O.K. I joined the site because I liked the trails section on your lod site. I do not own a Jeep. I have a 85 bronco. I have put a 6" lift, 35" tires, built bumpers front and rear. I have put alot of myself in to it. I recently had it up for sale and was gonna get a little sammy and hopefully have some money left over to do some major mods. Well i wasnt able to sell and have resigned myself to keep it.

Today I get a call from my brother in law who owns a 78 CJ7. He says he wants to trade. It has a bit of rust on the floor boards and no major mods to it.

I dont know what to do. The bronco needs a new solid front axle. The jeep needs the mods to make it capable. Is it worth it? My Bronco is in my sig. Please feel free to comment or even to tell me to kick rocks! Thanks, Baked:D

If you have to do major stuff to get the jeep going then keep the bronco but if your looking for a different project then go for it.
I got rid of my jeep for a 4runner but my family was quickly out growing the jeep and I wanted to build on something else I want to take the drive train and put it in a 4 seater buggy. :D
I should be starting that soon after the shop is up.

If you like the Bronco, I'd say keep it. It all depends on what you want to do with it. There's nothing special about Jeeps except they are easy to work on. There are tons of very capable off-road flavors of rigs out there. My solid live front axle 1984 Toyota pickup kicked butt -- wish I still had it.

So, if you want to get all twisted up in Az canyons and more hard core trails, the Jeep may be your ticket sin ce they are small enough to fit more places. If you have fun doing what you do now, heck, keep the Bronco. :D

That is my problem. To continue building the bronco I will need to go with a solid front axle. Which meens lots a money and fabing. Not to mention if I wanted to run a smaller trail, I would trash the body on the bronco. I am going to drive it tonight and then make a decision. Thanks for all your comments, Baked

If you don't need it as a driver you can always buy a chassis or a trashed one and start from scratch. :D

Id keep the bronco! If later you feel you still want a jeep, you can find a beater like barry said :D

either way youre gonna spend the money for the axle or for the new jeep + lift parts etc. so its just a matter of what you want more

No A/C....I traded last night. The jeep is a 76 cj w/ a 304 mated to an automatic. It has a hard top, soft top, bikini top, hard doors, and soft doors. The PO but the fold down kit on the front window and the quik remove door hinges. It is not with out its down falls but niether was the bronco. Thanks for your advice, Baked:cool:

Good jumping off point there. Just remember...
Just Empty Every Pocket

For the floor panels, they are mostly flat where it counts, get some 1/8" steel and make 'em bullet proof with some weld beads or sealant and self-tapping screws.
You can get the floppiness out of the soft top's rear by adjusting the angled pieces that go up to the rear corner. There's holes where the keeper pin will go in (4 or 5 of them are in the tube).
The front bumper looks nice. I wonder how thick and where the tie-ins are for the rocker panel diamond plate. As well as what's under those rear corners and if they're sealed with sealant to keep crap from getting under them.
It is a narrow-track rig. Instead of spending a bunch in those axles, find a set from under an 8-lug Wagoneer. That'll net you a front 44 and rear 60, both of those can easily and relatively inexspensively be built to where they'll outlast your rig. For those that say "yeah right... a Detroit Locker for an AMC 20 is more expensive than one for a 60. And the 44 locker is right about the same price as that for a D30.
