Subject: Need Cap for Clutch Reservoir
Help! The salvage yards won't separate the reservoir and the cap. All I
need is the cap. Does anyone have one lying around they can part with?
Or know a good place to acquire one? This is the cap to the clutch
reservoir for the hydrolic fluid. It's just a matter of time before the
fluid eats the sticky off the duct tape I have on there now.

I am a little late in posting/reading as I just got
back from a quick trip to Montana for my bridal

promise that Scott will return to his normal,
friendly, jeeping self after the wedding. I am going to

If it is a straight cut you want, go to Home Depot or Lowe's and pick
up a Metal Cutting Blade for your circular saw (if you have one).
I originally bought some Craftsman blades from Sears and blew through
those like nothing cutting 3/16" plate. Then I got smart and went to
Home Depot and picked up some blades that were about 50 cents cheaper
and lasted 4x as long.
Just be carefull not to twist the blade in the metal or it will chunk
and fly appart on you.

I was up there at the end of July and ran Black Bear. It is not
really challenging as far as 4 wheeling is concerned, it is just
really narrow and really steep with some sharp, sharp switchbacks.
I don't remember anything on the trail that should get you in trouble
with even a stock Jeep. Heck there was a stock Suzuki Samuri that
followed us across. I think he might have had slightly larger tires
than stock though, probably 29 or 30" tires.
The only thing I think you'll have to worry about is snow. The time
of year you are going is when the snow starts in the higher
elevations. Heck, one 4th of July weekend we went to the top of
Black Bear and it was snowing then. If there is snow on the trail at
the top, I would turn around and head back to Red Mountain Pass.
There just isn't enough room for sliding around on snow/ice; you'll
end up going down the fast way -- straight down the 1000ft drop offs.
Two way traffic is allowed all the way to the top of Black Bear from
Red Mnt Pass. But once you start down toward Telluride, then it is
all one way, you can't turn around and come back.

Subject: Re: To the radio Guru's
I concur with Stu and will add the following. The 2 meter band is the
most popular band and you will most likely find more repeaters on this
band than on any other. But, the 440cm band is also becoming very
popular due to the amount of "traffic" on the 2m band. You'll find a
lot of 440 repeaters too. So, if you want to maximize your chances of
being able to reach a repeater while out in the middle of nowhere, you
should get yourself a dual-band radio that operates on these two bands.
They are common. You should also consider a vehicle-mounted unit (as
opposed to a handheld) because they usually put our more power. And,
of course, a good antenna is always important.
Finally, you'll want to pick up a directory of repeaters so, when the
need arises, you can identify repeaters in your area along with the
band they operate on as well as specific details about how to use them.

Subject: Re: Overheating...is anyone knowledgable about cooling fans?
That's extremely interesting about the "spinning air dam effect". I hadn't thought about that. Thanks for alerting me.
"How hot is hot"? I usually run just shy of 210 for the most part (normal for a 180* stat), but if I turn the AC on, the temperature gets as high as over the next line up (240*?) before I shut the AC off and run it at a fast idle to get it down again. You guys may think I'm a major wussy running a trail with the AC on, (and that's fine...I probably am), but when you spend money for "creature comforts" it irritates you if you can't use the money you invested. It's a little like buying a house with a pool with a gate that locks on hot days. You can see it, you can feel it, but you can't use it. I ran a Cherokee for years without AC on the trail, but decided a few years ago that it was time for an upgrade.
Anyway, it's a problem that only exists in the summer, and I am leaning toward the 5.9L fan fix, as that seems like the only one that will GUARANTEE a solution without modifying the fan shroud unrepairably. Unfortunately, I can't fit a pusher fan (anti-sucker) on the front of the radiator the way they have done the grill on the ZJ.
Thanks again for the air dam perspective...I would have gone and wasted $50 as well as my labor to install it, then reinstall my old one.
Cheers,

They actually will reduce the efficientcy of your cooling sustem at higher RPMs. It works on the principle of the blades flattening out at higher speeds, when the fan is not supposed to be necessary because the vehicle speed is enough to provide airflow. The problem with the theory is that when you reach higher RPMs, the fan blades flatten out, effectively giving you a flat, spinning, air damn that blocks air from your engine and pulls squat through your radiator! Imagine the negative side effects this would have on the trail where higher RPMs are frequent, with vehicle speed rather slow! Plus, it will overheat your engine in a heart beat climbing steep grades at highway speeds, especially if the Jeep is loaded down or pulling a trailer. These fans are a spiffy looking waste of money and will not solve your problem. The electric fans should solve your problem. The $75 extra electric fan in addition to the mechanical sounds like the way to go. This fan could be mounted on the outside of the radiator if you have more room there. Just position it to blow through the radiator, rather than suck(hehe, that always cracks me up).
I do have one question, though. How hot is "overheating?" Modern engines run pretty hot to begin with, with 200 to 210 an accepted "norm." Unless it's hitting 230 or higher, I wouldn't even worry about it. Especially if it cools down right away when you get moving again.
Just my .02! Your mileage may vary (missed seein that lately!)

Subject: [az_vjc] Overheating...is anyone knowledgable about cooling fans?
Hello all you Cooling Gurus:
I'm running a Grand with the 5.2L V8 that likes to heat up during extended idles. I'm considering one of three things:
1) Swap my stock cooling fan for a FlexFan (about $50)
...or...
2) Running an auxiliary 16" fan between my mechanical fan and the radiator (3" of space doesn't leave me much and around $75)
...or...
3) Completely remove the stock fan and clutch and run with a stock two-speed electric fan out of a '98 5.9L Grand Cherokee (about $200!!!) A sub-benefit would be that I would get a little more horsepower from the lesser load on the engine.
Does anyone have any insight into what would work best (read: most cost-effective increase in cooling) for me? It ONLY overheats on a hot day while idling or rock-crawling and usually only when the AC is on.
Thanks in advance.
Yours truly,
"Jeep in Heat"

A few weeks ago I was driving with the AC on and all of the sudden it started to come out of the top vent by the wind sheild. Then it came back to blowing out the regular vents in front of me. a few days later it started to do it again and then about a day or so after that it stuck to where it only blows out the top vent by the windshield. I checked the heater settings to see if that would change anything and it looks like it is stuck to the top vent. I am wondering if it as simple as just changing a controller out that I can buy at Auto Zone, or if I nee to take it to the dealer. It's a 97' Tj with a 4.0L. TIA

Kevin,
Here is my $.02 worth. I've experienced the same
problem on my '94 4.0 I6 ZJ with 133K miles. However,
my current setup on my rig is a lot different than
yours being the fact that I've much lower gears
(4.56s), Ramsey winch jammed next the radiator, and
not to mention the way oversized tires (36" TSL). In
the very hot day (+100F), my temp. guage mornally
reads between 210 and 230F with the AC on and
sometimes it reaches 240F for a long driving and/or
pulling a trailer. According to the dealer, 210F is
normal but 240F is not an unusal. To play it safe,
I've purchased a 3-coil radiator ($150) with a new
factory thermostat ($195F) to set aside for a day when
I really need to swap it. Perhaps before I am heading
up to Lake Tahoe, CA to run the Rubicon Trail late
this year. Maybe you need to do the samething...
Linda Luik - do you have any inputs on this...

Sounds like a vacuum line came loose. This happened to me in my Mercury
(not the Jeep, although it did involve rocks!). I pulled the dash out and
found that the line that comes off the back of the controller had slipped
off of a can about 4 inches up. I'd probably pull the unit out of your dash
and trace the line from the back of the unit up into the dash and see if
it's still connected.

Apx. 270,000 on vehicle, apx 50,000 on engine, trans, tc,. Ok, here we go, one June morning I go out to start her up, she fires right up as usual then dies, I restart her and go through this 3 times before she stays running, doesn't happen again for at least 3 more weeks, can't find anything wrong. About the first of July I go out and she turns over but will not start ( no fire at plug wires), the next day I go out and she fires right up and is fine for the next week or so and then one morning will not start again. In the meantime I find myself down in Phoenix so I stop in at Lou Grubb and pick up a new ignition module and coil since its never been replaced in the aformentioned 270K , after installing these I have no problem for at least 2 weeks then, yup, she turns over but will not start( yes I tried putting the old ign. mod and coil back in, no change), I'm mad, call tow truck, tow truck arrives, driver says hey this sounds like your ignition relay (under pass. side of hood on fender, five in a row)we pull one out and switch it for another one, she fires right up, unhook tow truck, smile, go to local dealer and purchase all 5 brand new and install. Yup same story, a week or so later turns over will not start, no fire at plug wires, mechanic friend in Phx. says R&R crank sensor. I did, works like a champ. go to Laughlin, get married, have fun, drive home, life is good. Yesterday go outside to fire her up (the Jeep) ,you guessed it, turns over fine, will not start, no fire at plug wires. So far have thrown plugs, Jacobs rotor, cap, and wires, relays, ignition mod and coil, and crank sensor at it and am still lost. All wire connections look good, ground to engine block is fine, fuel pressure and volume is fine, changed filter just for fun. Just in case all this isn't weird enough about the time all this started I lost the ability to keep the pre-sets on the radio, they stay for a day or so and then all revert back to 530, I know its probably unrelated but I'm desparate, I need to be in Texas on the 7th and the dealer can't even get me in up here until the 30th (Show Low), if he works on it Friday and then orders parts with the labor day weekend, well you see my situation. ANY thoughts or ideas will be most welcome. Thanks, Doc.

Rob,
Most likely it is not a vacuum leak, but rather; a loose belt on your ac
clutch assembly. Tighten the belt and see if the noise goes away. If
it has been squeeking like this for very long; you may have damaged the
belt. If it looks bad (shiny on the inside part of the belt or cracked
anywhere on the inside or outside) replace it.

I am a little late in posting/reading as I just got
back from a quick trip to Montana for my bridal

promise that Scott will return to his normal,
friendly, jeeping self after the wedding. I am going to

Subject: Re: Colorado Trip

Hey Kevin,
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE odn't waste your money on a flex-fan! Did I say please?

Then it came back to blowing out the regular vents in front of me. a few days later it started to do it again and then about a day or so after that it stuck to where it only blows out the top vent by the windshield. I checked the heater settings to see if that would change anything and it looks like it is stuck to the top vent. Kevin,
Here is my $.02 worth.

Subject: HP for 2.5L
I am looking for ways to increase the HP on my '98 TJ SE 2.5L engine. I am really interested in the Turbo City throttle body mod. Anyone running this? I am more concerned about geeting extra power for when its on pavement but do not want a mod that will hinder trail performance. I want good throttle response and low to mid rpm power. i already have 31" tires with 4.56 gears and less restrictive cat back exh. I don't know the brand of the exh. which was put on by previous owner. Everything else is stock.
TIA

I have a vacuum problem in my 98 TJ and I was wondering how I find a
leak? Do I have to use a spray bottle with soapy water and look for
the bubbles or what? My problem is when I switch to AC it screetches
sometimes for over a minute while it is waiting for the control to
kick over. The screetch is that strong wind howl you get during a
storm, but way higher pitch! Anyway... thanks... -Rob

Subject: New LCA Brackets $$ ??
4 Wheelers quoted me about $400 to replace both LCA axle brackets on
my 98TJ with heavy duty brackets w/skids. That's sounds reasonable
since RE wants $300 for their brackets and I would still have to get
them welded. I haven't worked with their fab shop before. Does the
price sound right? I had my gears done by them and the results were
good. Anybody had work done but their fab shop?

Subject: Help Me please!
This is going to be a bit long, but please bear with me. 87' XJ, 4.0,auto,Laredo pkg., 3" Skyjacker lift, Wilderness roof rack...etc.
