Subject: Re: Emissions test
The god-damned emissions people! From my lovely experiences with
them I have learned a lot.
1. They suck!
2. Their machines lie. Example: Jeep passed everything with flying
colors except gas cap. New gas cap makes the Jeep a "gross polluter."
3. Their driving skills suck. The tester ground the gears hard
while shifting my Jeep.
4. Each and every DMV Emissions employee of the State of Arizona
truly loves their job and the environment they work so very hard to
protect. No sarcasm at all here, I promise!
So in my humble opinion, change the plugs cap and rotor, check your
timing, run premium gas, and be prepared to deal with some BS. Who
knows, it may be smooth sailing for you and maybe there has been a
sweeping initiative as for the customer service end of things.
Good luck!

Well Gang,
Yet another Slave cylinder bites the dust.. 4th one in 3 years..
The most recent on was changed with all MOPAR parts.
clutch, pressure plate, fluid, slave cylinder.
Anyone devise a modification to eliminate the hydrolic slave cylinder and
convert to a regular old throwout bering??? I'd be really interested in this
type of setup if any of you FAB guys have devised such a creation.. The AX15
is a good tranny but the slave cylinders SUCK!!!
I have tried every brand and frankly I am sick of tearing out my tranny to
replace this repeatedly faulty part. So if you or anyone you know has
modifyed or is in the process of modifying/eliminating this part please
contact me..
Thanks a bunch

It's actually the exact same tank, but the 19 gallon version has some internal mods to give it the increased capacity. I've heard of those that have taken the smaller capacity tank and altered it to hold the 19 gallons. Why Jeep bothers with 2 sizes is beyond me, though.

Dave,
I replaced my slave cylinder about a year ago and haven't had any problems
with it since. Mine is made by Bendix. Everything I've heard says don't
skimp on the slave cylinder - by the best you can.
If you want to pursue the swap to an external slave cylinder, here's some
info I got off the net a while ago:
For this swap you need the following stuff:
new clutch and pressure plate
factory bellhousing from a '94-up AX-15 equipped Wrangler or Cherokee
factory slave cylinder
clutch pivot arm
I'm not sure about the Master Cylinder. Your best bet is to look in a 4WD
Hardware catalog and compare the part numbers from a '91-'93 Jeep to a
'94-'99 Jeep.
You can source these parts from any wrecked Cherokee or Wrangler.

Actually 3.06 is the first gear, gear ratio for the 700R's and the
4L60's. I should know -- I have one :)
> Yes the auto seems to multiply that figure but the REAL ratio is
> still 56:1.
Actually, the auto doesn't "seem" to multiply that figure .. it
actually does. Well not the tranny, but the torque converter.
Depending on the torque converter it can multiply it a number of
times at a given RPM. I think in most Truck/RV/4x4's/Heavier cars
the ratio is around 2:1. Lighter applications are around 1.5:1 and
I've heard (just hearsay, not hard evidence) that HD applications can
reach 4:1 or even 8:1.
In any case for Tom's application (and most 4x4's) the TC effectively
doubles the torque input into the tranny. So his effective crawl
ratio doubles as well. In first gear, Low-range his actual crawl
ratio will be anywhere between 56:1 and 112:1. This is why those of
us with automatics always drive with one foot on the gas and one on
the brake. As he is climbing up a rock, that ratio is 112:1, as soon
as he crests the top, he's at 56:1.
Hope this helps....

Subject: RE: TeraLo
The torque converter doesn't change the FELT ratio, it changes the REAL
ratio. A torque converter multiplies off-idle torque by reducing
(increasing?) the gearing. The numbers are a bit fuzzy (it's a fluid
coupling,) but the generally accepted figure is 2:1, although I have seen
documentation showing that in some cases it can be closer to 3:1. At
highway speeds the torque converter (can) lock up at 1:1 for better
efficiency, and lower engine speeds (RPM). -(There would be a foot note
here discussing lockup and nonlockup torque converters in a perfect world.)
I'm not sure what kind of documentation you are looking for exactly, I
could point you to 80,000 places that state the same as I do above, of
course you could just as easily find them yourself. If you're looking for
an in-depth examination of torque converters, I'm not really prepared for
one, and don't really have the free time to "go there" with you.
Hope this helps anyhow.
Here's a look at a torque converter anyway, it may help:

Tom,
What is the first gear ratio on your auto? 3.06 is a fairly steep ratio for
an auto. If we give your auto the benefit of the doubt and we use that
number your actual crawl ratio in first gear might be 56:1. Yes the auto
seems to multiply that figure but the REAL ratio is still 56:1.
Jon has a 5 speed so his ratio would actually be higher than
yours(3.86*4*4.56)= 70.4:1. But once again the torque converter seems to
raise the felt ratio compared to his.
Correct me if I'm missing something here. This is all friendly in nature :)
Anybody have any input as to how much the auto affects this? I'm curious.
Please back up your responses if you can.

Nature of the torque converter will just about double the crawl
ratio. A low speed "RV" converter is closer to 2.4:1, some of the
streetracer converters come close tot 1.5:1.
Probably a better explanation than I could come up with can be
found at : http://www.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm
If you don't believe this 'multiplication' of torque - you should
be able to prove it from the flipside. Engine braking with an
automatic is about half that of a manual...
(unless you hotrod the lockup clutch *vbg*)

Anyone want to lead a run on a 3.5+ trail in the west valley this
weekend?
From the description, it sounds like Gila Monster would be good with
the optional 4.0+ sections, but I know that was run last weekend
(would have gone but was wrenching all weekend).
I've never done any wheeling out that way and what to run something
new for a change.

I think that you really want to break those new gears in correctly, rather
than just break them ;) I certainly wouldn't do any 4 wheel'n the day after
new gears!!!

I'd be interested in this too. For example, since the engine isn't the factory original what standards are the jeep held up against?

Subject: West Valley Run
Anyone want to lead a run on a 3.5+ trail in the west valley this
weekend?
From the description, it sounds like Gila Monster would be good with
the optional 4.0+ sections, but I know that was run last weekend
(would have gone but was wrenching all weekend).
I've never done any wheeling out that way and what to run something
new for a change.

I think that you really want to break those new gears in correctly, rather
than just break them ;) I certainly wouldn't do any 4 wheel'n the day after
new gears!!!
