Everyone,
Currently all trails listed on the AzVJC website are available to
both members and guests. The only info not listed for guests is "how
to get there."
After thinking and talking about this, perhaps it would be a better
idea to not have any trail info available for guests. Or perhaps
certain trails should not be listed except for members.
A new poll has been opened and will close Sep 6th. I will change or
not change the website in accordance with what everyone agrees upon
here.

Good luck getting this one past the greenies. We all know it is just a
dried up riverbed with no use but to turn it into an OHV area but the greens
would come up with something. Who would we need to get in contact with to
see if it did have a chance?

I agree. Seeing as how all you need to be a member is a Jeep and a
computer (actually, you don't even need the Jeep, but it's nice if
you do). I don't really see what difference it makes either.
Although, just having to sign up could possibly deter any
irresponsible riff-raff looking for a new place to wheel. But, if
someone wants the info bad enough, they'll sign up and join.
Maybe we should hide the info to non-members and make them go through
a series of pages that describe good wheeling practices (pack in/out
your trash, TREAD lightly, etc.)? Once they get the gospel, then they
can sign up and have the trail info.

I've lived here 25+ years and that is exactly what I used to do about 12 years ago. There was no official park then, but since the Monsoons came and washed out either Mc.Klintock, Rural, or Mill briges practically once a year - nobody gave mind to me driving around down there.
There were just homeless camps and rocks and sand, no Tempe lake and no big corporate ownership of the area.. Sigh, now that I think about it, it really sucks around there nowadays.
Anyways, to the east of McKlintock towards Mesa there is the sewage treatment plant, yick.. Further east from there begins a quarry operation that extends to Country Club. From Country Club going east the river takes a northern bend and heads onto indian land, with lots of "Indian land - No Trespassing!" signs. Its indian land all the way out to the SRP operation from there..
Can you tell I have been back recently looking for a way down into that river bed? I think that leaves only the west portion of the riverbed, starting at the Airport. It looks like there are may be a few quarry operations along the way in that direction.. Any farther and I start to wonder about my surroundings.. Hey man, you wanna buy some crack on 24th & Broadway?

This is just an idea, and maybe a stupid one.
As I was driving along the 202 east today, I was remembering being able to
run through the river bottom. I noticed further that there are some stair
steps in the river bottom just west of McClintock.
Now I have never been in favor of OHV park but, if somebody was to put one
in the river bottom it might be kind of neat. The dirt bikers and quads
could use it, it if went for a distance. You wouldn't have to worry about
big boulder (obstacles) being washed down the river when it runs. In
addition, it would look more natural than a flat piece of reconstructed
river bottom they have constructed.
I don't think you would get much support for this in Tempe, but maybe Mesa
(they may not have a part of the bed) or the planned reconstruct in Phoenix.
Well that's my idea. If you know anybody willing to take on such a project
then please through this their way.

I am sure that the Newly found Parasite that lives on the belly of the Red
Belly Spotted Inland Duck Billed Giraffe Neck Newt, found only in the Tempe
River Bottom would be in Jeopardy. Therefore no OHV park and now they will
close all surrounding areas, make the Jets fly in and out with a new path,
no new stadium, possibly close down ASU all together and the city might have
to remove the lake, but they cannot let it run down its natural course as
that could drown the species(never heard of before this debate about an OHV
park) so it will have to be pumped out into the streets to run off.

I agree with Brent on this issue. Hiding information is not a very
effective approach. Since we advocate education on responsible land
use as opposed to land closures, we should practice what we preach.
Let's wrap a bunch of responsible land use and Tread Lightly stuff
around the trail info and then encourage others to come to our website
for this information. After all, it's "those others" that need to be
reached and educated.

Everyone,
Currently all trails listed on the AzVJC website are available to
both members and guests.
