemented zero tolerance policies, reports of six-year-old boys
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen
suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher
fired for reprimanding an unruly student. It declined even further
when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a
student but cannot inform the parent when the female student is
pregnant or wants an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments
became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received
better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses
in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports. Finally a woman
who was stupid enough not to realize that coffee is hot and was
awarded a huge payoff caused Common Sense to finally throw in the
towel. As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic
but was kept informed of developments, regarding questionable
regulations for asbestos, low flow toilets, bicycle helmets and
mandatory air bags.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust;
his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son,
Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers: My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

I AM THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

I am the flag of the United States of America. My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings. I stand watch in America's
halls of justice. I fly majestically over institutions of learning. I
stand guard with power in the world. Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice. I stand for freedom. I
am confident. I am arrogant. I am proud.

When I am flown with my fellow banners, my head is a little higher,
my colors a little truer.

I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world. I am worshipped - I am saluted. I
am loved - I am revered. I am respected - and I am feared.

I have fought in every battle of every war for more than 200 years.

I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Appomattox. I was
there at San Juan Hill, the trenches of France, in the Argonne
Forest, Anzio, Rome, and the beaches of Normandy, Guam, Okinawa,
Korea and KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam know me; I was there.

I led my troops, I was dirty, battle-worn and tired, but my soldiers
cheered me And I was proud.

I have been burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries I
have helped set free. It does not hurt, for I am invincible.

I have been soiled upon, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of
my country.

And when it's by those whom I've served in battle - it hurts. But I
shall overcome - for I am strong.

I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stood watch over the uncharted
frontiers of space from my vantage-point on the moon.

I have borne silent witness to all of America's finest hours. But my
finest hours are yet to come.

When I am torn into strips and used as bandages for my wounded
comrades on the battlefield, when I am flown at half-mast to honor my
soldier, or when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving parent at
the grave of their fallen son or daughter, I am proud.

MY NAME IS OLD GLORY LONG MAY I WAVE. DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN..LONG MAY I
WAVE.

I agree a vote is a vote. The flip side to that is what are they
doing in our country if they don't like it enough to fly the flag?

I have had it up to hear with people complaining about America, if you
don't like it leave it. I personally see it as an insult to not fly
the flag and in light of what has happened(the personal attack on us
all) I find it more appauling. What was going through their heads?
This is total disrespect for the country and those whose lives were
lost last week.

If you love the country, why would you not fly the flag? If you want
to be here and are proud would you not want to show it?

Yes a vote is a vote, but it really scares me to work down the street
from them, I know another 19 or so that would not fly the flag too and
look what they did.

This was no way intended to offend anyone nor disrespect anyone. If
you want email my account and I will respond(when it comes up),
let's not take up everyone's bandwidth if you disagree with me.

Dear Mr. Coor,

My name is Roger Tomas and I am an alumni of A.S.U. I've recently heard
about a decision not to fly the American flag on the A.S.U. campus due
to the possibility that certain people may be offended. This is an
outrage. It is an embarassment to our country and an insult to those
who have fought for our freedoms - especially to those who have made
the ultimate sacrifice. It is also an insult to the victims of the
recent terrorist attacks. We are currently in a period of mourning
and flags are to be flown at half-mast in memorium to those victims.

If what I've heard is incorrect and my comments are unwarranted, please
accept my apology. Otherwise, I ask that you please correct this wrong.

Thank you.

Excellent articles, Mike. If we are not willing to fly our flag
because we might offend someone, then we have already given up
at least one freedom and we've already started to lose the battle.

Hi Ben,

Technically, whenever you're on BLM land you're supposed to have a permit. Box Canyon is on BLM land. I purchased permits for two years in a row from the BLM office in Phoenix. It costs $20.00 a year. I've been on BLM land alot including Box Canyon and have never been stopped by anyone. I did not renew my permit this year. If I get stopped I'll just play dumb.

A word of caution tho, if you ever go off roading on the Indian reservations you will need to get a permit from the tribe whose land you're going to travel on. Again, I've never been stopped on reservation land but several people told me better safe than sorry when on their land.

Re-newing your permit is not only to be on the land legally but to also

AJ Card,
I respectfully disagree. BLM and State Trust Land are two different
departments. BLM is an agency within the U.S. Department of Interior.
State Trust Land is managed by Arizona.

I unfortunatly do not know what the money from the sale of STL permits
go. I believe it goes into maintaining those lands for our use. Just
because everyone is doing 75 in a 65 does not make it right. A while
back it was brought up by the "greenies" that there are only small
amount of people using the land [legally]. They were noting the number
of permits issued.

Where do you get permits for traveling offroad on Reservation land? Is
there a central office downtown or do you have to go to the particular
Res for it?

I got my pads at West Coast Racing Supply, they are foam pads and they have a wide variety of colors. If you go there tell them I sent you and mention the club and you will get them for $1.50 for 3ft. instead of $4.99-$5.99 that everyone else sells them for.
