Hey everyone,
Well I have been wanting to run Lower Ajax for a while and was unable to
run it last time that the club went out. I was wondering if anyone who
knows the trail well enough to lead it would be interested in running it
this weekend? Also wondering just if there is interest in running the trail
other than me? TIA
Thanks,

Hello,
I spoke with Eric at Rubicon Express this morning and they are replacing the track bar I bent on the Cheap Trick run. They said this is not happening much. It seems that mine did not bend at the normal bend in the bar but rather it bent in the straight section.

Yes, but (and this depends on the metals composition), how
many "bends" at what radius and at what force can this thing take?
I'm not saying it's weaker than the stock one (the only thing that's
weaker is a popsicle stick, and just barely); but to what degree do
people start thinking this thing is immortal because it can "bend".
I'm not knocking it, just contributing to the dicussion.
BTW, it must be offical "AZVJC Tie Rod Week" because I bent mine
slightly this weekend as well.

Subject: Test for bent Axels
Anyone,
I get a wobble at about 65 to 70. It is not the front end. The ball
joints are good and the wheels are ballenced. I know what to look for if
it was the front.
I have been getting this for a while. Like I said I confirmed the wheels
buy rotating them and the culprit location is the same. The rear axel. I
have tilted the drivers side mirror down to look at the tire and it
appears to be the problem. I am thinking the axel is bent at the flang
tilting the tire. Anyone know of a test I can do to confirm it. I have
some ideas and would like some suggestions if possible. Or if I am even
on the right track.

Subject: Trail Tested new BFG MT's(Appetizer, Lower TC and part of Upper TC)
This week Al bought a set of the NEW BFG MT's(Can't remember the new
acronym), 35x12.5 and had them put on a set of 15x10 rims he got from Mike
Beach. The narrower rim with the tire looked great. But looks don't always
equal function. Now all we had to do is trail test them, thus this run.
Well I am happy to report they functioned as good as they look. We ran
Appetizer, Lower Tax Collector and about the 1st half of Upper Tax Collector
Sat. afternoon(turned into night too). My wife drove our TJ(still learning)
and Al followed in his. We know these trails have been run quite a bit
lately but we wanted to run something Al has run before so he could compare
the new tires to how the old ones performed.
We both aired down to 18 lbs just so it would not take so long to air up.
We headed off for the trail about 5:00pm'ish.
Appetizer was short and sweet as always. Last time my wife drove up the
little waterfall at the end she had a bit of a problem, this time as smooth
as silk and crawled right up it. As Al crested the hill he asked if this is
how tires are supposed to feel on the trail. Not a single slip, the grabbed
nicely and molded on the rocks. Al was loving life. So out of the wash and
on to Lower Tax Collector.
When needed I got out to spot, my wife was doing really well and Al was just
putting his tires where she did. Both flexed nicely through the notch. Not
sure of the obstacle name or if it has one, but most who have run it know
it. You can either take the right side over the boulders or the left to
avoid them as you make the right had turn around the corner. After a little
talk my wife was going to take the harder line up the right. Smell that
clutch(Al kept reminding me we wouldn't have that if it were an automatic).
Very smoothly, it took a few attempts and the rpm's just never seemed right,
but she kept at it and she was up and over the harder line, WAY TO GO
HUNNY!!!!! Al followed the same line and those BFG's sidewalls flexed
nicely as his tires wrapped around the rocks and he had great traction all
the way.
The light was starting to fade as we reached the midpoint. I have always
wanted to try starting up Upper, so after a little chat we went for it. By
now Al was stoked as to how great the BFG's were performing.
Out came the spotlight as I spotted my wife an Al through the obstacles. As
it got darker I was watching the front as Nick(Al's son) was watching the
rear of the vehicles to make sure I missed anything from the back side as
the vehicles went over the obstacle's, Thanks Nick you were a big help, kept
me from running around the back all the time. There is a short little
waterfall that you make a left hand turn as you crest out of it(this is not
the main waterfall obstacle, this is just before the early bail out). This
provided for some entertainment. As my wife crested the fall and made the
turn she was a little wide, so we her backed up and attacked the rocks to
exit this little obstacle a little more straight on. She had a good line
and I noticed she was going to clip the t-case skid(first time for that
since having the 4" lift). Not a problem, looked like to big deal. While
going over the Jeep shifted a little left. Still looked like no big deal,
yes the rock was touching the skid(total patch about 1 square inch). But
just enough to take the pressure off the wheels and spin away. Keep in mind
she was following the directions of the spotter when this happened. No
forward progerss, no backward progess. Al got out and stood on the back
bumper trying to get the back tire a little traction, I got on the front and
we tried to rock her. Not much success, just dug it out. Not enough room
for a tug backward, no way around to pull forward. So Al back on the
bumper, me lifting the front bumper and pushing backward we finally got her
back about a foot and a half. Put a couple of number 2 rocks and a number 3
in front of the drivers side rear wheel(filled in the hole we dug out), put
a little number 1 rock in front of the right rear and a nuber 2 in front of
the left front. Nice and slow and she was out. Al followed in those nice
35's(Al keeps reminding me I should go to a 6" lift). At this point it was
getting to be around 8:30pm and all in all we were feeling pretty good about
our adventure. So we decided to head out the exit point. Our first attempt
up the hill was not so good. Lots of loose dirt and rock. When we started
we had our two front tires already on the hill, so we got no momentum. Back
down, went a little farther back, kept it in 4 low, second gear, r's up and
away we go. No problem.
Back on the trail toward civilization. It is here that we learn why we got
such a heavey clutch smell earlier. My wife thinks she was in second gear
while taking the hard line. Oops. Lesson learned.
We get to the dune and see a whole bunch of Jeeps atop so we run up the
dune. Al and Nick went over to talk with them, they said something about
Predator, but were not very talkative to include our group of 2 Jeeps, so we
headed out. Aired up and all we were off to In-N-Out, grabbed some burgers
to go and went home to enjoy a great meal. All in all it was a great night,
nice driving by all, great performance on the new tires and I got some
exercise to boot.
Maybe this weekend we can test those tires again, Al and Nick you up for it?
Anyone interested in joining to see how those new tires perform?
Chris

Subject: [az_vjc] Trail Tested new BFG MT's(Appetizer, Lower TC and part
of Upper TC)

I called Tera because mine spits fluid out when under heavy load (towing my
camper) going uphill. They said to first make sure that the tcase was not
overfilled. The fluid level should be just below the filler hole. If that
does not help and it is only blowing a little fluid, install one of those
clear fuel filers in the tcase vent line. What that does is collect any
tcase fluid that gets slung in to the breather line. Once the Jeep is not
moving, the fluid will flow back in to the tcase. That is what I'm going to
do soon. If yours is blowing a lot of fluid, then this may not help since
the filter will fill up.
They denied to me that they have a baffle fix for the tcase, but I know they
do because others have gotten them from Tera.
In the next couple weeks, I'm going to be installing a longer tcase vent
line with the fuel filter and see how it works.

What's the solution to this, I've heard that you have to put some
sort of baffle in it? But I am in NO mood to pull out that t-case

Will it move the fluid through the vent regardless of the fluid level

Joey,
My first gut reaction is that maybe it is your rim. If you can see it
wobble then I dont think it coul dbe the flange becuase then the tire would
just spin at a off angle. try running your spare on that side or maybe switch
it out with another rim. Hope this helps,

But I think it is not the tube but the flange part of the axel that rotates with the drum. The wheel has been rotated with the same results. I am thinking if I can set the axel up on stands and rotate the wheels it should give me some idea as to what the problem is.

What's the solution to this, I've heard that you have to put some
sort of baffle in it? But I am in NO mood to pull out that t-case
again, unless it is absolutely necessary.
Will it move the fluid through the vent regardless of the fluid level
in the t-case, or will it stop at a certain point (but still have
enough fluid for safe operation)?
This is item #3 that Tera needs to address with the Teralow...they
are lucky it makes a HUGE difference on the rocks, or else they'd
have one sitting on their doorstep next week.
Thanks,
Dan

I bend a 44 shaft. The way to test is to jack up and support your rear axle (as in - use really good jack stands). Put it in gear in 4th and let the rear wheel spin. Notice the wobble - then switch wheels, to be certain it's not a bent rim. If it still wobbles - it's the axle shaft...or you have 2 bend rims...

Thanks John,
But I think it is not the tube but the flange part of the axel that rotates with the drum. The wheel has been rotated with the same results. I am thinking if I can set the axel up on stands and rotate the wheels it should give me some idea as to what the problem is.
what do you think?

Joey,
My first gut reaction is that maybe it is your rim. If you can see it
wobble then I dont think it coul dbe the flange becuase then the tire would
just spin at a off angle. try running your spare on that side or maybe switch
it out with another rim. Hope this helps,

I just did that and at low speeds I noticed nothing. used a stick to see if there was any in and out of the rim... none. so I went a little faster and got the wheel to start to wobble. It is more of an up and down movement. I think I will check with Discount about an appointment to be sure about the wheel balance. thanks

I'd be interested in either trail. Not very familiar at all with
Upper WP, so leading is out of the question for me. Suppose I'd have
to remove the hard top for the obstacle right near the beginning that
likes to lean your driver's side into the rock wall? Or take the
<cough> bypass <cough>!

Wait till Al drops those 35" tires down to 10 psi. He will be even more

Subject: [az_vjc] Trail Tested new BFG MT's(Appetizer, Lower TC and part
of Upper TC)

Subject: Re: Teralow Blowing ATF Through Vent
