Can anyone recommend a good place in the Valley to buy diamond plate or standard aluminum plate. I don't need anything that thick...

Capital Metals south of Broadway on 48th Street. They have select sizes in their showroom to choose or I am sure they could cut anything you would want.

I'll be sure to check out Capital Metals. I'll probably give them a call tomorrow.

Question about the Davis Salvage place. Do they sell salvage or remnant steel? I'm looking to pick up more stuff to practice welding. I'm going to BGB Steel tomorrow morning...

Are you saying that Davis Salvage has a good selection of used steel?

Well I never made it over to BGB this morning. Stupid 7-4 M-F hours :(

As stated by many in this thread, Capitol Metals is the place to go.
If you go to Davis Salvage, make sure to leave a trail of bread crumbs behind you so you can find your way out of the labyrinth. Also, most everything at Davis will be rusty as it is stored outside.

They do have new stuff too. I remember going there in the 70's to buy wire and aluminum to build antennas for Ham radio. Back then they even had B25 Nose turrents with good plexiglass still in it! Neat place and you never know what you'll find.;)

I agree, it can be a neat place to explore. Just don't forget your bread crumbs or in todays world I guess that would be a GPS unit.

Okay, don't get your panties in a bunch. :) I'll definitely check out Capitol Metals. I like the idea of Davis because it has miscellaneous scrap stuff.
I grew up in Chicago, I know the difference between surface rust and 'we dump rock salt on the road in the winter, your car will last 5 years' rust.

I've really got two priorities. One is to find diamond plate aluminum for my popup, the other is to find some scrap steel to lay some beads...

I'm interested in BGB because it's right down the street from my work.
I went to All State Steel up by Cave Creek and Bell last saturday. For the record, they only had scrap tube for the most part. I went there because they were open on the weekends, and not ridicously far from my house.

I'll post some followups after I hit all of these places. Thanks!

(2) Capitol also has a lot of scrap and cut offs. :)
(3) Nobody cares where you grew up. ;)
(4) The rust notice was not to warn of weakened steel but to note the extra cleaning time (wire wheel on an angle grinder) you may be faced with. :(

Classic! :D

Edit:
I went to BGB today. They have a pretty decent selection of remnant material, including tube and plate. Long and short. They charged me by the foot for some 3/8" plate that was about 5" wide and 5' long. It was $1 per foot, so I spent 5 bucks.

They also have a good amount of steel diamond plate. The new aluminum diamond plate was about $90 for a 4'x8' 16ga sheet.
