But if you want you could click "My Groups" then "Edit My Groups" to change from "Individual Emails" to "Daily Digest". That will cut down on the number you receive.

Subject: Overheating...is anyone knowledgable about cooling fans?

Hello all you Cooling Gurus:

I'm running a Grand with the 5.2L V8 that likes to heat up during extended idles. I'm considering one of three things:

1) Swap my stock cooling fan for a FlexFan (about $50)

...or...

2) Running an auxiliary 16" fan between my mechanical fan and the radiator (3" of space doesn't leave me much and around $75)

...or...

3) Completely remove the stock fan and clutch and run with a stock two-speed electric fan out of a '98 5.9L Grand Cherokee (about $200!!!) A sub-benefit would be that I would get a little more horsepower from the lesser load on the engine.

Does anyone have any insight into what would work best (read: most cost-effective increase in cooling) for me? It ONLY overheats on a hot day while idling or rock-crawling and usually only when the AC is on.

Thanks in advance.

The first thing I would do is check your existing fan clutch. If it's fine then a flex fan probably won't help much. Is there also a factory electric fan in it? If so I would check that.

For those that remember, the FCC used to require licenses for all CB
operators. They have since decided that it was a lousy idea and scrapped it.
I believe they will do the same with the GMRS radios, it's just a matter of

Hey Kevin,
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE odn't waste your money on a flex-fan! Did I say please? They actually will reduce the efficientcy of your cooling sustem at higher RPMs. It works on the principle of the blades flattening out at higher speeds, when the fan is not supposed to be necessary because the vehicle speed is enough to provide airflow. The problem with the theory is that when you reach higher RPMs, the fan blades flatten out, effectively giving you a flat, spinning, air damn that blocks air from your engine and pulls squat through your radiator! Imagine the negative side effects this would have on the trail where higher RPMs are frequent, with vehicle speed rather slow! Plus, it will overheat your engine in a heart beat climbing steep grades at highway speeds, especially if the Jeep is loaded down or pulling a trailer. These fans are a spiffy looking waste of money and will not solve your problem. The electric fans should solve your problem. The $75 extra electric fan in addition to the mechanical sounds like the way to go. This fan could be mounted on the outside of the radiator if you have more room there. Just position it to blow through the radiator, rather than suck(hehe, that always cracks me up).
I do have one question, though. How hot is "overheating?" Modern engines run pretty hot to begin with, with 200 to 210 an accepted "norm." Unless it's hitting 230 or higher, I wouldn't even worry about it. Especially if it cools down right away when you get moving again.

Just my .02! Your mileage may vary (missed seein that lately!)

There are a couple of other even more obvious benefits to GMRS when
comparing them against FRS service. Aside from the power levels, which for
a hand held radio is a big trade off between portability and battery size,
the GMRS radios are allowed to use an externally mounted antenna. This
means you can mount an antenna on your vehicle which will run circles,
performance wise, around the stubby little antenna that the FRS radios MUST
use. (ever notice that the FRS radios do NOT have a detachable
antenna?.....not legal per the FCC)

I was unaware of the fact that VHF marine band radios could be legally used
in a non-marine application. I had always assumed that they must be used in
conjuction with maritime traffic.
