Tim Naylor and I will be doing approx 5 to 6 days of Jeeping heaven in Moab.
Will go up Sat, the 15th (or there abouts), and wheel until we puke, then
head back probably later that week or 9/22 at the latest. We'll be staying
at the Red Rock. Trails we'll likely do will be Hell's Revenge, Pritchard
Canyon, Moab Rim, Golden Spike, Poison Spider, and what ever else we can
find.

Anyway, it's be great if we could get another couple of Jeeps to join us.
Anyone interested??

They come apart very easily.... like 'one little hinge pin' easy.

Subject: [TR] Coke Ovens - Monday, September 3, 2001 - Reminder

Hello All,

Scott Grigsby is leading a Coke Ovens trail run on Monday, September 3, 2001.

When: Monday. Labor Day
Where: meet at the Texaco at Florance Juct. At 7:30 AM
Rating: 2.5+
Length: better part of the day
CB Channel: 4

We go in the back way off battle axe road between Superior and Kearny. Lots of good Scenery to look at. We will come out in near Martinez Canyon.

The Coke Ovens Trail is an all day trip. It covers a lot of different countryside, traveling over and around the rolling hills and traverse some rocks and ledges in the road.

Years ago the Coke Ovens were built to support some of the smelters at the nearby mines. It's a fairly common misconception that they made coke, which is made from coal. However, they were built to make charcoal from the then more plentiful mesquite of the Gila Valley.

Over the years they have been closed to the public numerous times and several have been used as "housing" for the hermits of the hills. At one point (so the story goes) an owner attempted to convert them into a type of tourist resort - and started to make rooms out of them. You can still see the lofts he installed in some of them. This project was never finished.

At this time we are able to see and explore these amazing creations. They are located on the side of a hill along the Gila River and are quite spectacular.

Across the Gila is the old town site of Chochran. If the water is low, there is a river crossing to the west of Chochran that can be taken for an exit out to the Florence-Kelvin Highway

This trail is definitely a favorite for all levels of 4-wheelers. Stock vehicles shouldn't have any problems although clearance is highly recommended. There are several areas of "rock stair steps" that will be a challenge to the novice or stock driver.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

There's also a fungus that lives in the soil here in the desert
that causes respiratory diseases. The fungus involved is called
Coccidioides immitus and is usually inhaled by people who live, work,
or travel near areas of highly concentrated organism. That's the
major reason that dust ordinances are in place all across the
valley. The respiratory ailment primarily caused by Coccidioides is
called "Valley Fever" and resembles the flu. In the elderly, in
small children, and immunocompromised individuals it can even cause
death. Sure, watering down construction sites wastes precious water,
but the alternative could be deadly. People shouldn't live here, for
that matter- this is a VERY hostile environment that we have tamed
and shaped to our needs. Phoenix is a logistical miracle to even
exist. Breathe lightly, tolerate the watered down construction
zones, and remember that we need someplace to live so that we can be
close to year 'round 'wheelin'.

Lachlan

P.S. Anybody want to invest in my newest invention? It's a K&N
airfilter that fits in my mouth and comes with a nose plug so that I
only breathe filtered air...

Subject: Re: Re: OHV Park and dust, and fungus...

Wasting water is relative. A friend of mine in Gilbert gets a million
gallons of water a year for $3/month, from the irrigation canals.
I imagine the flood/river runoff gets us a lot of water now. The issue
will be when Comrade Davis and the rest of California get hungry for
even more of the Colorado river.

Where I used to live in the SF Bay Area, we had water issues, and I
lived by the Delta where two large rivers combined with the pacific.

Why the problem?

The feds were diverting the flows of one river to save some worthless
fish and this was causing the ocean water to flow farther inland,
drastically increasing salinity and affecting water quality for ~1
million people. Go figure.

Dust concerns aside, I think the person who earlier brought up that
wherever we tried to get a park built, some never-before-seen 'life
form' would be found.

Maybe we should pitch in on an F350 longbed and put a snack shack in the
back, and take it on AzJC runs instead. ;)

Subject: Modified my Turbo City sidebars to match body lift

After I installed the MORE 1" body lift on my TJ, I had a big ugly gap
between the body and the Turbo City sidebars. It just didn't look right.
Plus, this negated the clearance that I should have gained by installing the
body lift. Well, over the past couple days, I modified the sidebars to match
the body lift.

You can see how I did it here:

http://members.home.net/rv6a/SideBars.html

For those who missed the original link to my new website (it was buried in
one of the alcohol posts), here it is too:

http://members.home.net/rv6a/jeeptjsite.html

I've added a few more mod writeups since then too.

For informational purposes:
Water on a construction site where they are moving the dirt
around is needed to make it possible to compact the soil so that
it will support whatever loads are going to be placed upon the
site. It has nothing whatsoever to do with dust, although the
suppression of dust is a secondary effect.
So....when you see them thoroughly soaking an area, they are not
wasting water, they are using it to accomplish the task they are
paid to do...to make building sites, roads and other things that
everyone finds so useful.
Soil engineering is pretty interesting, without water, those
folks would just be pushing a bunch of loose particles around and
your houses and roads would be very cracked and unstable. Water
makes it possible to make the loose particles into something.
Have Fun!
