Subject: TR - Payson
This weekend my wife decided she wanted to go camping in Payson, something
we have not done for a long time, too long. Since we were not sure what to
expect we made sure we took along another Jeep(Al and his son Nick) and the
third Jeeper had to skip at the last minute(major bummer).
We headed out about 2 hours late(we are very sorry Al and Nick), go into
Fountain Hills, topped off and got some breakfast and were off again. My
wife using a great map(ok pretty good map) found a trail(FR) starting in Rye
and leading into Payson or if you take a longer option a little North of
Payson. I think it was FR421, anyway we were off pavement and all was well.
For most of the trip it is a 1.5 trail, all done in 2 wheel drive. This was
not a trip to be challenged on it was for the beauty of the environment and
to get to cooler air.
The scenary began to change, the bushes to evergreens, the sand to whispy
grass with purple and yellow flowers intermixed. At this point we had been
moving along pretty slow so it was decided to take FR67 across into Payson
and skip the extended route. The last sign we had passed had a 7 on the
bottom...I wonder...We stop and discuss our options.
We headed back to the sign, about a half mile. Yes the sign has a 7 as the
last number, but the top area had been shot up. It appears that there were
two numbers preceding the 7, so maybe it is not the right trail. Well it we
take it the worst that can happen is that 406 is on our left and the freeway
is on our right, we will cross one of them sooner or later. (and a three
digit trail ending in a 7 was not on the map)
We head off, either side of the trail is now completey covered in the whispy
grass and flowers with evergreen getting a little bigger. We approach a
couple of down hills and uphills that can be done in 2wheel drive, but would
require some momentum, so a shift into low range was a better option. None
of these were too difficult, might have hit a 2.0 with these. But again the
scenary was what we were looking for.
A few more miles and the sand was now rocks, pines cones on the ground and
the scent of pines in the air. Around a bend we come and wait a minute,
where did this hill come from??? Looking around for where the trail
is...this hill before us must be it. We now have a hill that is full of
loose rocks, softball size plus, various rocks that were well set in and
could easily damage a diff and fairly steep, could it be a 3.0??? I think
it is. A quick shift and a slow crawl and we crested the top. A few more
ups and downs like this followed. As we crested what we would later find
out was the last one Al called out to hold up. There were hearing a
rythmatic woosh sound. Nick and I stood next to his right rear tire where
the sound was coming from and nothing, Al started rolling forward and all of
a sudden from nowhere a 1.5" slice in the sidewall of his AT opened up and
WOOSH out comes air. Then he rolls past it and no air escapes. We decide
to move on and see how far we can make it, we feel like we are close to
Payson, but then again about 5 miles back we felt that way too.
About a 1/2 mile up Al calls out again to hold up, the air is gone. We pull
my spare 33x12.5 and put it on his right front and move that right front to
his right rear. Why you ask all this tire rotating? Al is running
35x12.5's, he has a LSD so we wanted his rear tire size to match and not
cause any unecessary wear and tear on the LSD. So my wife is on the phone
trying to find a tire. She can't get the Qworst(Qwest) directory, so she
calls my mother-in-law and asks her to call int tire shops in Payson for a
35x12.5 BFG AT used or any 35x12.5 used. She gets a pretty poor response.
However she locates a new 35x12.5 tire by a store near her, then starts
making arrangements to have a remote tire guy meet us to mount and balance
the tire, wiat a minute could it be, yes our last stop to change the tire
was less than a mile from pavement!!! We put my mother-in-law on hold to
see what we find.
Keep in mind she was told by Big-O, Discount and all other tire stores in
town they did not have a used 35. We pull up to a family out for a walk and
ask where the nearest tire store is. They tell is to head up to the light
and Big-O is on the corner. We pull in as they are starting to put the
tires away. One of the guys and Al head out back for a look. Out comes a
35x14.5 Swamper. They quickly install the tire on Al's rim, we put my spare
back on, Al goes to pay(thinking ok, Swamper, last minute, here comes a
hefty bill. Total rings up $45.00 out the door. I know we praise the local
Discounts alot, but the Big-O in Payson came through big time!!!
We are off to set up camp. We found a really nice area and kept going until
we were the last campsite along the trail(left quite a few in between).
Found a really nice area and set up. Got a nice little fire going, set up
the grills, put on the steaks and brats and went to town. The temps were
higher than I expected, but cooler than in town. The stars were great, the
moon was bright(right Al?) and the fresh air was awesome. As we all headed
for bed we could hear the music of one of the camps, talk about partiers,
must have gone of for hours.
Next morning we woke, slowly got ready for the day and packed up camp. My
wife had located a trail FR71 that would start out from the Eastern part of
Payson and take us back to Sunflower down the East side of the freeway this
time. After a top off of gas and ice for the coolers we headed for the tail
head. After several attempts to find it failed we went back to the Rangers
station to ask, but they were closed. So we ate a little snack and decided
to call it a weekend and head for home. Overall it was a great weekend.
This is a trail we all decided we would do again soon and will find the FR71
for the trip back. This will be one we post next time, but keep in mind it
is a trip for the views not one to take if you only want a challenge.
I will post some pics on the website soon, we should have taken more of the
scenary, but just forgot.
By the way is there someone in the club up there this weekend in a Green TJ?

That's an excellent decision to go to 4.56s. This is

They are all 19 gal tanks. You just have to pay extra for the 19 gal tank option to get to use the last 4 gallons.

From what I know they are one in the same tank. The difference is that
Jeep used the same tank, but used a different device for shutting off
when it was full. Kept costs down. There is a post on the 4 Bangers
United site I belong to that walks you through increasing your tanks
capacity. You may have to verify a few things to be sure it applies to
your TJ, but you can find the directions on the link below.
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~jyokomur/
Go to Technical
Then 15-20 Gallon Conversion(about mid way down)
Hope this helps.

The kind you want for the external rings have serrated "Jaws" which will actually hold the ring open while you remove it from the shaft. Try Snap-On or maybe Sears.
DO NOT EVEN attempt to remove the rings with a cheapo pair with pins, etc. It'll take you all day.

Hey Scott,
I have a pair you can use. I live in the Chandler
area. (Elliot and 101) I have the big Snap on ones
with the serrated jaws and the drilled detent. They
are the only tool for the job!

It's an easy process. I've done it on my YJ. You just have to pull the
whole gas fill area off to get to the two hoses going into the tank. The
skinny hose is the one you want to pull out of the tank, just make sure to
put the outer part of the skinny hose back connected to the tank and fill
hose. You'll see it all when your in there. It also helps keep the gas
pump from clicking off so much!

Called up and spoke to Brandon that is in charge of the Teralow
dept. I told him the addendum that was added to the Teralow
instructions wasn't entirely accurate nor extremely beneficial. He
said he knows that alot of the 231 t-cases have had to have the shift
fork shortened, but was not aware that the instructions only called
out for the 2001 models and did not explain exactly what needs to be
done. He said he would work on rewriting the addendum to include all
models, as well as explain in more detail exactly what has to be done
in order to obtain correct shifting.
For me it was pretty obvious as to what had to be done, however I
don't think that when your working on something as important as a
transfer case, you shouldn't have to guess at what the instructions
are implying.
Chances are I won't know if any changes are made, until I go to put a
Teralow in Tara's jeep, but if he does get it done, then that would
represent great customer service; and maybe some other people won't
have to go through the same hassle and jeep down-time I did.

This is

From what I know they are one in the same tank. The difference is that
Jeep used the same tank, but used a different device for shutting off
when it was full. Kept costs down. There is a post on the 4 Bangers
United site I belong to that walks you through increasing your tanks
capacity. You may have to verify a few things to be sure it applies to
your TJ, but you can find the directions on the link below.
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~jyokomur/
Go to Technical
Then 15-20 Gallon Conversion(about mid way down)
Hope this helps.

Ok, I do not normally sent stuff like this, but I had to tell you, I have
truely enjoyed your site for the last couple hours, I molded over every pic,

front, limited slip in the rear. 31x11.5 ATX tires ( yeah I know the

but then came kids. Now I yearn for another 4x4, so soon as I find one, I

Like new only 3 months old.. Paid 200.00 new!!. Console Security Box is made out of Steel with two holders for a CB/Radio/scanner whatever you can think of. I had my CB mounted in it. Drawers lock in so no one can steel them. Mounts between the Windshield using the footman loop holes and the rear row bar. Have had no problems with box. Have to get rid of Console getting a Roll Cage added on and the Console will not work, bummer for me. Kevin

The kind you want for the external rings have serrated "Jaws" which will actually hold the ring open while you remove it from the shaft. Try Snap-On or maybe Sears.
DO NOT EVEN attempt to remove the rings with a cheapo pair with pins, etc. It'll take you all day.
