Hello All,
Scott Grigsby is leading a Coke Ovens trail run on Saturday, September 1, 2001.
When: Monday. Labor Day
Where: meet at the Texaco at Florance Juct.
Rating: 2.5+
Length: better part of the day
CB Channel: 4
We go in the back way of battle axe road between Superior and Kearny. Lots of good Scenery to look at. We will come out in near Martinez Canyon.
The Coke Ovens Trail is an all day trip. It covers a lot of different countryside, traveling over and around the rolling hills and traverse some rocks and ledges in the road.
Years ago the Coke Ovens made "coke" for smelters at the nearby mines. Over the years they have been closed to the public numerous times and several have been used as "housing" for the hermits of the hills.
At this time we are able to see and explore these amazing creations. They are located on the side of a hill along the Gila River and are quite spectacular.
This trail is definitely a favorite for all levels of 4-wheelers. Stock vehicles shouldn't have any problems although clearance is highly recommended. There are several areas of "rock stair steps" that will be a challenge to the novice or stock driver.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Subject: Exhaust system
I'm looking for some help regarding my exhaust system. On my 94 YJ I have the stock exhaust system. Now, I'm not mechanically inclined at all. In fact, about the only thing that I can do is change my oil, tires, air filter and wash and wax it. I've got the 6 cylinder 4.0 liter engine and I was looking for someway, if there is a way, to give it a little more of a "beefy" sound as well as maybe boost the performance level a little. I had heard that there is not much that can be done with the engine that I have and I have also had people talk about putting on a "catback system" and a flowmaster muffler. I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I was looking for a relatively inexpensive way to do this if such a way exists. I was looking at spending maybe $300 give or take.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Matty

Subject: Something Broken?
What are the symptoms of a broken tranny mount on a TJ? I'm not 100%
positive, that's the problem, but Tara's jeep has developed some
really odd characteristics. If you are moving very slowly (forward
or reverse) then apply the brakes abruptly, everything from the front
axle, front steering, driveshafts, t-case, transmission, back to the
rear axle shifts a few degrees. It will also do it if you let the
clutch out quickly. Also a loud, dull thunk can be heard. I've never
had this problem, so not really sure what to try and diagnose. It's
a 2001 TJ with 3" lift. I've done a visual check and nothing I can
find is unusual. No bolts missing or broken anywhere along the
drivetrain (axles, control arms, brackets, etc). No (obvious) broken
welds anywhere. All the steering componentry is tight and bind
free. It's as if the whole drivetrain just likes to move around.
The motor mounts are also fine. The jeep drives, shifts, brakes
normal.
I've compared it side by side to my jeep which is nearly identical
(drivetrain wise), and it is completely different, so in other words
something is wrong.
I know that all jeeps have odd noises, etc, etc, but in this case I
know something isn't right.
Any suggestions on what else to look for and/or what a broken tranny
mount would do?
Thanks,
Dan

Buy a new high flow muffler.
I picked up a Flo~Pro (FP214) muffler ( http://www.flopro.com ) for
my TJ 4.0 for about $60. Supposedly, they've got higher flow rates
than the Flowmasters, Borlas, etc.
I had to go through U.S. Tire and Exhaust ( http://www.uste.com/ ) to
get it, because I think they're primarily sold in Canada.
I had it installed at Meineke for about $50. I decided not to
increase the exhaust diameter to keep the low end torque. So, I just
had Meineke re-use the stock exhaust pipe. It's a good thing too
because there's not much room back there for a larger diameter pipe.
I've also heard good things about the Flowmasters, I just decided to
go a different route.
I was concerned about what it'd sound like though. I feared that I'd
sound like one of those little rice burners or a Harley or something.
But, I'm pleased with the sound, I actually kind of like it now. Once
I installed it and a Turbo City air-tube (I did that just to make
room for a York), my mileage increased quite a bit. With a 19 gallon
tank, I was only getting about 200 miles after installing my lift.
Now, I get anywhere between 250-270 miles out of a full tank.
For a total cost of about $110, I'm pretty happy with the
performance.
Oh yeah, the muffler is beefy as heck too. I think it's made out of a
1/4" aluminized steel.
If you wanna hear what the Flo~Pro sounds like, check here:

All this pin does is allow you to shift into low range
while still in two wheel drive. Kindof a neat option
when you think about pulling a steep hill with good
traction. or pulling a heavy load, like firewood!
(tree)
It is located on the "inside" of the shift lever
tower. You can really only get to it buy pulling the
t-case, or when the body is off. You can decide which
is easier.
I haven't done mine yet be cuz I haven't pulled the
t-case out yet.
Hope that helps,

Go north on rt. 89 about 12 miles north of Lone Rock at Lake Powell turn left at Paria Canyon run it all the way to Kodachrome State Park you will pass the Vermillion Cliffs, it is a beautiful ride it hooks up with rt 89 by Kanab and you can run highway back or return the way you came.
Also try Smokey Mountain Rd. to the right at Big Water on rt89 about 7 miles north of Wahweep, beautiful view of lake.

Here are some formulas that may help:
Where:
M = MPH
R = RPM
T = Tire Diameter, in Inches
G = Gear Ratio
P = Pi (3.14)
X = Minutes in an Hour (60)
Y = Inches in a Foot (12)
Z = Feet per Mile (5280)
M = (R * T * P * X)/(G * Y * Z)
R = (M * G * Y * Z)/(T * P * X)
I believe you want to figure how fast your engine will be turning at
60 mph, correct?
M = 60, G = 5.88, Y = 12, Z = 5280, T = 39, P = 3.14, X = 60
R = (60 * 5.88 * 12 * 5280)/(39 * 3.14 * 60)
R = 22353408/7347.5
R = 3042.273
So at 60mph, your engine will be turning just over 3000rpm. While
this is possible, I wouldn't recommend this over an extended period
of time. My CJ-5 would turn just over 2500 at 60mph, and I never
drove it for more than an hour or two on the highway at those speeds.
BTW, your crawl ratio (92) will definitly be down there!
If you're wanting to drive this more on the highway, I'd recommend
going with 4.10's and a 4 to 1 kit for the transfercase. Your overall
crawl ratio will actually drop to 104 and your engine will only be
turning 2100rpm at 60mph.
If you have MS Excel 97 or newer, I have a spreadsheet that will help
you out; just let me know.

Go down to Lopers & buy a 2-1/2" in/out Flowmaster muffler (I prefer the 3 chamber delta flow). Then take it to Mad Hatter & tell them to make a 2-1/2" cat back using it & if you still have about $60 left have them put in a 2-1/2" high flow cat too. Off the top of my head I think it'll cost you about $200 without the cat.

BTW An air tube & K&N filter will help too.

You about described what a broke t-mount will do. Beyond that you should
notice the shifter will move around too. I just replaced my mount in the
YJ and didn't really notice that it was bad until I looked under the tub
and noticed that the yoke near the t-case in the rear had traveled up
about 6 - 8 inches to scrape the tub. Lucky I didn't break anything. The
best way to check is to look at it. There's not many bolts and all you
need is a jack to hold the trany up. Unless you have an integral skid
plate and long arm kit.
Scott K. has a broken mount and is having similar problems. I think he
said Prothane makes a mount for the TJ.

Hello All,
Scott Grigsby is leading a Coke Ovens trail run on Saturday, September 1, 2001.

Subject: Re: Exhaust system
If you wanna hear what the Flo~Pro sounds like, check here:

and scroll down to the middle of the page.

tires, air filter and wash and wax it. I've got the 6 cylinder 4.0
liter engine and I was looking for someway, if there is a way, to
give it a little more of a "beefy" sound as well as maybe boost the
performance level a little. I had heard that there is not much that
can be done with the engine that I have and I have also had people
talk about putting on a "catback system" and a flowmaster muffler. I
don't have a lot of money to spend, so I was looking for a relatively
inexpensive way to do this if such a way exists. I was looking at
spending maybe $300 give or take.

I think you would twist pinions left and right. 5.13 is the lowest I have seen for a 14 bolt anyway... But the cool thing is there are "thick" gears so you dont have to buy a new $$$$ 14 bolt carrier...

Hey R
Go north on rt. 89 about 12 miles north of Lone Rock at Lake Powell turn left at Paria Canyon run it all the way to Kodachrome State Park you will pass the Vermillion Cliffs, it is a beautiful ride it hooks up with rt 89 by Kanab and you can run highway back or return the way you came.
Also try Smokey Mountain Rd. to the right at Big Water on rt89 about 7 miles north of Wahweep, beautiful view of lake.
Have fun

Subject: Re: 5.88:1 R&P too low?
Here are some formulas that may help:
Where:
M = MPH
R = RPM
T = Tire Diameter, in Inches
G = Gear Ratio
P = Pi (3.14)
X = Minutes in an Hour (60)
Y = Inches in a Foot (12)
Z = Feet per Mile (5280)
M = (R * T * P * X)/(G * Y * Z)
R = (M * G * Y * Z)/(T * P * X)
I believe you want to figure how fast your engine will be turning at
60 mph, correct?
M = 60, G = 5.88, Y = 12, Z = 5280, T = 39, P = 3.14, X = 60
R = (60 * 5.88 * 12 * 5280)/(39 * 3.14 * 60)
R = 22353408/7347.5
R = 3042.273

Eric Herring 92XJ (with Flowmaster)
