Could this be the closet thing to a Cherokee since they quite making it? Not so sure if I'm sold on the whole 4 door Wrangler yet, but I can see some possibilities. Frame, solid axles etc..

That's kind of what I was thinking... I think I would go this route before I did the Liberty thing, just for the reasons you said... Frame etc. It will be cool to see some of the builds that hit these things. We know the Cherokee can wheel, so this thing should also be a very capable rig once it's set up.
Obviously it will never hang with Nicks Purple Nurple Zuk Mobile... but it should be close...:)

I agree!!! It seems that the liberty has taken 60%,Grand cherokee 10%,commander 20% of cherokee owners in the past 5 years..the other 10% are going to buy the unlimited;) !!!!

I was considering one of these but the towing limits are less than my XJ.

I just can't warm up to it. It looks like an attempt to compete with the H3. I do however dig the looks of the H3 for some reason.

As an XJ owner, I take offense to saying that thing looks like a cherokee..... when I first looked at it, I thought H3.......

One of my DD's is a Maroon 92 XJ and that picture sure reminds me of it. Except the 07 has a frame. :)

Thanks for posting these photos, now I know for sure that it looks like I'll be buying an 06 or 05, do not like the looks.... too SUVish, a la H3 specifically.

Point out another vehicle with 4 wheel drive, 4 doors, and solid axles currently being sold in the USA. And smaller then a Ford Super Duty.
Thats what I see about it.

Similar to what I think of XJ's, I think these would look a LOT better with a lift and some decent tires. Sort of like the Liberty's, I don't care for them much, but with a lift and tires, they take on a different and more aggresive look.
Ain't no way I'm getting rid of my XJ in favor of the Unlimited any time soon, I like my junk.

I must disagree with you naysayers on the Jeep UL. In fact what you are llooking at is the Jeep Dakar. And if anything the H3 is trying to look like it not the other way around. I had the chance twice to spend some time in and around the Dakar and clearly the new 4 door is it! I like it, in fact I love it, so does my wife.

Now I like the Dakar...Maybe the difference here is that the 07 is wider and essentially, bigger than the Dakar.

What has the world come to?? A four door two wheel drive Wrangler. Ugh. I do hope they come out with a production version of the Gladiator.

A two wheel drive Jeep wrangler type vehicle isnt anything new.

You would have to have one hellva sharp eye to see the difference:
97 Dakar - 07 UL - Difference 07 specs minus Dakar specs
Overall Length: 166.5 - 173.4 - 6.9
Overall Width: 72.0 - 73.9 - 1.9
Overall Height: 75.0 - 70.8 - (4.2)
Wheelbase: 108.5 - 116 - 7.5
Front Track: 58.0 - 61.9 - 3.9
Rear Track: 58.0 - 61.9 - 3.9

With the raked windshield it appears to me that the hood may not be able to rest on the windshield anymore. What do you think?

If you will look on the top of the hood you will see the two rubber rests and a footman loop for the tie down.

I guess I was a bit confusing in what I was getting at. Yeh, I know the windshield still folds down. I wasreferring to resting the hood on the windshield (not vice vesa)...you know, when you're wrenchin' on the Jeep.

Well I'm not sure who took who's idea here, but to me the 07 unlimited 4 door looks like an H3. Look at them side by side here. The specs are even pretty close to the same. You put a truck suspension on the Wrangler, 33's, and a solid steel top and that's an H3.

Jack, just not seeing it. The Dakar was on the tour in 97 nearly 10 years before the H2-H3 was even a bad dream left in a cheap motel bedsheet.

I agree with Don.... I think that despite that the H3 and Jeep are similar in appearance.... it was designed like the way Jeeps have been styled for years.
They even stole the 7 slot grill design!

H3???? Wheres does that come from???? I would think the Late H1 if it looks like a hummer!! The roof is fixed on the H3.... I do think the rest of cherokee owners will flock in to buy the new 2007...and the 1% would be the hardcore and they won't buy anything.
I do agree that this was born from the Dakar and the Rescue concepts...Jeep even says that!!!!

Hummer and many other rigs out there are trying to play catch up ball. What is interesting is that in Jeeps 65 years with no major change to the body or driveline, no one has been able to compete except in some niche spaces. Even then I am not sure what it would be.
You cannot buy an overall better, more capable and more upgradeable 4x4 off road rig than a Jeep...PERIOD!
Some will say the ole Toyota FJ was a good competitor to the Jeep. Yes, it was, and it was not based upon the Jeep by chance, the rights were sold to the Japs for little or nothing as part of the rebuilding of Japan after WWII.

True. The beancounters probably want to get in on the sales they are missing out on.
