Well... let's see how many folks in the group ride Motorcycles.

I've been riding motorcycles since 1965 or so (passenger only back then). My parents didn't have a great deal of money so the primary transportation for our family of 4 was two Honda motorcycles. My brother and I would ride on the back of my mom and dad's motorcycle. I think my Dad had a Honda 250 street bike and my mom rode a Honda 150 (I don't remember the sizes for sure) They bought them new in something like 1971 or 1972. Riding on the back of a motorcycle for 4 or 5 years as our sole form of transportation was quite an experience.

In the early 1980s I purchased my first motorcycle; a yamaha RD350. Once I outgrew the Yamaha, I bought a suzuki 750cc two stroke (water buffalo) and after a few years I upgraded to a KZ1000-Z1R. I owned the KZ100 for a year or so before someone turned left in front of me and ended my riding career... Here's something I wrote about the accident:

circa 1983:

I'm commuting to work on my daily driver, a 1980 or so KZ1000-Z1R... it's 6:30am, the air is brisk and I'm humming some song in my head (no mp3 players back then). The bike is holding steady at 55 or so in a 45 zone when I see a white van waiting to turn left in front of me... I Instinctively begin to slow.... ah... good... the driver is looking right at me, he sees me. I roll the throttle back on, the song in my head hardly skipping any notes. I'm now almost past the white van... almost... famous last words.

The van turns left right in front of me when there is little time for me to react. I swerve left, but not quite enough... clipping the right rear quarter panel of the van, the bike stops and I continue on my merry way; airborn.

Flying through the air with a song still playing in your head is a fairly odd feeling... I can't even say that I was worried or disturbed... It was a very detached feeling. I know I just hit a truck, I know something is happening to my body, but it is all so detached... and the song... it just plays.

Hitting the ground on your helmet isn't an odd feeling... not nearly as enjoyable as the flying was. Hit, tumble and tumble and tumble and then... ahhh... I'm stopped. The clear sound of tires squeeling on pavement but no connection of what that noise means. I just lay there and think about what I want to do next.

I'm in the oncoming lane of traffic facing the opposite direction I was traveling so I figure a good next step is to see if I can look to see if something is about to run me over. I rotate my head, no pain (good) and find I'm looking UNDER an mid-60's silver corvette.... stopped roughly 20 feet or so from where I lay. All good so far. Next I start testing to see if everything works. Legs... yes... but pain. Arms... yes... but pain. Hands... feet... everything seems to move. All good.

Now there are lots of people around me... commotion everywhere... the van driver apologizing, the lady in the corvette yelling for someone to call an ambulance... I'm pretty happy to just lie there and collect my thoughts.

The ambulance comes and I'm worked over a bit... they are testing this and that... how are you, where does it hurt, etc.

Summary: A helmet and full riding suit (nylon style jumpsuit) and gloves helped to reduce my injuries to simple sprains... no broken bones, no permanent damage.

After riding for almost 5 years, a couple of spills (mostly my fault), and with two young children on the way... I decided no more riding until the kids are grown up and out of the house.

With my youngest two children about to graduate from High School and transition to college... and with my friend Tom Walling (a member of this group; don't know his username here) showing me pictures of his latest tour... I figure it's time to get another bike.

I had ridden a few times since my accident, and every time I rode, the freedom of riding a motorcycle came rushing back... a joy that I couldn't get anywhere else. I think when motorcycles get in your blood; there just isn't anything else that will fill the void.

I knew the brand of Bike I wanted; primarily because of the engine:

I love boxer engines.

I have a 1964 Corvair with a boxer engine... I have a 2003 Porsche with a boxer engine... what other bike COULD I choose? :)

Well of course... it will be a BMW with the boxer engine.

I'll not bore you with the gory search details, but I decided on the R1200RT. I understand that many folks (even in the BMW community) feel that this is an ugly bike... but remember; I drive a Corvair! Ugly is in the eyes of the beholder :D

It will be interesting to see how many riders we have on this site :)

I had one of the first generations Interceptors, a 1986 VF500 Interceptor. Wrecked it twice within 2 weeks. First one was I swerved around a car and ended up clipping the curb and ate some rocks. Two weeks later (after fixing the bike at that), and guy pulled out in front of me in the Checkers parking lot, head on... So I sold that bike to a friend.

Now I have a 1993 Ninja 600. Not the fastest or prettiest, but it was the cheapest. Within the past 7 months of riding it, it has paid for itself including insurance and gas.

I have been riding since my teens but went awhile without one..in 2001 I got a Yamaha Roadstar that I put 63,500 miles on before I sold it 3 years later.. I then got a Yamaha Venture that I put 82,500 on and again I just sold that 3 years after I got it. During that time I also owned a 2002 Suzuki Vstrom DL1000 that I put 10,000 miles on. I just purchased a 2006 Honda ST1300A on May6th of this year and have almost 9,000 miles on it so far with my most recent trip up to Spearfish South Dakota.

I been building old Vtwins for many years now. It helps to keep me out of trouble and collect my thoughts.... what there are of them anyways.

I built my first, a 62XL chopper when I was 19 and still have it in the garage today. 2 or 3 kicks and it will fire no matter how long it has been sitting. It only took me four years to figure how.;)

I've built and sold several since then, but my current inventory includes:
1962 Custom stretched and chopped XL900 bored and blueprinted-yada yada
1984 FXST-one of the first 300 to be made, now running a 103" Panhead motor with the running gear from a '55, including the tank shifter, chain drives, and 4 speed.
2006 FLHR- Road King-My DD when it isn't so freaking hot out or looking like rain. It is my answer to buying a new car that gets good gas mileage.

I have those 3 scoots licensed, insured and running. I've got a couple of more in several states of disrepair. I'm hoping to get one together for my younger Brother soon, but then again, I've got all the parts for a stroker motor to put in the Jeep-what to do, what to do.

Thanks for the new forum, Joe. I own a few and will be riding for many years to come. No reason to print up how many times I've been hit-I just finished up my last lawsuit two days ago........

Huck

That was my street bike inventory. I've owned quite a few dirt bikes over the years, but end up damaging myself more with them than its worth.

I've been riding for close to 30 years now and have owned several but the last 15 years settled on HDs. I currantly own a 2000 softtail Heritage and the wife has a 99 softtail heritage. I might be getting a new bike soon. All 2007 big twins from HD will have a 96" motor and 6-speed tranny. I would post a pict but have never figured out how to do it. I'm on my 5th HD now and have logged over 150,000 miles on them. :D

I have to put in my 2 cents in here, although I don't own a bike right now. I grew up in the east valley riding dirt bikes. My first bike was a 1980 Honda CR80, when I was 14 years old. From there moved up to a CR125 until I went off to college.

Traded the dirt bike for a little Honda 250 Rebel which I rode my first 3 years at the UofA. Not a lot of power there but that was probably a good thing. I had one mishap only resulting in a little road rash - dumped it at about 45 mph when I hit a dog that jumped out right in front of me.

I eventually sold that when I got a truck but couldn't live without a bike. I got another dirt bike - a Husqvarna 250. That was one fast bike! So fast, I never saw the quad that hit me on the beach in Rocky Point. In fact I don't recall anything. I ended up with broken collar bone and a badly broken leg. The bike was totalled and the Mexican Police took it anyways. I have not owned a bike since then, but I have ridden quite a bit. It is true once it gets in your blood the desire to be on a bike never leaves. The pic is on a friends CR250.

I want another bike to ride to and from work with the gas prices like they are and to spare my Jeep the from the mileage. I am seriously considering an Enduro type that I can take on or off-road. Because once the off-road bug bites you, it is real hard to stay on the pavement! :D

I'm all about the scooters. Before I moved out here, I worked on the Harley's for about 7 years. Being around them all day for that long it's hard not to develop the habit. I want a touring bike but right now would rather build a Jeep istead. So until then I'll keep tinkering on my scoots and Jeep. It's funny though. I like to ride my YSR50's more than my big bikes. They get a lot more attention than the others.

Well, lets see. I guess I started riding on an uncle's Indian Warrior back in 1958.

I wish I had that bike now! I owned a Cushman Eagle for a couple of years in

high school. The first real bike I owned was a 59 triumph Bonneville for about

a year until I went into the service.

When I got out in 69, I found out about dirt bikes and owned and raced most

of the brands made back in the seventies. I never owned a street bike until

1984, and it was a Suzuki 850 four that the wife and I took many nice trips

on. Around 1989, I injured my back again and now riding a bike only last

about 10 minutes and my lower back is screaming, so I don't own a bike now.

At my age now, most of my motorcycle racing injuries have come home

to bother me. :D I still will jump on a friends bike long enough to find

the pain starting, but there's only a couple things that will give you

the adrenalin rush of a fast bike.

I think that why I got into racing when I got home from the service.:D

Wow!! I feel like I can be part of the AZVJC again!! I still have the jeep... just tryin' to sell or get rid of! So motorcycles is my calling!

I started riding about 1995 or so on an ol DT175... I think it was like a 197???? I have been playin' dirty every since! My mom got me my first bike and started the whole addiction, now she hates that I ride : )

In my time I have owned NUMEROUS dirt cycles... the DT175, 79 RM125, 250 and 400, 89 YZ490, 94 or so KTM 300, 94 KTM 550, 97 YZ125, 99 YZ125, a 2001 YZ125 and now a 2006 KX450F.

For the most part I did lots of desert trail riding with my dad. Once I got my 1997 125 I fell in love with the track. Started racing MX in 1999. Unfortunately in November 2001 in a race I broke my back and neck. That was the last draw for a while...

I needed to take the time off and that is when I fell in love with Jeeps. Since the Westside Clown Posse died down, I let the jeep sit. I bought my 2006 KX450 in Sept. 2006. Been doin' lots since then, finally enjoying the DUNES!! Unfortunately I have since then also compressed my spine (minorly) once and now I am dealing with possible surgery on my broken collarbone as we speak.

Deciding to void away from MX for a while now.. Gonna Dualsport the KX to play with, or possibly trade it for a cruiser till I get through school...

I love bikes and I have a probem!

RIDE TO LIVE... LIVE TO RIDE!!!

Turtle!

Plenty of power, reliability and basically a lot of bike for the dough. Previous owner put Vance and Hines pipes on it and I'm afraid to go to Cave Creek...

Will get back to it though!

Also have a "Baja" 150 that I bought clearance from Checker. Amazed at how well it moves my ample frame up the hills.

Oh..and a '79 Yamaha XS1100 project. Was my Dad's. I used to have an identical bike and looking to get this one going..

Can you post a picture of that BMW R75? I've always loved them!

1976 BMW R75/6. Needs a lot of work. I think the engine is siezed but I can't be sure. Tried to put it in neutral, still wouldn't turn over motor. Would be a fun Cafe racer type bike, or semi-restored daily driver type.

Just finished customizing my Hawg. Since I live in Az. I thought I would stick to the earth tones and natural beaty. Trying to please the Green gods I used as much recyclable natural resources as I could. I designed it for ease of use as well as ease of maintenance.
I call her my Home Depot Special !

Which one do you need a motor for? The Suzy or the CB?

Sorry for the late response, the CB.

I ride a Proper Chopper Custom RS 300. Big old FAT TIRE Chopper raked out 49 degrees custom bio hazzard paint w/ ghost skulls and green skulls showing on tank and rear fender. 113inch S&S with a right side baker 6 speed accu tonic forward controls Green neons shooting out all over at night, and one extremely sexy man to ride the master chair. To much to list but damn it makes ugly pretty.

I've been a bike rider for the last 15 years. I started in central Illinois before we had kids. Wife and I were hooked instantly. I started with a 77 KZ650 - very fast. Less than a year later, opted for something a little more comfy for the wife to ride as a passenger - an 81 Suzuki GS750L.

When we moved to Phoenix in 95, we brought the Suzuki with us. After about a year, it was time to upgrade, so I went out and got a 99 Kawi Vulcan 1500 V-twin. What a blast. This became my daily driver until the wife got a job working in same building as me and we needed to carpool.

From the Kawi, I went to a Electra Glide Harley, and then back down to an 1100cc Honda Shadow Aero. After that, I had too many close calls, and kids as well, so I decided to get off the street.

I've had a bunch of dirt bikes and different times. Currently, I ride a 2005 Honda CRF250X. I upgraded to the 05 primarily because I wanted electric start. I still have my 95 XR250 (posted in the for sale section).

As Joe said in the original post, once riding is in your blood, it never leaves. I'm hoping to use the gas crisis as an excuse to get back on the street bikes. :)

Matt-that post cracked me up. I'm glad your scooter is treating you well. Its getting warm out and I'm getting ready to start driving the Rubi to work again. My scooters sit for most of July and August, due to the heat and monsoons.

I hope this post finds you doing well. Ride safe:fashizzle:
