View Full Version : Radiator & Fan Damage...

Here's the problem...
I have a bad habit of driving a little too fast down the rocky washes and I've been know to shake stuff loose.
Yesterday I discovered that my new electric fan, despite being attached pretty tightly, had moved enough on the radiator to cut through part of the cooling core... Okay, I wanted a three core anyway, good time to add it on.
But... I want to avoid the same thing happening again (no I won't be slowing down anytime soon). My first thought was to fab set of hangers that would drape both sides of the radiator and limit the downward movement of the fan... as this is what ultimately did me in. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who has suffered this problem... any other suggestions on how to restrict the fan movement under hard driving conditions? Thanks...

Were you using the through-core zip tie mounts? If yes, don't use them. They destroy radiators. If no, make a stronger bracket. :D

x2 on the through core mounts.... Stay away from them.
Fab something that uses the original Fan Shroud holes on the rad.

Thanks for the input guys... yeah I was using the zip ties... lesson learned. I'll Try to make a braket; I might even look for a better electric fan that has a shroud and is made specifically for the YJunk...

Thought about that, but the original fan shroud broke free during one of my romps and got things a little hinky in the engine bay before it finally broke free (and before I could get stopped...) I also ended up with broken radiator mounts and the radiator actually sitting on the steering linkage on that run... Not to mention that combination wasn't really cooling all that well on the rock crawling side of the road...
I'll find something that works...
