What tire do you run?
Why?
I have had several types, none of which stand out for any particular reason, good or bad.
I'm just curious..........I hope there are some good stories out there.
(I must make mention of the one exception to the above, Pep boys General tires, 31x9.50 15, wore out in a hurry, less than 12k miles)

37 MTR's like em alot. Not the stickiest tire but no sidewall failures and they are lasting pretty well. Can't tell you the amount of miles cos it's a trailer queen.

This is a trick question. What size are you interested in? It makes a huge diffenence.:)

Same here 37 MTR's and I have ran them pretty hard , I do notice that the side walls are prone to damage after they are several years old . As far as my 35 MTR's they wear fairly well on the street but do not over inflate , they seem to wear alot better around 20#'s .

Size matters?
Well, I am running 37 right now, but I was thinking 33 to 37 in general. That seems to be the most common size we all use.

Thats cool, I just wanted to make sure we are not talking Jeep Liberty 27"s or a Chevy Duramax crew cab.
My personal experiece is Super Swamper TSL/SX series, are a great tire for Arizona rocks and desert. You can shoot them with a .45acp stick a plug in them and still drive to work on Monday. Yes they shake and they are rough riding but they are the best for abuse. My 2nd choice is the Goodyear MTRs. They are a great all around tire with great grip on the rocks. They also have a great ride to them.
If money is not a factor then the BFG krawler compitition compound is best tire out there.:)

I run MTR's, to me it is the best all around tire. I can get 40K plus out of them, they work very well off road, great sidewalls, not as good off road as Swampers, but Swampers only get you about 26K miles. You can get more miles out of BFG MT's, but I have seen far more failures in the sidewalls when rock crawling.

I must admit, that "fireside" chats occur after a run, those with Swampers seem to hold them in high regard for their reliability.
(note: in Arizona a firesdie chat can occur while standing in an airconditioned doorway during the summer months.)

I run 33x13.50x15 TSL SuperSwampers
Soft compound: Traction in mud, rocks, snow is awesome. Sand sucks it just digs me in.
Side walls tuff as chit
I can't really get them to chunk unlike my previous tires. So A+ on that.
Luvs low psi
Downside: hard to balance, wears really fast on the street.
here it is with less than 10000miles

37x12.50 R17 MTRs... My second set of 37 inch MTRs. My first set had 45K miles on them when I sold them with 25% tread left... These tires grip pretty well, wear really well and have pretty good road manners. A really good compromise for folks who also drive their rigs on the road somewhat often.

MTR's or Swamper SX's.
I've been wanting to try a set of the Maxxis Creepy Crawler though. They have rocketed up in price however :(
I have also ran 35" X-terrains. They were OK. They wear extremely well. BFG Muds are another tire I have used and they were OK for lighter 4wheeling. They too wear good, better than MTRs.

There was an article in a offroad rag a few months ago that I thought summed it up. The other superior tires that have previously been mentioned were rated as 5 stars (out of 5) for Rock Crawling and puncture resistance but were rated at 2 stars for street driveability and street wear. The MT/R was rated at 4 stars for rock crawling, but 5 stars for street and wear. That pretty much sums it up. You can get a better rock crawling tire, but the MT/R is almost as good, with a heck of a lot better performance under every other category. For most of us, that spend most time on road, the MT/R to me is the obvious tire of choice.... you just have to keep them rotated. MT/R's love to be rotated. I'd recommend every 3k miles. I actually rotate mine every 1k miles just for the heck of it.

I have read many articles about which tire was "best" according to the author, but I just thought I would see what us guys who actually drive 'em every day think...............
I just bought a set of 31x1350 15's for my sons basically stock YJ, only had'em for a couple of weeks, all on road, so no real opinion, yet.
A YJ has more of an agressive suspension, so the vibes (especially first thing in the am) from the TSL/SX is more notable.
(Did I slide by without poking the YJ crowd with that verbal stick?)
It looks like I might get to try out a set of 36" swampers on my TJ when it gets out of the Jeep hospital.............:D
I'll let'cha know...................

NEVER EVER believe the mag rags. They only talk up what they get for free. Or if a company advertieses with them. THEY LIE!!!

I've ran BFG's MT, Swamper SSR's and GY MTR's I like the 35 x 12.5 MTR's I am now running. I trailer my jeep most of the time and dont worry at all about the sidewalls in the rocks. I also had a set of 35 x 14.5 SSR's one year in Moab when it was raining. With the sipes and side lugs, I just stuck the tires agains the left side of the wall on the Cliff Hanger ledge and up I went with no problems. I have ran 3 sets of BFG's and can say that I wont be going back to them. When I get my front axle built, I want to try either 37 MTR's or 36" IROKs. :)

Yep, I rarely believe anything in them. I was trying to make the point that I was actually agreeing with their assessment in that the on road performance and wear really is a 5...and they're pretty darn good offroad. I thought it was a good comparison at least in the few tires that I have experience with from the review.

I run 35" Baja Claws. I like'em, they flex well, have a good sidewall (I have cut'em, but who hasn't :D), wear well on the street. The directional aspect of them can be a benefit and a deterrant depending on the terrain you are in. But they stick to the rocks well and if you aren't DD your rig then the bias claws are well worth the money.

Of course it depends on what kind of wheeling you do, etc. and I'm not in the same league as you regarding tire size but I've run BFG MT's, 31's and 33's (even back when 33's were considered big) and usually get 40-45k miles out of them. Great traction on dry road, not so great on wet road, excellent in the mud and snow and I found them to work very well in AZ but the hardcore rock crawling guys say the sidewall cuts easily on sharp rocks. But they balance well and for a daily driver, they last forever.

I have run 35" MTR's, 36" SX's, and 37" irocs... I killed quite a few mtr sidewalls but they were nice for the road. between the sx and the iroc i think the irocs have better grip but faster wear. both had better grip then the mtr's but both of them will beat you up on the street

My ultimate tire for choice is the Swamper LTB.....I run a 34/10.50/15 and I absolutly love them...I have put them through everything AZ has to offer and still not a plug or a problem with the tires.....The sidewalls take a tremendous amout of abuse and show little signs of wear......My 33/12.50/15 had a hard time with balancing issues and wore unevenly!! As far as on the road...they dont do as well stopping very quickly but then again I try to drive the speed limit and watch for all those people waving back here in the EAST VALLEY!!

I've run 33x13.5 Swamper LTB's, 34x12.5 Swamper Trxus MT's, and currently have a set of MTR's. I'd say that the Trxus were the best all-around with the MTR's a close second. If I didn't have to drive so many highway miles I'd definitely get another set of LTB's because those things were absolutely awesome offroad.

I like the MTR's, but must have bad luck. 14K miles and they are shot (big chunks missing, etc.)
Considering swampers since most of my miles are dirt anyways.

2X on the LTB's I loved them too, they are hard to keep balanced, unless you use "airsoft pellets". I'm running 35x12.50 TrXus M/T now and they are a OK on & off-road but the LTB's rule in the rocks, wish they made them in 35 & 37 sizes.

I run the Q78x15 TSL Bias ply swamper...I bought them used from a friend of mine in Alaska. Probably had 10,000 miles on them at that time... I've put another 30 on them since...still over 5/8" inch of tread on most of them...and you can ask anyone that's seen my tires in person, there are literally gashes in my sidewalls, and yet I continue to air down for every trail run and run them at 8 - 10 PSI...no problems in two years and counting.
They are a little rough on the street, but once they warm up and get some heat in them, they smooth out pretty well..
Not to mention that gnarly sound a swamper makes going down the highway at 70 MPH...lol:D

What other tires have you owned in the 35 or 37 inch catagory? I am looking at BFG's, but I can not find anything but fair reviews on this board. Did you buy them at a discount shop or get them through the dealership you work for?

Do you even air those puppy's down? I run Supper Swamper Tsl SX's and love them. Off road they rule. On road they suck when it's cold out. Since it's hot as hell out right now they run pretty good on the street. If I was to buy a different tire it would be the MTR.

I currently have the TRXUS MTs but going back to the MTRs. The TRXUS are a good tire... tough sidewalls. Some chunking but not bad. They are pretty quiet for an MT but are very difficult to balance.
I have the 16" variety and the sidewalls are very stiff. when I ran them at 10-12 psi I had alot of trouble making it over wet waterfall/steps that the others in our group with MTR easily make it over. Ive since been running at lower 7 psi and it has helped alot. But I'm going back to a 15" rim and MTRs next.
