I have a 89 xj with to many miles to count that is running HOT.
I have done water pumps, t stats, radiators, fan clutches the works.
It does not seem to matter what I do It still runs hot.
Does anyone have any ideas?

My 99 XJ also runs at 210, which is the design spec. I often wondered if it was running to hot when you burn your hands opening up the hood.... but everyone I have talked to says that is about right. I have heard, if the temp gage is at 210, and it is not boiling over or steaming or blowing hoses or using coolant, etc. then it should be ok. I don't think you should burn your hands on the hood though.

DUDE you've got to vent the hood in some way, it's a bad design by the Jeep folks, way to tight under the hood. I'll bet you can easly find a thousand links on the subject at NAXJA board. I use to have the same problems until I vented the hood ............... good luck.

I get customers daily coming in on this, in the summer. It is normal if it is not boiling, or any signs of being hot. If it runs at 210 it is not hot. Also sometimes, gauge or sender goes bad and reads high.

Are you hearing preignition knock? This causes excess heat, can be caused by low octane fuel, improper air fuel mixture, incorrect timing.
Can be a automatic transmission issue believe it or not. Slipping transmission or low fluid causes excess heat and unless have separate cooler will heat up your radiator. Didn't catch what transmission you have.
No cracks in or missing fan shroud?
210 as other have said is normal. Is it hot while freeway driving or only at stop sign or slow moving off road?
Hope some of what I or someone else offered helps.
Let me know what works, I have a so far stock XJ myself.

Recently mine ('90) had been running between 210 and the last line before RED.....never boiled over, just ran hot.....it had always been like that so even though I didn't particularly like like it, I lived with it......yesterday I installed a new heavy duty fan clutch (real heavy duty) and now I'm running BELOW 210......the part number for the fan clutch is on the arizonaxj.com site under the tech section for making your a/c run cooler (which I will will be doing this week).....thanx to Joe D for the write up on the xj site......

Yes it boils in the over flow tank.
It has a good fan,fan shroud, radiator, water pump, Tstat.
Heater is disconected .
Good cooland h2o mix.
What about after market raidiator and fans???

I had a Dodge Viper that always ran hot (common problem), and the answer on all the forums was to purge the system of all coolant and put in Evans waterless coolant. It was expensive, but solved my problem, dropping the operating temp 10-20 degrees depending on the time of year. It also eliminates corrosion and never goes bad. Not sure, but it might drop our jeep temps also...just a thought!

YES
AND,
If your running the "Closed Cooling System", GET RID OF IT!
Get yourself a Modine 93 and up rad., 1998 and up XJ electric acc. fan, and make sure you run a 195 degree T-stat with a GOOD FAN CLUCH....

When i worked for jeep I ran in to this alot. That year jeep cooling system is a closed system. That where you fill up the coolant throw the over flow bottal.
Theres no radiator cap on the radiator if I right. If so its a pressure system and if the cap or bottal is bad the system will not flow right and you will get a air in the system that will not let the coolant flow. Its a pain to get all the air out but you need to look at the coolant bottle and cap to see if the ok.
If you have to get on buy it from Jeep they have the only one that works right. To get bleed the system to fix the problom. Here is a link to back up what im saying.http://www.olypen.com/craigh/cooling.htm.
Hop this help you out.

You have air trapped in the system

No air in the system.
And I have allready changed it over from a closed pressure system to a normail cap and over flow bottle system.

ok,
1)What rad. do you have?
2)What degree T-stat are you running?
3)How old is your fan cluch?
4)how old it your rad. cap? Does the rubber show any wear?
5)What electric fan are you running? the 98+ fans move ALOT MORE AIR.

I was thinking the air trapped and rad cap possibilities as well.
But this seems to be an unresolved XJ issue.
A question, though... how are you sure that there's no air trapped?
And have you done a good collant cleaning/flush in the past few years?
Once again, I am pimping the Water Wetter!

Water Wetter will lower you operating temp but watch for corrosion. I know the bottle says it will not corrode, but it does when used without any anti-freeze/coolant.
