No....I am not thinking about a voltmeter. An amp meter measures current in BOTH directions, charging and discharging. That is why it has a zero center position and shows + to the right and - to the left.
So....if the meter deflects to the right (positive), it means current is flowing INTO the battery.
If the meter deflects left (negative), it means current is flowing OUT of the battery.
Anyway, like I said, it is confusing because nothing he was doing was putting current into the battery, especially during start up. That is why I even questioned if the amp meter was working correctly.

Stu,
It would make sense if say the starter was stuck or shorted thereby drawing current. My understanding of the amp meter is, it is telling you how much current is being drawn from the battery. Just the opposite of a volt meter.
Are you thinking of a volt meter maybe?

New problem with Cherokee. Has been starting without problems and has a new optima battery. Recently had A/C repaired and was still starting no problem. Went to start today and I just get one click and amp gauge pegs to the positive side on the right. Put my battery charger on it and does the same on the start setting, and also after charging up the battery. After battery is charge and I attempt to start one time gauge on battery charger reads as if battery is completely discharged again. Sounds like a short to me but where are the likely places to look. My CB and stereo work, headlights and front turn signals work, but rear running lights and turn signals do not (were fine before). Not sure if break lights work as I am home alone.

Of course its true! Why do you think so many people change their differential
gearing when they go to a different diameter tire (always larger tires and
numerically higher gears for this group). Whats your point? Changing tires
is not the best way to obtain a desired final drive gear ratio for any
vehicle. Not just vehicles with off road tires. If you're referring to tire
pressure and its effect on the tire diameter well it can be done but its just
not practical. You just couldn't change it enough to notice woithout severe
side effects. Off-roaders and Drag racers alter the tire pressure for
traction not final gearing.

Hi All, Here is some information you may or may not know about. The
fuse & relay box on a TJ on the right fender has a wire harness coming
out and going down, right next to the battery. The harness is zip
tied from the factory to the battery tray, from there it goes back up
to the firewall. At the zip tie spot you can have a build up of acid
and will eat up the wires. I lost the horn on mine and had no acid.
The wires looked good but was broke inside the coating. If you are
having some electrical problems you might look there first.
Hope this might help someone.

I have setup a deal with the Dicount Tire and Dobson and Mian Street in
Mesa. I worked out an arrangment that if I send my customers over to their
store for tires, they would get some kind of dicsount. That way I can try and
help my customers in their tire needs. BUT, at the end of our conversation
I also happened to mention, "Ever here of Arizona Virtula Jeep club....?"
I got him to honor the same kind of discount for me, for you guys, the club.
When you go in, ask for Phil the manager, or Jason. Let them you know you
are part of the club, and that I refered you guys over there.
Now, there is no flat rate for the discount. For instance, if you buy
tires, the discount will vary depending on the brand. They have room to move
on price on different lines of tire. And that depends on the tire
manufacturer. I was told, give or take would be between 5 to 10% off. They
would also help with repairs and what not.
I hope this works out. he has taken care of a couple of my customers, but I
guess I will have to see what he does for you guys. So if anyone tries,
please let me know how it works out.
Good luck.
The second bit of goodnews I would like to pass on is that I have setup and
account with RedLine Raceing Fluids. They make additives for everything from
your raditor to gear oil. No, its not some Duralub knock off wanna be. This
is stuff has been around for alot longer, and is proven to work. To club
memebers, I am selling it pennies over my cost. The factory rep was good to
me and I would like to move some product. If you have any questions, feel

Hope this helps you guys out, take care

Mufflers exit in front of the rear wheels
1" Body Lift
2" Shackle Lift
Stock T-Case, lowered
Questions:
1. Has anyone ever done this mod to a similar vehicle?
2. If so, what should I look out for?
3. It was recommended that I would need to fab a lift using 1" steel
between the current E-mount and the engine. Comments on who might be
able to make these or where I could get them?
4. What impact would it have, provided I made no modification to the
transfer case mounts, on the front/rear drive lines? Good or Bad?
5. Any other advice?
I know this group is pretty shy, but any suggestions/comments would

Subject: Electrical Trouble
Hi All, Here is some information you may or may not know about. The
fuse & relay box on a TJ on the right fender has a wire harness coming
out and going down, right next to the battery. The harness is zip
tied from the factory to the battery tray, from there it goes back up
to the firewall. At the zip tie spot you can have a build up of acid
and will eat up the wires. I lost the horn on mine and had no acid.
The wires looked good but was broke inside the coating. If you are
having some electrical problems you might look there first.
Hope this might help someone.

What is confusing is the amp meter reading.
"Went to start today and I just get one click and amp gauge pegs to the positive side on the right."
For the amp meter to peg positive (assuming it is working), there would have to be current being pushed into the battery (charging it).
For the amp meter to deflect negative, current would be flowing out of the battery (discharging it).
Like I said.....it makes no sense assuming the amp meter is in fact working.

Wonder if it could be your starter? Sometimes if a starter (or solenoid) is bad it could act as a short. Checker or AutoZone can check the starter pretty easy. You may have to remove it from the vehicle though.

Replaced the starter that was binding up and still had no luck until I got into my technical service manual I bought from Zack. Shorted across the solenoid engine turned over. Put the meter on the solenoid. Solenoid was good but had a bad ground. Charged up the battery once more and all is good. The day started with planning to get rim for spare and go to junk yard for A/C ducting and fold down middle seat. Tomorrow I guess.

When we air down our tires we effectively make the circumference
longer. Thus, airing down to less than ten pounds as compared to
airing up to 35 pounds would make the SAME tire a "variable gearing

Top Fuel and Funny cars also use the expansion of the tires by
centrifugal force at high speeds to increase the final drive
ratio. Watch them on TV sometime when they do their burnout, the
tires expand out what looks like 8-12 inches at high RPM's.

I was watching a top fuel race and they had a little informative bit about
the tires. They said at rest they are only 30-36 inches tall but by the
time they cross the finish line they are pushing 6 1/2 feet tall.

If you have any questions, feel
free to email me or call me at the shop, 480-557-7577
Hope this helps you guys out, take care

Subject: I need some advice?
Last fall I installed a 1" body lift on my 74 CJ-5 to get some
clearance for my tires. Works great and no more tire rub. I am
considering doing a 1" engine lift to center the fan and add some
clearance for mufflers. Here are the particulars on the vehicle:
74 CJ-5
AMC 360 V-8
Outside the frame headers
Mufflers exit in front of the rear wheels
1" Body Lift
2" Shackle Lift
Stock T-Case, lowered
Questions:
1. Has anyone ever done this mod to a similar vehicle?
2. If so, what should I look out for?
3. It was recommended that I would need to fab a lift using 1" steel
between the current E-mount and the engine. Comments on who might be
able to make these or where I could get them?
4. What impact would it have, provided I made no modification to the
transfer case mounts, on the front/rear drive lines? Good or Bad?
5. Any other advice?
I know this group is pretty shy, but any suggestions/comments would
be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert
