Subject: [az_vjc] Teralow Install Question
Well I installed my Teralow into my 231 t-case today. Haven't put it
in the jeep yet, because I'm not sure if everything is correct.
Every piece went together fine, and I didn't have any problems
putting the case back together; my problem lies in whether or not it
is shifting properly. I can get it to shift into all 4 locations,
however it is very difficult to change gears.
Every part is in the case and I'm positive in the correct position,
no gears or any other internals are in anyway damged, and the shafts
spin smoothly with the correct reduction and/or neutral setting.
At the time of this post the t-case is put together, sitting on my
bench, with no oil in it. So I was wondering if any of the people
here that have put a teralow in their 231 (read: installed it
yourself) can give me some insight as to the similarities to the
stock t-case vs. the teralowed t-case from a shifting standpoint.
I have another stock t-case in my garage as well that I can compare
it too, and it shifts much more easily (also has no oil in it).
Bottom line is everything works perfectly, except that it's somewhat
difficult to shift. I'm leading to believe this is a combination of
no oil yet, and new parts.
Also, if anyone in the nearby area is free or bored tomorrow morning
and would like to stop by and take a look, or help out, or B.S. I
should be working on it again by 9ish in the morning. I'm at
US60/McClintock.
Thanks in advance.

well no one signed up as i posted rather late in the week-thurs! alan doty and eric murphy contacted me email and made the run. they brought their sig others- stephanie and alexis. eric also brought his dog sophie. also sinon from tucson brought his big chevy blazer. he frequents the azvjc web and hooked up with the jeeps. sinon is a member of the tucson rough riders. we all made it un-scathed and had a blast! we got started around 8:30 and got into oracle around 4:30. took a long lunch at the cabin about mid-way and then entered the rocky-wash where the road doesn't show on the topo. the big chevy had no probs fitting- sinon would just go over the rocks we jeeps would squeeze between.this trail is a great one and i will do another run soon.

The green TJ made it back, we got seperated during the run and got
back late. The CB's weren't working, so we couldn't talk to anyone in
the group. The GPS worked like a charm!!! Surveyed the damage to the
Jeep this morning, looks like the steps weren't the only casulty, I
came down on the body in 3 places both diffs took some abuse, light
skid damage to the t-case skid and gas tank. Rolls fine, so it looks
like it's all cosmetic damage. Scott had plenty of pics... it'll be

Did anyone have to modify the shift fork in order to get their 231
teralow to shift properly? Upon further inspection it looks as
though the shift fork does not go far enough down into the casing, to
allow the pin that comes off of it to ride on the shift sector.
With the instructions, there was a side note that stated all 2001
models have to shorten the shift fork 1/8" to ensure proper
shifting. In my case, that looks like it would be the difference
between it working properly or not...however this is out of a 97 TJ,

If anyone in the area is free this afternoon, and would maybe let me

Dan,
My Teralow went together quite easily in my 99 TJ. I also installed Tera's
2low shift kit.
Is it hard to shift on the bench or installed? On the bench it does take
some work to shift it. Once installed and filled with fluid it should shift
fairly smoothly once the linkage is adjusted. Maybe that new crossmember is
causing the linkage to bind? Look at the linkage. The horizontal rod that
has a pivoting ball on one end near the tub should be level. If its tilted
either way you'll need to put in a bracket to relocate it or it will bind
and shift hard.
Let me know if you have any questions. I'll try to help as much as I can.

I personally like the Pro-Comp starps. The loops are lined with leather
which adds alot of life to the strap. The come in 20' and 30' sizes. And
they are pretty well priced. Offroad Unlimited carries them. They usually
have a good stock of them

Hello All,
steve sample lead a trail run Saturday, September 1, 2001 across Charouleau Gap
well no one signed up as i posted rather late in the week-thurs! alan doty and eric murphy contacted me email and made the run. they brought their sig others- stephanie and alexis. eric also brought his dog sophie. also sinon from tucson brought his big chevy blazer. he frequents the azvjc web and hooked up with the jeeps. sinon is a member of the tucson rough riders. we all made it un-scathed and had a blast! we got started around 8:30 and got into oracle around 4:30. took a long lunch at the cabin about mid-way and then entered the rocky-wash where the road doesn't show on the topo. the big chevy had no probs fitting- sinon would just go over the rocks we jeeps would squeeze between.this trail is a great one and i will do another run soon.

I got a chance to stop by and see Joe W and Chris K yesterday while they
were working on Joe's TJ. Joe took it back to John at Hunter this week for a
couple mods and it looks great. John added a plate that protects the tranny
mount bolts and welded in some flat plates in a couple of key areas. The end
result after round 2 at Hunter Offroad looks excellent! Very nice job on the
design Joe. Great fab work, John.

Hi,
If it turns out that someone broke down and you need some help either
searching for them or getting them out; let me know... I'd be glad to help.
By the way... do we have the list of the group who did the run? I'll check
the azvjc web page and see if the list is complete.
If you went on the run and you are home now...speak up!

Scott had plenty of pics... it'll be
fun to see them when they get posted. -Rob

Subject: More Teralow Issues
Did anyone have to modify the shift fork in order to get their 231
teralow to shift properly? Upon further inspection it looks as
though the shift fork does not go far enough down into the casing, to
allow the pin that comes off of it to ride on the shift sector.
With the instructions, there was a side note that stated all 2001
models have to shorten the shift fork 1/8" to ensure proper
shifting. In my case, that looks like it would be the difference
between it working properly or not...however this is out of a 97 TJ,
not a 2001.
If anyone in the area is free this afternoon, and would maybe let me
bring my case half and the fork by for a second opinion that would be
great.
If anyone is certain they have the answer, maybe you can call me,
that way I can get it done instead of waiting on emails.

David,
Thanks for leading the run. I hadn't seen you in a quite some time and it
was nice to run together again. You've found some awesome trails out there
south of Buckeye. I can't wait to go out there again.
As far as a trip report goes there were no casualties on this run other than
one bruised ego caused by a loose boulder lodged up inside the frame rails
of one member's Jeep...you know who you are ;) I'll let David list the names
of those in attendance, etc.

Subject: RE: More Teralow Issues
Dan,
My Teralow went together quite easily in my 99 TJ.

A while back there were some posts about tools rattling around in the back of the Jeep. My wife sewed up a couple of "Home Depot" nail aprons (cheap canvas type $0.97 each) for my wrenches. Keeps the wrenches in place and rolls up tight. Took her about 5 minutes to sew up the necessary slots. Cheap rugged quiet tool wrap.
