True, but something like this takes time to plan, and since xmas is
creeping up on us, if we start now and plan, and have boxes deployed
after halloween (or thanksgiving?) we should be able to get a good turnout
for toys for christmas.
There are a fair number of tasks I can think of that will need doing,
including getting agreements from valley shops to place boxes, coordinating
dropoffs and pickups, scheduling and running a few drives near the end
to get more exposure to the general public, etc.. by getting a start now,
we can (hopefully) avoid forgetting anything critical or having to rush
things. (And the more AzVJC people we can recruit too! :)
Doing a project like this in no way excludes charity runs or any other
activity, it just seems to me like the december holiday season is a
good rallying point for us.

Dan,
I would think that it would be easier to sell/buy a
complete axle, less time and pain to put it under the
jeep.

Mike,
My uncle is coming into town on friday and my family and I were going
to take him on a scenic/mild-offroad trip on saturday. We were going
to do the mogollon rim control road and fire lookouts, which is little
more than a graded dirt road. Since my uncle was in an accident a few
years ago, he's not up to walking trail or anything, so this route
seemed decent.
However, if you're taking easy trails at Whitetanks, I'd love to go
on a group run. How bouncy / wild do you think it will get? My main
concern is that I don't think he'll be up for getting out and walking
rocky trails as I saw mentioned in an earlier trip report.
Your input is appreciated.
Thanks!

The best thing to do is get a waterproof case for boats, they are cheap,
easy to install in a jeep, and seal the whole thing off from dust, water,
bugs or anything else. Most boat supply stores have them.

Dan,
Why aren't you considering a Ford 8.8 like Dion did? They are abundant in
the junk yards. Your best candidate is found in 1995 and up Ford Explorers
and I've heard of them being found for as little as $200-400 depending on
where you locate one. 4.10 gears were available from the factory. They have
31 spline shafts and most sites rate the strength between a Dana 44 and Dana
60. They already have disc brakes, and are already 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern.
There are alot of writeups out there on this swap. They are a c-clip axle
but nobody considers this a disadvantage because its very rare to break one.
The Currie high pinion 9" axles actually use the 8.8 ring and pinions. Look
into it.

Since reading all the posts here and getting ideas from alot of you
about mods, I've decided to do a big one. Since some of you seem to
have everything imaginable on your jeeps, everything, I've decided to
convert my jeep to propane. See I camp alot and I figured this would
serve many purposes. Now my propane jeep can also run my stove, my
lanterns as well as a nice sized heating unit so on those cold winter
nights I'll be nice and warm. It's also much quieter. Sounds like my
honda, I love it. I've built a rack on the back next to the tire that
carries additional containers of propane. It's Way Cool, so long as
I don't get into a wreck, shot at or stuck in fire, it'll be
awesome!!!!
Happy hump day!

My Jeep is stock. But many others in the club are not. Good place to
get the club name out and get info out about the toy drive.

I haven't been in years, but would be willing to head out there and meet
if others are. I used to go every weekend to show off a previous
vehicle I had.

Why not just have a run of some type ( through town ) to raise money for
the Red Cross or ? to help with the disaster. I would be willing to help
and as the Wheel Dust editor I could mail invites to another 1050
people. We would have a possibility of over 2000 4 X 4 vehicles in a
line. Even if only a small percentage could make it, it would be a heck
of a showing for our sport and the GOOD we do. Just a thought.

What did you do with the breaker we did? Did you get a 40 amp?

The (only?) bad thing about the 8.8 is that it sort of locks you
into the 5-on-4.5 bolt pattern. If and when you decide to swap
in a stronger front end, it's just about guaranteed you'll end
up having to modify the 8.8's bolt pattern.
Just something to think about.

That coupled with the fact that Tractech doesn't make a Detroit for
4.88s in an 8.8 (according to their application notes) is the reason
I didn't want it.

Mike,
My uncle is coming into town on friday and my family and I were going
to take him on a scenic/mild-offroad trip on saturday.

Got some more questions.
1) Can 5 on 5.5 9" axle shafts be redrilled to 5 on 4.5"?
2) Can the backing plate be safely redrilled?
3) Is $225 to high of a price to have gears/locker installed?
Thanks.

Agreed.
AzVJC Holiday Gift Drive sound good? Or maybe AzVJC Holiday
Toys For Tots Drive.. and with the upfront time needed to get
the toys to the marines or whomever, we'll avoid any religion
or race oriented deadlines, I hope.
Good thinking!

Dan,
Why aren't you considering a Ford 8.8 like Dion did?

Last night, with the help of Chris Krieg, we installed some limiting straps
on the front of my TJ to help prevent using my shocks as limiting straps.
The writeup Chris did is on this page:

A big thanks to Chris for spending over 4 hours with me putting the straps
in... as usual; Chris did an excellent job... and one of these days; I'm
going to get a mig welder setup just like he has <grin>. Very cool setup
Chris... and boy does it work like a champ.
Thanks again Chris!

I like this idea a lot! All I've heard lately is that the red cross
needs money, not supplies at this point. Sounds like a great way to raise
some.

That coupled with the fact that Tractech doesn't make a Detroit for
4.88s in an 8.8 (according to their application notes) is the reason
I didn't want it.
