John,
I was looking at the Superior Truss too. You could always cut off your shock mounts and reweld them to the truss if you wanted.

Jon,
Do you know if extended shock mounts create any problems with clearance when
installing it. I was looking at this a few months ago as an inexpensive way
of beefing up the 35 and complementing the Super 35 I already have.

Hello!
What a great run. We had Sharky and his wife Stacy, Joe West with bride-to-be Joyce, and myself with Jake Wagner (aka Bobberman) riding shotgun. The trail turned out to be a class 4.5 going up and 5 coming down. Everybody came out with damage coming down, but none going up.There is a fence on the top of this one and a road crosses the wash just past the fence. There is a gate going up in the near future. Unfortunately not soon enough...
Joe West tweaked his roof rack, the step on his left side flat fender got some mild damage, he blew a ujoint on one side, and a hub fuse on the other.
Sharky damaged his rear tailgate. It got pretty tweaked.
I damaged the passenger flat fender today. Now I need to rework them. Not even 12 hours old I managed to damage one :( I damaged the fender when the RE Extreme Duty track bar taco'd sending my fender into the rock.
I've got a new digital camera and charged the battery the first night I got it this week and took a ton of pics since then. I forgot to charge it last night so we kept running low on juice. Otherwise we would have had more sweet pics for you all to look at. Next time I'll have a spare battery. Too bad because we all were on the end of one and sometimes two winch lines from time to time on this one.

Hello All,
steve sample lead a trail run Sunday, September 9, 2001 across Charouleau Gap
well we (wife and dogs) ran the trip solo! this was our third week in a row on the gap. guess we couldn't get enough! three scooters were at the trailhead and one couldn't get started so we helped him with tools and spark plug. we got to the summit of gap and a guy with two kids in a bronco were stranded - wouldn't start, he thought he was out of gas. he had gas but wouldn't fire. towed him out to the main trail and he got in runnin. we continued to catalina and made it in 7 hours. 13 miles of rough trail and no damage!

I was thinking of replacing my slightly bent one in my 98TJ with this
product. I know there are a few members that have installed the Alumi-Flex
Tie Rod and was wondering how they thought it worked out. I'd still need to
replace the ends because I swear that is where part of the bend is. I'm
looking at the ZJ upgrade as well.

It'd be a waste to replace it w/ a stock rod. The cheapest thing would be to
straighten it, then sleeve it (place a larger diameter pipe over it and weld
in place). Either that, or get a new chromoly rod.

My left hub fuse must have blown at the same time my left ujoint failed. The right fuse blew with one cap on my right ujoint already turned about 20 degrees and lifted.
My wheels were turned almost to the lock so I am impressed that the fuses worked as well as they did. It is fairly clear that the fuses will *almost* protect your ujoints even with the tires at full lock (one fuse did and one didn't). There is no doubt that the fuses will blow first with the wheels straight ahead or even turned. In short, 5 minutes to replace a hub fuse vs 45 minutes for an axle... I'll take the fuse any day.
The good news is that both fuses failed before any damage was done to my axles. Even the right hub fuse blew in time to prevent damage to my axle yokes... and the left ujoint didn't fail because the fuse blew but it was damn close to failing.
I wish I had some pictures to show, but I forgot my camera and Scott's camera battery was dead. My jeep was pointed so close to 90 degrees straight down that Sharky had to dig out sand and gravel to get to my winch!
I have a spare set of axles I'll be putting in tonight and I'll be rebuilding the set currently in my Jeep. I am going to be tack welding the caps in after I rebuild the axles... and the next time I rebuild them I'll just use my dremel to remove the tack welds. The next time I have a u-joint fail it will not be because the caps turned and came out... it will be because I twisted the entire ujoint in half or twisted my axle splines .
Scott did a pretty good job in his short writeup. It was amazing how difficult it was to descend that waterfall... perhaps with 38+ inch tires it would be easier. Sharky came out with the least damage (4 cylinder and D35C ) and I believe that Scott's problem was caused by a defective front track bar (look at the picture of how it was bent... did RE forget to use chrome-moly?).
I guess this was a pretty long answer to a short question... but to answer your question Nick; I won't be driving without the fuses.. they worked better than I expected under the absolute worst conditions possible (completely turned to the lock front tires).

Joe, are you locked in the front. I understand that the fuses are not
recommended for Detroits in the front as they can trash the Detriot. In the
last issue of JP they reported of a LocRite in the front that was trashed
when both front fuses let go. Just wondering.
Thanks,
Fred

Well it seems the 4.0L in My 92 XJ decided to start leaking oil. It looks
like it's coming from behind the housing that holds the oil filter. I guess
it's not a big deal I need to do an oil change this weekend anyway but I
thought I'd see if anyone had gone through this & what parts I needed.
Any advice appreciated,

It's my understanding that the Alumi-Flex tie rod is an aluminum alloy.
I'm not sure what other metals it contains (in addition to aluminum) but
they supposedly allow the tie rod to bend quite a bit without breaking.
Not sure if you meant it this way but your post made it sound as if the
Alumi-Flex was all aluminum.

Too bad because we all were on the end of one and sometimes two winch lines from time to time on this one.

well we (wife and dogs) ran the trip solo! this was our third week in a row on the gap. guess we couldn't get enough! three scooters were at the trailhead and one couldn't get started so we helped him with tools and spark plug. we got to the summit of gap and a guy with two kids in a bronco were stranded - wouldn't start, he thought he was out of gas. he had gas but wouldn't fire. towed him out to the main trail and he got in runnin. we continued to catalina and made it in 7 hours. 13 miles of rough trail and no damage!

It'd be a waste to replace it w/ a stock rod. The cheapest thing would be to

Subject: Leaky 4.0L
Well it seems the 4.0L in My 92 XJ decided to start leaking oil. It looks
like it's coming from behind the housing that holds the oil filter. I guess
it's not a big deal I need to do an oil change this weekend anyway but I
thought I'd see if anyone had gone through this & what parts I needed.
Any advice appreciated,
Eric Herring 92XJ

Subject: Headlights
I recently replaced 1 of the headlights in my 46 CJ2A and everything
was fine. Last night we went to take it out and all I got was
instrument lights. No headlights. Any suggestions? I did check the
fuse and it was fine.

They are upset, when most think of the well to do Scottsdale has long been
thought of as the source of the finacially secure in Arizona. They still
are, but the number 1 spot is now Arrowhead(as reported by the Arizona
Republic in a recent article) and number 2 is Sun City West, Then Sun City
Grand and Scottsdale was 4th or 5th on the list. Then take into account the
factor we are not driving a hummer to go with the environment, we only drive
lowly, inexpensive(they have never bought aftermarket goodies so they don't
know how expensive our pastime is) Jeeps. Then again she was only in a
Honda, must have spent all her money on the house...and couldn't afford a
Jeep...

Hey everyone,
Well I have been wanting to run Lower Ajax for a while and was unable to
run it last time that the club went out. I was wondering if anyone who
knows the trail well enough to lead it would be interested in running it
this weekend? Also wondering just if there is interest in running the trail
other than me? TIA
Thanks,

How about the cabins and mill in Martinez Canyon. You only need
2WD to get to the cabins and can easily hike to the mill if the
trail at that point becomes too difficult.
