View Full Version : Simon/Mike/Cole/anyone/Bueller, question about my shaft

I'm coming up on 3k miles on my Precision Driveshaft I got from you. I was told by Mike that it's important to stay on top of lubing these. I have a few questions on this:

1) What type of lube do I use? I have just the general lube in my gun now but up until this point I've only used it on suspension components. I assume a driveshaft that spins at a bazillion mph prolly needs some special schtuff.

2) Where's the best place to get that needle zerk attachment? Do the auto stores typically carry this?

3) So I don't have to do the job twice, how many zerks should I look for? I think it was 5 or 6?

4) I've always greased zerks up to the point where grease starts seeping out of the joint I'm greasing. Is this the correct way to grease a driveshaft? Due to the stress/heat/speed of the driveshaft I want to make sure all these years I've been doing this right. Obviously a joint in the suspension will just make some noise when it goes dry, fill 'er, and it's as good as new. If the driveshaft isn't lubed properly I'm sure full and spectacular failure is within miles away.

Thanks

Mike

It would be best if you call Mike in our Service Dept. You can pick up the needle at Checker/Napa/Autozone. :)

I suppose I could always take my shaft out and have Mike service it while I'm down there?

Mike,
Check this thread out..especially the 2nd page. It should help you a lot.

You'll notice some additional links to Stus' site...good stuff about grease and CV shaft work etc.
Lubing a CV shaft is easy and straighforward. Even I can do it. :)

I will say Stu knows how to ...."Perform Preventative Maintenance and Corrective repairs on a Double Cardan Drive Shaft, utilizing best known industry methods and components including the proper lubrication compounds". :D

Reading this reminds me I need to hit all the zerk fittings. I guess I'll go lay under the Jeep for awhile.

Yeah...all over town jeepers are gonna be laying up under their jeeps and greasing their shafts.
There's a visual no one needs, huh?

:) There are five total zerk fittings on your driveshaft. The most critical one is in the center of the CV joint. It is the one that requires the needle fitting. In order to get at it properly, you should remove the shaft. As far as grease goes, just use some good high temp wheel bearing grease. If you want, just pull it out and bring it down to the shop. I will gladly have one of the guys grease it for you and check it out. :)

Well laying under my Jeep I found my vibration problem. One of the u-joints on my rear driveline is broken. Hope precision driveline can help me out tomorrow.

Just got back from Precision Driveline. Re-installed my driveshaft. The guys at Precision said I need to grease the center ball about every 500 miles or once a month with the lift kit and angles.

BY Golly, that makes sense! I'm gonna grease my shaft and centering ball in the morning! :)

Is that center one the one that requires you to remove the driveshaft? If so, every 500 miles is pretty darn inconvenient. For most people that use their Jeep to commute to work that could be ever 1-2 weeks.

Well with the lifts most of us run our driveshaft angles probably vary anywhere from 15 to 25 degrees. With those extreme angles and as expensive as it can be to replace Dshafts and Tcases that's all the motivation I need to keep mine well lubed.

I also went with a SS SYE to reduce that angle even more and relieve stress on those parts.

But I have to say that I HATE greasing that needle fitting. I almost break one every time. :( Hopefully I will get more patient the older I get. :D
