One thing to consider is, they are going to reconstruct this area
anyway. They must have 100's of tons of large rocks that have to be
relocated. With this being known I don't think it would take quite as
much effort as the Tucson location but, the time period would
probably be equivalent.

Subject: TJ Oil Pan Skid for 2.5L

Hi All:

I'm looking for an Oil Pan Skid for my '00 TJ. It's a
2.5L with a Side Draining Oil Plug.

Turbo City told me my Oil Pan it is not standard and
they do not make one for my Jeep. TC told me the
standard set-up is a rear drain on the oil pan.

My Jeep was bought brand new off the lot with no mods,
so I'm hoping there is another vendor that makes a
skid for my TJ. Anyone else out there have one for
their 2.5L '00 TJ? If so, please e-mail me directly.

Thanks!

Jake

I'll have to agree with Stu. I was at the meeting as well and
They'll have no part in helping us...

But if you want to run in the river bottom and not bother anyone.
Head over to 83rd ave and the Salt.. You can access the river there and no
one cares... Just wach out for the water from the treatment plant..
If you head farther west to 115th ave you can access the river there as well
you can run it from here all the way to Galespie Dam.
Just wach out for the quick sand and the overgrown trees near the water...

Have fun

Even if you could overcome the liability, etc. obstacles, I seriously doubt
you could get it past the air quality issue (ie.., the dust). They closed
the Aqua Fria river bed on the west side of Phoenix a year or so back.
Maricopa County's dust regulations were all it took to close that area down.
I know this for a fact because I attended the land use meeting right after
it happend, hosted by the county/city folks.....the dust sniffing folks were
there from the county and recited chapter and verse the rules that made it
happen. Also in attendance were the BLM, State Trust, Forest Service, etc.
type of folks, who were also quite interested in this whole issue.

So....to open up an area that is guaranteed to crate tons of dust....I hate
to say it, but dream on. Maricopa County will NOT risk its state and
federal funding $$ because someone wants to go off-roading in the middle of
town, IMO.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

Subject: Re: TJ Oil Pan Skid for 2.5L

Jake (and anyone else who'll benefit),

I have the Skid Row skidplate and I'm very happy with it. My TJ is a '98
with the 2.5L. The oil drain plug is on the passenger side of the oil pan.
Skid Row makes a plate specifically for the 2.5L TJ. This plate covers the
oil pan and tranny and ties in with the factory transfer case skidplate.
Providing continuous coverage from just behind the front axle all the way to
where the stock x-case plate ends. It also protects the exhuast pipe where it
winds around your oil pan. If you smash your pipe bad enough the engine will
run poorly or not at all. If ther is one down side to this plate it is the
fact that you lose about 1-1 1/2 inches clearence at the oil pan/tranny. But
so far this has not been a problem and I don't expect it to be. Losing
clearance at the transfer case is a different story. As you know my TJ has no
lift, but 31" tires, and I just did Charouleau Gap trail which is rated 4.0.
The places where I hung up on this trail had nothing to do with the oil pan
skid plate. Maybe one spot but another few inches and I would have been on
the x-case anyway. I believe the Turbo City plate mount directly to the oil
pan with adhesive and only protects the oil pan. I'm sure its cheaper and
offers more clearance but I looked at this one too and..... the Skid Row was
$248.02 delivered to my door. I didn't look at all the plates available but
Skid Rows is well built has excellent coverage and give me peace of mind.

I ordered mine directly from www.skid-row.com, I found out about it through
the "Project TJ" at www.dirtroads.com (same place I found azvjc)

Subject: TJ tranny mount blues are gone

Hello,

Over the last couple runs I noticed my shifter would wobble alot and it progressively got worse until on the last run the whole transfer case was flopping around. I crawled underneath and sure enough the drivers side of the tcase was almost resting on the crossmember and I could easily move the tcase around. This was the 3rd stock rubber tranny mount in 2.5 years that has failed. This last one lasted only 3-4 months. It was time to fix this for good.

When I bought the last rubber one around the end of last year (I finally installed it with the long arm kit a few months back) nobody had released a poly mount yet. Both Daystar and Prothane were working on a TJ prototype.

This week I did alot of checking around and it seems that Daystar is currently redesigning their poly TJ mount and it won't be out for about another month. That was unfortunate because all the local shops carry the Daystar line but not Prothane. I called around to alot of mail order vendors this week but nobody could get me one by this weekend. I finally called Prothane and got the number of 2 dealers in Arizona. One was Delta Motorsports in Phx which obviously wasn't a Jeep shop so I called the other number, Lee's 4WD in Tucson. He did have one in stock for $42.99 but I wasn't sure it would get here in time and UPS red label was over $30. My sweet bride-to-be, Theresa, volunteered to drive down and pick it for me on Thursday so we could get on the trail this weekend. I owe her one!

My initial impression was that it was very heavy. I decided to get on the scale and the thing is 4 pounds! The old one could not have weighed much more than a single pound. This thing felt like a brick.

I have the RE long arm suspension so I wasn't looking forward to dropping the crossmember. It turns out I did not have to drop the RE crossmember to install it. I have found on multiple occasions that having a 2" body lift in addition to the 6" suspension makes repairs much easier to do. Once again this was true and after removing the 4 nuts that bolt the mount to the crossmember I had enough room to jack the drivetrain up and get a 3/8" ratchet in there to remove the tranny mount. I slipped the new one in, bolted it up, dropped the drivetrain down and tightened the nuts that bolt it to the crossmember. I then grabbed the back end of the transfercase and gave it my best to move it but could not get the drivetrain to wobble at all. This was perfect!

I recently rebuilt my CV driveshaft too. All 3 of the u-joints were sloppy. I figured since I was already dirty this was a good time to pull out the angle finder and check out my driveshaft angles. The pinion end ujoint should be between 1 degree negative and 0 but was 1 degree positive. In this situation it would lead to vibes and binding under torque which may have killed the tranny mount and u-joints. I shortened the upper control arms and it now sits at .5-1 degree negative which is perfect. Under torque it should point up to a perfect 0 degree angle. A measurement of the pinion showed that it is now pointed up 24 degrees. The CV joint can easily handle that angle.

A quick test drive showed that I dialed in the anlges perfectly and there was no takeoff slop, it was very smooth at all speeds, under acceleration and deceleration. I barely noticed any extra vibes from the poly mount. I now have 1" lifted poly motor mounts and a poly tranny mount. You can really feel the positive hook up of the rear end now that there is no play in the drivetrain mounts. The difference from rubber mounts to poly is like night and day. All I could say was Wow! It felt "tight". I recently helped Joey K install a poly mount in his 4 cylinder YJ. He has poly motor mounts and a poly tranny mount and his vibes can be felt just by touching the body of his Jeep. The 6 cylinder still felt pretty smooth. He had noticed how tight his drivetrain felt which is what convinced me to get the poly mount.

I think it it was a good decision to go with the poly tranny mount. I recommend that anyone that needs to replace their tranny mount look into the one by Prothane. Four Wheel Drive Hardware ( www.4wd.com ) has them in stock for $39.99 if your not in a hurry like I was. They come in black or red so Sharkey could get a red one like I did. I bet he's envious.

Regards,

Scott

Hello Scott, Stu, Joe, and the rest,
Boy, it sounds like there will be quite a group coming up from Arizona to Moab. It should be a BLAST! I am not sure of the order or agenda as of yet for the trail runs. But that is not a problem. With what you all are equipped for, you can pretty much take your pick of trails. If you and Stu and Joe and the gang have plans, or want to run a couple trails other than what we are doing, no problem. And the trails that you all want to tag along on with us XJ's, is no problem either. NAXJA's camp headquarters is the Slickrock Campground. I am really looking forward to running some trails with you guys, for I haven't run any with you all to this date. It will be great to meet you all. Sure sounds like you guys are definitely outfitted for anything. Try not to make me look to bad, he, he, ha, ha. I will be arriving Monday, the 8th. Look for me at the Camp Headquarters so we can get introduced all around, and talk trail runs. If by chance any of you want to participate in the other activities during the week, and receive a dash plaque, Trail flag, Friday night dinner for one, and Entrance fee to Sand Flats Recreation Area, There is a 45.00 fee for non-members. There will also be drawings for vendor donations ( Jeep parts, accessories, etc. ). You can also purchase additional drawing tickets for 1.00 each. You can also purchase additional Friday night dinners for adults for 8.00 each, and kids for 3.00 each. But if you are only interested in running a couple trails with us, don't worry about fees.......... the main purpose for members to pay any fees, is mainly for the cost of our website and misc. event stuff. I am really getting excited, and counting the days. Rags, Brian Harmon, Rick, and myself and some others I am not aware of in our local club (AZ_VJC) will be attending this event. Maybe some of us can convoy...................... take care............

HI Jake,

I have a '99 TJ 2.5 also. Chrysler makes a skid plate that bolts on. Got it at Earnhardt's for $94.51. Got them to install it for another $35.00. It covers the entire oil pan back to the factory transfer case plate. Works well but changing oil is a little difficult. It works pretty good and has saved me a few times since my TJ is stock except for 31" BFG A/T tires.
