View Full Version : Pyeatt Draw Run - Sat, July 22nd

Is Pyeatt Draw open right now? I know there were a bunch of fire closures and then sporadic reopenings. Whats the status of the Draw?

I'm thinking about making a run up there next weekend...Saturday, July 22nd. I need to get some maintenance done on the jeep but it should be ready by then.

Anyone interested if its open? It will be cooler up there in the high country.

I saw in JP that the Draw is going to be part of a trail preservation that BFGoodrich is sponsoring with Tread Lightly and US4WDA.

It mentioned that there were even grants to local clubs to help in the activities. You boys up in the Rim country heard anything about this yet?

I would be able to go (if it's open) on July 29, spend the night up there. But I got a BBQ that I can't miss on the 22nd.

No problem. I have yet to make it up to that trial...soon though.

How difficult is the big falls? Ive always seen pics of winch lines pulled. 37s, ARBs and 115" wheel base - what are my chances?

Your chances of making it up the big falls are very good. Just make sure you have a winch/anchor point ready just in case.

I'll post more details on this run next week. I'll also do a calendar post at that time. This is an awesome trail and temperatures should be much cooler.

This run will be on the 29th.

Meet at the Conoco gas station by Fort McDowell Casino at 8am. The gas station is 2 miles north of Fountain Hills up the 87hwy. For those already up north, we can meet you at 9:30am at McDonalds in Payson where the 260 branches off east. If you know where the trail is, meet on the dirt road pull off for the draw. We'll air down there.

Minimum Requirements:
33's and a winch or tow hooks in the front. I also recommend a spare tire. This trail is as difficult as you make it.

Just to pass along,

While we were having lunch, Chuck, president of Rim County Wheelers (I hope that's right?) stopped to chat with us. He was 'making the rounds' to all the groups running the trail today to let them know that there are some that want to close the area to OHV. He just wanted to remind us of that and to be respectful to the environment, no trash left behind, etc. I thought we should share the message.

You guys are making me nervous with this weather. I suppose Saturday was the second hottest day this year in Phoenix so it was probably a bit warmer? A business associate from Portland, OR said it was 104 up there even. So anyone have a idea of about how hot it was? I'm going on the run next weekend and I really don't want to put my hard doors on (I hate wheeling with the high sill they have). Yeh, I have no problem riding topless/doorless when it's 117 here in Phoenix (even driving to work) but I'd prefer not to be in it an entire afternoon straight. :)

Bob - I really wanna do this run with ya sometime. Maybe a little later in the summer when it's DEFINITELY cooler. Sorry I missed you this time, but I had to go "shoe shopping"! ;-) Got some nice ones. There was a big sale in Flagstaff! Heh heh!

I wouldn't worry too much about the heat. I took the windows and door uppers off once we got there, and it was nice, warm but still ok. Then put everything back on for the ride home, man it got hot when I hit Fountain Hills. I really wish I had full soft doors, they'd have been off...

Yeah, you can make it. Most of the tough lines are optional and the final section can be completely bypassed if your not up for it.

My only recommendation is to make sure you have either a winch or some tow points on the front of your jeep. The final obstacle requires winching.

JD and Rich,
I'm seriously considering rolling up for the trip, but no trailer. If I go, I'll prolly head up on Friday night and camp with the dogs. I've got a weekend with no family around and may just be able to take advantage of it. If I can make it, I look forward to seeing you both.

RokNRich

Now we're getting somewhere !!!!!!
Friday night camping sounds good. Will trailer if that's the case. I'm only about 75% right now. Got some tweaking to do on the jeep, some work BS to clear up, wife to appease, etc.

Where you thinking of camping ?
How about trailhead directions and a time to meet for those considering camping ?

Weather forecast for Payson:
Friday
Scattered T-storms
High: 85°Low: 63°

Saturday
Scattered T-storms
High: 79°Low: 61°

Could be wet and wild

Edit: 15 minutes and google gives me Houston Mesa Campground as a possible location to camp. zLink: http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/recreation/rogs/camping/Payson/HoustonMesaCampground2.pdf
I may pull the travel trailer (think RAIN) up there if I can get the wife to drive the jeep, otherwise will trailer the jeep and sleep in a tent. The campground has showers and stuff, 25 sites for first come/first serve. Of course if someone knows or is planning on camping elsewhere, let me know. I just need room to turn the truck and trailer around without testing their flex. :)

I will kinda be trailering my rig up there... I'll be using the tow bar. Does this trail head have a good staging area to keep the truck? Also does the end of the trail loop back to the staging area or do I have to drive a ways to get back to my truck? If it's 79 on Saturday that would kick arse. I'd imagine with this rain that this area will have a bit of water in it.

Yeah, there is a staging area at the trail head. We'll air down there and park the tow rigs. From there, we'll run the draw. There's an access road that runs parallel to the trail and weaves in and out of the draw. At the end of the trail, we'll take that access road back to the staging area.

I'm considering driving up there with my doors on and then once we get to the staging area, I'll take them off. There's a good chance for a ton of water in the draw. That's gonna make for some good wheeling! :D

For those wanting to camp, there is a camp area right at the start of the draw. I'd love to camp but not sure if I can work it out. I'm also not sure if you can have fires. I was there in May and the forest is filled with fallen branches and trees that are a spark away from going up in flames.

Rich,
I'd be happy to hang with ya and was wondering if it was going to be a solo gig, for me and the pooches. I figure they will enjoy getting wet in the draw, as much as I would. I'm working on my heap tonight. I'm getting it up on the lift and doing a bunch of general maintainance. If it all goes well, I will be up for camping on Friday and wheeling Saturday or Wheeling Saturday and camping that night. I would just do a light camping gig. I'll be driving the heap up with my N2 tank, cooler, tent and bag and tools. The dogs will be taking up the rest of the room back there.
PM or call to let me know your thoughts/progress. If we don't get away for camping, maybe something local then-it should be cooler, here, by the weekend.

How long is this trail? How often "if any" are the bail outs to the service road? Iam locked front and rear with dana 60's and 37" tires but I have just gotten a lot of new stuff on and haven't thoroughly tested every thing. I don't anticipate any problems but just wondered about what if's. I wouldn't want to hold anybody up!

plenty of places to bail - there is a dirt road that parallels the creek and cross it in quite a few spots.

I MAY camp Friday near the trailhead I guess, if the weather is conducive to sleeping in the back of the truck, won't be up till evening though.

Anyone have directions to the trailhead ? PM if necessary.

There are several of us that don't know exactly were to camp and is the road in off Houston Mesa good enough for trailors in the rain/mud or is a 4x4 tow rig going to be fine ?? I would like to leave town around 5pm depending on the group .

I'm down for camping on Friday night if we can have fires.
I found this on the Tonto National Forest website:

http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/news/071906.shtml
Tonto National Forest Lifts Remaining Fire Restrictions

PHOENIX (July 19, 2006) – All fire restrictions affecting the Tonto National Forest have now been lifted, effective Thursday, July 20.
The fire restrictions, which covered the entire forest, are no longer needed because fire danger has been reduced by increased moisture and humidity from the annual monsoon season. These same wetter conditions prompted officials to reopen closed areas. The closure orders limiting public access to the Mogollon rim and the Pinal Mountains were lifted on July 3.

“We want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we had to restrict access and activities on the Tonto during this fire season,” said Tonto Forest Supervisor Gene Blankenbaker. “We also appreciate our users supporting and observing the rules; Arizona had a difficult fire season that was made a little easier by the small number of human-caused fires.”

For more information, visit the Tonto website at www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto or call 602.225.5200.

Matt,
Could you do the same for me. I may be out for camping on Friday. I may need to meet folks up there and would like to know where to meet them.

Due to the hunt draw, I need to move both my Willy's and my hunt trailer from the old house to the new house. I've got someone willing to help with the shuffling Friday afternoon/evening and I don't know what time I'd make it up the hill. Anything can happen when driving vehicles that don't see daily use...... and I would like a contigency plan in place.

It seems like a ton of folks will be in on the run.:D Shouldn't make it difficult to find the group. I'm assuming ch4?

Here's to a 'cool' day

I'm sure someone will know the way, it's alot easier than you think, I'd lead everyone up but camping at payette draw is alot of fun, so I'm heading up tonight instead

I'll be rolling up with about 4-5 Jeeps and will meet up with everyone at the McDonald's in Payson or we can even meet at the trailhead if we are running late...... I figure there will be a slight traffic jam on the draw with the 14+ Jeeps that have expressed interest in going:D We'll be running up 87 and may see Rachel's group heading up there. I look forward to Saturday.

Ben, if it means anything, I'll be leaving on the hard doors and hard top. I don't feel like switching tops. I figure the doors may help with the wet and the same with the top.

Variable clouds, a couple of thunderstorms. Winds from the SW at 9 mph. High: 83° F RealFeel: 87° F

Payson, AZ Weather Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy with a couple of showers and thunderstorms possible. Winds from the S at 10 mph. Low: 70° F RealFeel: 70° F

I think its about 1.5 hr drive from there to the 260 in Payson I think (not positive, its been awhile). So to meet the rest of the gang at mcdonalds on time at 9:30 we can't wait at the station long.

Thanks Crawldad (JD) and your wife. I got home okay.

This is by far my favorite trail. I always do something different each time I go. At the "end" where the waterfall is, everyone gets together and heckels eachother up the fall. Great people, great fun:D
A big thanks to Johnny for setting this up and keeping things together. There were a lot of vehicles out there. I counted 24 at one point.
Thanks to the Bratt Pakk. They hung back with us and helped with recoveries and heckling! "Cletus" was no exception!

I finally got some decent body damage on my rig. I seem to drive a bit different now that I have a DD to drive.

Looks like there was lots of water. What happened to your rig Ben? Any other damage to speak of?

The stock drag link snaped in two near the adjuster sleeve. Damian of BrattPack had some tube that was trimmed and crimped to fit and then welded. this happend while climbing out of the water onto the little shelf just behind where Rich's jeep is in his photo. But wouldve been really scary driving it down the mountain with a patched draglink, so JD towed it.

my only other damage was a tweaked valve stem that no longer takes any air. Tweaked fenders all around. A mysteriously missing parking lamp. a candy striped front driveshaft. ANd I blew a bead but was able to reseat it with co2. the 6 or 7 psi really helped on this trail other than that little problem with the bead.

I had a great time and will gladly do this trail again. Howd the others do?

Hey guys,
A good time was had. We had a good group of capable Jeeps and drivers. I had fun climbing on things and making conversation with friends both new and old.
Rich, I like the new signature and I hope Boston treats you well.
JD and Clara, as always, I enjoy your company.
Ben, I'm glad you made it home. Seeing how squirrely your rig was on Shea, I couldn't have imagined you driving it down the hill. It looked like a handful, just driving in town. In the end though, you got your junk home. Running 6-7PSI in your tires, had at least 6 people thinking that you were running with flats or blown beads. However, it made those trxuss' realy fold and stick for you. I'd see how your tires hold up and keep running them like that.
Kit and Kevin, thanks for hanging in the rear with me. Good company and friends. You were right and the waterfall did take a bit to negotiate with the trail repairs and winching.

The tree saver earned its keep on the waterfall and I did find a new vibration on the way home. It seemed that I forceibly removed one of my exhaust hangers from the exhaust. All fixed....
Great time for a 'big run' and it was nice to see the 15+ Elk, on the way out of the draw.

I'd like to first thank John for setting this up and keeping it moving. I'd imagine it's very difficult to keep everyone moving when there's 20+ rigs. I'd also like to thank Ben for lending the pickle fork so I could get my tie rod off. The job would have been much more difficult if it wasn't for him. Also the member of the Bratt Pakk for the pipe to sleeve the tie rod. This saved me from having to use my high-lift handle. Can't forget to thank Nick and Richard from Performance Offroad fame for getting down in the trenches and helping me out. I can't say enough about the integrity of a company that wheels and at times breaks with their customers. BTW, does anyone have the pics of Rachel, I, and (I believe Kevin and JD) on the obstacle that took my tie rod? I'd like to check that out. Last but not least thanks to Justin for offering to follow me back to town since when leaving I wasn't sure how the Jeep would handle the tow bar with the toe out of whack. The trip was pretty uneventful. I did however under the lights of the gas station in Payson further attempt to get the toe back to where it needed to be.

The trip was very fun. Last year there was talk about having a trail 101 workshop on the trail. I believe Pyeatt Draw really could be the perfect spot for this. Although this trail has a high rating it really is as others have said a trail that is as difficult as you make it. With the exception of the last fall that everyone in both our groups had to winch up (which technically you can completely avoid my exiting the trail just before it), the entire run could be run with a stock Jeep if you just literally go around the obstacles that are beyond your/your rigs ability. Someone had mentioned you could run this trail 5 Jeeps across and really in many areas you could. Another reason why this would be a suitable location is it's literally within minutes of camping and there's exit (entrance) points to the trail everywhere. A trail that offers such a variety of obstacle difficulty combined with the natural beauty of the area makes this the perfect trail.

Keep posting them pics. :) I'd really like that one poser shot of me if anyone can track it down.

I hope someone has a pic. from friday night of me clearing the trail of bugs on the big rock . Sorry I didn't get out of the truck when you guys got back from town but I had just gotten dry and warm . I swear we got atleast 2 to 3 inches of rain saturday night .

This was an amazing weekend! Thanks to everyone for coming out! With so many rigs, everyone stepped up and lended a helping hand. And another thanks to the AZ Brat Pakk! Those guys were a huge help and a hell of a lot of fun to wheel and heckle with :D

I'll be posting pics over the next few days. My passenger took a bunch of pics and I'm hoping to get them soon. I'll combine both of our pics and post them to webshots. In the meantime, I'll post some throughout the day.

We got up to Payson on Friday night. After we got all settled in, we decided to do some night wheeling. Here's Darren.

Yeh, I kept looking down and seeing the nub I would have broke my hip on if I rolled on my drivers side. Some metal between me and the nub would be nice. I really wouldn't care about rolling on the passenger side. Us old folk have to worry about breaking our hips you know.

talk about good luck... you know the drag link that snapped on my jeep out on the trail... well, the trail weld served its purpose and got me off the trail. But the weld just broke loose last night as I was pulling into my driveway. So it was good idea that jd trailered it down from payson. I don't think it wouldve made it. I am one lucky dude.

See Ben,
Every once in a while, I've got some good advice. Steering linkages and welds never mix..... At least not for giving me the warm and fuzzy's...
I'm glad you listened..... and made it home in one piece.
Did you have any luck getting the remaining draglink piece off?
Let me know.

Hey Ben if you need some stock parts to get you buy go see Eddie or Simon at 4Wheelers they most likely have some stock spares in the back that will get you back out till you upgrade .

He's replacing everything with a Currie set up and he's already got that set up. He was just having an issue dropping the stub end of his broken drag link yesterday. Once its dropped, he'll swap in the new parts.....

yep, best advice I ever took.

Still no budging on the pitman arm. I'm contemplating buying an air hammer and pickle fork attachment from harbor freight. This was recommended to me by Leonard. I'm too tired to do this today and I've got work to do at the office. But tomorrow I may try it if the penetrating lubricant doesn't hep. But I've always got tripple A to call on with the PLUS membership (I highly recommend it guys... 100 miles free flat bed towing) to send it to joes on Fri.

Ben if the pitman is siezed or rusty give it a 5lb sledge hit and use a puller and it should slip off without taking it to a shop . If you need a puller let me know I have one or if your careful the Harbor Frieght one will work but it may take a couple swings to get it to loosen and trust me you won't hurt the pitman arm .

to use a pitmand arm puller I'd need to use it from the top of the arm... not enough clearance to do that :(

*** edit: or maybe there is if I turn the wheel, duh
