I just want to thank everyone who was willing to help me hook up my soundbar. When I had my CD player installed earlier today, I was just talking with the service man and he just went ahead and hooked it up for me. The only thing he charged me was for the wire ($5). You guys are all great! Beware though, as I get the money for more upgrades, I'll be needing help:-)

Now that my Front D44 is in (well almost), I am
thinking about beefing up the rear of my CJ. With all
of the discussion of the Ford 8.8 rear axle, that is
one of my considerations. I have a couple of
questions on it though.

How does it compare strength wise to a D44?
Are lockers available for it?
Can you get high strength shafts with a 5 on 5.5
pattern?

I saw a Jeep a year or so ago that had been converted to Propane.
It works the same way as having an engine with fuel injection. No
more flooding on steep hills or off camber stuff. I work for a
Propane company and have thought about converting my Jeep just to
save on fuel costs. But I am not ready to give up my back seat yet
for a tank. So instead I will just convert my truck and hope that I
don't get shot for having alternative fuel plates on it.

Subject: Longer Shocks???

I have a 97 TJ with a R/E 4.5" lift that was really 5" of lift.
Here is my question, where can I get longer shocks for it? I have
blown out the drivers side front shock twice now. I have also done a
lot of trimming on different brackets to get more flex. Which by the
way has worked quite well except for the shock thing. Can any one
help me out on this one. I live up here in the White Mountains so
there are few if any experts to talk to about this problem.

Thank you, Thane

Full-width axles are just plain BAD-***! There is a lot smaller
chance of breaking stuff, and the only trail I can think of that
would be impossible with full widths is Spare Tire Canyon. If you
want my opinion on the best axle swap for 35" tires on a Jeep, go
with 4-door wagoneer axles. D44 front and HD AMC 20 rear, already
with 1-pc axles and a stronger housing.

Subject: Re: Ford 8.8

If you plan on using a Detroit, the lowest gear that Tractech says
their Detroit is for in an 8.8 is 4.56. I think Dion said it was
related to the gears not meshing properly. But I think you can do a
Lockright with about any gear ratio, but not sure. Other than that,
the only drawbacks to the 8.8 are that it's a c-clip [like a speed-
bump dragging TJ =) ] BUT they are notoriously stronger than a D35C
and from what I've read and seen that it usually isn't an issue.

It was a high candidate for my swap, but since I would be at 5 on 5.5
in the front in the future, I decided to go with a 9". Plus it's a
non c-clip (I'm sick of them already with my TJ), semi-floating
(which I assume would be easier to change axle shafts, it only takes
4 bolts and it's out.) Plus if you want you can get a high-pinion 9"
for driveshaft angle help (but then you have an 8.8 ring gear).
There is also no Detroit gear ratio limitation, according to Tractech.

I have no data for comparision, but I would think a 5 on 5.5 pattern
would be stronger than a 5 on 4.5, so for your CJ you would be
possibly downgrading in that dept. right?

From a cost perspective your probably at about the same, considering
that with the 9" you could use the stock axleshafts but with the 8.8
you'd need to have them re-drilled (if possible, and you would need
another set if you wanted spares) or get new ones; but if you can
find an 8.8 with the gear ratio you already have (not sure what that
is), you wouldn't have to regear.

There are pros and cons to both, but also from what I've heard if you
weld the tubes on an AMC 20 you've beefed it up to the equivilant to
a D44 (assuming you have a 20 in your CJ). I have no data on this,
but have heard of it, including on this board.

Probably the easiest way is to look at the fill plug. If it's rubber, than
you have the D35C. If it's a metal "bolt" like plug, it's a D44.

Hey Joe - I was a federally licensed firearms dealer for many years and the
law in AZ is if it is in a holster you can keep it just about anywhere you
want. Your glove box, center consol, under your seat, etc. One major thing
to know is if you get pulled over by the police the first thing you need to
do is tell him you have a firearm in you vehicle. He will ask you for it and
after he is has finished his business with you he will return it.

Handgun.

I suspect, like many Americans; I was pushed over the top by the latest
round of violence. While I don't yet know if I will ever carry concealed, I
am taking a conceal carry class next week. I figure the training will be
good since it has been almost 30 years since I had formal training on a .45
caliber handgun. The idiot who killed the owner of my favorite gas station
last week was the straw that broke the camels back...

Jeep content: Those of you who have handguns, where do you carry them when
you are in your Jeep? It is my understanding that as long as they are in a
holster, you can carry them pretty much anywhere (the gentleman at the gun
store told me this).

Since this is weak in the Jeep content arena, please feel free to contact me
directly.

Kind Regards,

Joe West
